Talking with a buddy today about a scope (new) he wants to put on his AR for his girl to shoot a deer and he wants something under $200 with decent magnification. I recommended the Burris FF II or E1 version in 3-9 or the Leupold Freedom 3-9. What else is there that he could get new for under $200 that is as good or better?

Ive always been satisfied with Burris at that price and the VX-1 Leupold I have on the boys' 243 works well for a set and forget. I believe the Freedom has VX-2 level glass.
At that price point I think it's pretty hard to beat the Burris FF II.
yeah, or a used bushnell elite, I like bushnell elites better but nothing wrong with a burris ff2
I put one on my model 7 H&S and proceeded to kill a Buck at a little over 400 yards.....Great scope and performs very good in low light........
I see a lot of recommendations for the Burris, why not the Leupold Freedom?

Bushnell Elite 4200 (to date) is the only scope I've ever had go belly up while shooting. Completely fogged on me one day at the range. I like them just fine still but I'd take the Burris over the Bushnell for this purpose (and have do exactly that) on a couple occasions.

Bang for buck, the Burris (IMO) is simply a better buy.
I agree the Burris fullfield II has never let me down. Tank of a scope for the price.
I have several Redfield Revolution scopes that have served me well.
Agreed.
Burris FFII or Redfield Revolution have both been really solid. VX-Freedom looks to have good glass, never used one though.

This.

They're not currently being made, but they can be found. Ditto the Leupold's with the LR Duplex. Nice thing about Leupold/Redfield is the warranty.

But the FF2 with Ballistic Plex is a lot of scope for the money.

The Leupold freedom may be a good “set it and forget it” scope but the “set it” part is very frustrating.

I’ve zeroed two of them in and if you aren’t familiar with the Leupold shuffle, just go buy one and try it for yourself.

With the current price of ammo, it may cost more to zero it on a 243 than what the scope cost. 😂
Burris fullfield II Ballistic Plex 2-7x35 mounted on all 4 of my AR's. No problems at all. I don't like the E1 at all.

Yep, make mine a 3-9x40 with ballistic plex reticle. I've been using them since '98. A lot of bang for the buck for sure.. Someone mentioned using the 2-7 on their AR's: Total garbage: Very unforgiving eye relief. I tried to like them, but they are garbage...
Have him skip a couple trips to the burger flippers and see if he can find a good deal on the Leupold VX Freedom 1.5-4x20 with Pig-Plex. It's a great value at $250 and even better if you can find one close to $200-115. It'd be a great superlight AR scope.
