What would be the best glass in $400 range. Asking for my father. He is looking for variable power preferably starting at 3-4x. It's for a Tikka in .308 cal. At the moment it has a cheaper model Leupold mounted. Says he wants something clearer that will gather more light. What's the best recommendations in that general price range?
Meopro 3-9x40 is a great scope and under $400
Like the Leupold VX-3i 2.5-8x36mm.

They are ~ $400... but can be had for as little as $300.

Would also say meopro

Cheaper Leupold? Which model & power? Knowing what he's using might be the starting point for an upgrade.

Yup.
Not sure of exact model. I know it's a Leupold, and I believe he gave 200-250 for it. He was talking about a vortex viper, but that model starts out at 6 power. He was trying to stay away from 30mms tubes. Everything he's ever had is 1". The man has killed several wall hangers with the optics he owns. He needs to concentrate on finding a new place to hunt now that his old options are gone. Without that the rifles & scopes are useless.
From that I’d guess the old one is a VXII. Depending how old it is, some of the newer coatings in that price range may be better. The vortex Diamondback 3.5-10x50 is very good for~250.

Otherwise, I have a VX3i 3.5-10x40 which is very bright. Much better glass than the Diamondback or VXII. Dad has a VXII on his .22-250 and I’m not impressed. My Burris FF II was clearer to my eye. I replaced the Burris with the VX3i.

If you can find a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40, it should do as required. Thick posts on plex reticle get close to center, so easy with low light and very clear aiming point. I have one on my 7RM and have a hard time justifying a different scope (I have a 3-9x42 SS MQ as backup)
Where is the best $ on a Meopro? Not finding many retailers.

Thank you neighbors for the advice.

I agree the Meopro is a good choice but I have not seen one for $400, the cheapest i have seen these lately is $449-$499....That being said for $400 or less I would go with the Leupold VX3i 2.5-8x36.....Good luck.....Hb

Excellent deal!...congrats!....Hb
Another fan of the Meopro's. I really like the 6x42 with #4 recticle, the 3-9x and 4.5-14 x 44 are nice too. Camerland has some good deals on them. To me they are a step above the Leupolds but I only have one VX3i the others are older. A 42-44mm objective and thicker cross hairs will help some in low light.
Proxibid currently has a lot with 2 Zeiss Conquest 3-9's and one Weaver V9 Classic, all near-new.

Current bid is $550 with a day and a half to go.
If you can't find a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 or a MeoPro 3-9x40, you might consider the German Precision Optics Passion 3-9x40. The non-illuminated entry model is targeted at that market and Cameraland has them for $399.95. I gave one to my nephew for his daughters to use. They are happy with it.

Good luck,

GrimJim
