Max budget of $900. Don’t have to spend it all if not necessary. Looking for something with at least VX3/meopro quality glass. Something with illumination and either a multi range reticle or solid accuracy in twisting turret. Will be used for range work to 600 yrds and hunting to 500 yards. Two that have caught my eye are Dougs sale price of meopro 3.5-10 x 44 w illuminated dot. Also considering SWFA SS of some type (not sure if they have illumination). Open to other suggestions. Thanks for any experienced feedback.

If you want illumination in an SWFA, you have three to choose from- 1-4, 1-6, 5-20. You might want to check out a Nightforce SHV 3-10; they have two reticles with illumination.

I’d consider a Nightforce SHV also . It should be in your budget if you catch a sale.

Is the SHV going to be glass comparable to a VX3 Leopold?

Yes, and much more importantly it’s 10x more reliable.

You can get a demo Zeiss V4 4-16x44 with zero-stop, locking target elevation turret and illuminated reticle (several choices) and stay under your budget of $900.

My Tract TORIC has tracked perfectly and the glass is outstanding (compares to my Swarovski Z5 and LRHS). Don’t confuse the TORIC with the entry level models that had issues (at least when first introduced). I’d also stay in touch with Doug at camerland about Demos or special unadvertised pricing.

The SHVs i have played with had really short eye relief. So far, my UHD LHT 3-15×50 has been great. Far better glass than VX3, tracking appears to be good as well

Wesley, do you have experience with this scope? What would make you choose it over a zeiss, meopta or nightforce SHV?

I should have added that I really want 3.5-4” eye relief. Nothing is more aggravating the getting scope bit in a short eye relief scope. That rules out the SHV for me.

Shot 2 rifles today at the lovely KISA shooting range, My 308 wears the UHD. 3-15×50 and my suppressed. 223 model 600 a Vari-X III, 2.5-8. Had no problems spotting his at 300 with 308. Shot the 223 at 200. Both worked well. 1/2" groups with both rifles tells me the scopes are 'good enough'. I'm really liking the Razor

I’ve read this several times, but I don’t notice it in the SHVs I’ve used.

The SHV has 3.1" of eye relief according to Night Force. It hasn't been a problem for me on my .223, but might on a heavy kicker.

1/2" at 200 yds? Even 100 is great. What bullets in the 223? Good shooting Dennis.

I have NF 3-10x42 SHV mounted on a 7mm-08 and a 280 don't have a problem with eye relief.

I've never had any issues at all with the SHV either. Mine are the 5-20x56 though. No problems with my NXS rifle scopes either. When I want a scope that tracks and is tough as nails, I reach for the nightforce rifle scopes.. The next one I'm going to add to the collection will be the SHV 3-10x42 or NXS 2.5-10x42.

Which SHV?
It’s a non issue on the 3-10. They list 3.5” but that may be conservative. It feels like more.

SHV 3-10-42 here and the 3.5 inches of eye relief are not an issue with either the 6.5 or 308 win. That Vortex Razor at that price has my interest piqued.

You are correct. I have the 4-14 and should have checked the 3-10 also.

Shv is a great scope. Id try the razor and then sell it if you don't like it and get the shv.

Don’t forget about the Bushnell Elite tactical scopes. Doug had good deals on them recently and you’d have enough left over for any mounts you wish.

Same with a Creed. Not a problem.

I don't notice ER being short, read somewhere that NF was real conservative with those numbers.

Solid scope. IMO, glass is as good as VX-3i, maybe not quite Swaro or Zeiss but very good. Good enough.

Surprised there has not been a mention of any Trijicons AccuPower Line. I reall like their MOA green Dot. To my eye's this is about ideal. Big fan of Swaro's 1" tubes with BRX also. just use the BRX no twisting neccesary.

Trijicon makes some tough scopes. To me, AccuPower glass is about in the VX-3i class.

Now those aren't made by the Chicoms....

But, they aren't real cheap, either....

Discontinued for some strange reason...when these are gone there are no more.

I read on another forum that scope was a special run made exclusively for EuroOptics. Kinda' like OpticsPlanet's "OpMod" runs.

Hope it's not like the Cabelas series by Meopta, warranty a pass thru to Cabelas, not handled directly by the maker. That may be part of the better Cabelas pricing on those scopes

So, that may be something worth checking out with a special run item before the fact.

Not an issue, Vortex is the only name on the scope.

A better comparison would be the Meopta Meopro 3.5-10x44 that Meopta made specially for CameraLand, same warranty as all other Meopta scopes.

Accupowers are great. I have a few of the 3-9x40 with a 1" tube. They are best in class for their price point. All their hunting scopes are made in Japan.

Thanks Bobby, I have things pretty narrowed down between the zeiss v4 and the vortex razor. Leaning toward the Razor for a couple hundred dollars less.

I didn't read past "Max budget of $900." If I was in your situation I would go for a fantastic used scope. I snagged a 5.5-22X56 Nightforce for $750 on the 'net. I saved a bunch and the seller was able to pick up a couple bucks to help his family.

I have 2 3-10 SHV. One is on a lightweight .338, the other is on a light .300win; both are very stout recoilers. Eye relief has never been an issue. Further, the eye box is very forgiving. The SHV's replaced a Leupold 3.5-10 CDS and a Leupold 4.5-14, which both have good eye relief and eye box, and the SHV is equal to those models. "Scope Brow" has never been a concern, and I have shot them from many different positions.

In my experience, if you would like a SFP, MOA scope in the 3-10X range, you'll be hard pressed to find a tougher scope for the money than the SHV. I've dialed mine a lot and they have been flawless with heavy recoil and hard use. Less impactful, the glass is very, very good as well. I'd like a FFP 3-10 with Mil-R reticle/Mil adjustments, but is what it is - maybe someday.

In a FFP set up, I've had nothing but great experience with the SWFA 3-9 HD. Like they're known for, tracking has been fantastic. Unlike a lot of FFP's, the reticle is usable throughout the X range without illumination, and its one of the best hunting reticles I've peered through. Weight is as low as you'll find in a reliable 30mm scope. Glass is on par with scopes costing much more. Overall, I've found it to be an exceptional value and exceedingly versatile for just about any practical big game hunting range.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. For its price point, I couldn’t pass up the vortex razor HD LHT, so that’s what I went with. Here’s to hoping I will like it.
