came up with a remington 700 xcr 2 this weekend in 257 weatherby mag, what would you use on this rifle if it were yours (open to opinions) i have a leupold vxr 4-12x40 cds (if i can get it back from my brother) 4.5-14x50 vx3 standard duplex (one in" tube non adjustable objective) or a vx3 4.5-14x50 long range (with ao and 30 mm tube) those are my options for now gun will primarily be a deer/yote rifle and shots will run into the 500 yard range looking forward to getting it set up and dialed in
This is my go to cartridge for hunting deer and antelope in Wyoming. I use a Schmidt and Bender 3-12x50 with #9 reticle. It's been great, but probably over scoped for big game. shocked
4-12x40mm
Any one of the ones you have should be good to go. Me, I'd go with the 4.5-14x50.

When I had my .257 WBY, this is the scope that resided on it.
Are those the only choices?
I would go with this, 4.5-14x 40 or 50, with the CDS turret. I have made good use of the adjustable turret and would not have a hunting rifle without one, I do not like the 50 mm because I am one of those who gets way down on the rifle when I shoot, so I mount the scope as low as I can get it without contact with the barrel.
What elkmen1 said. My .257W is a Vanguard with a 4.5-14 X 40mm.
I just picked up a demo Tract Toric 2-10x42 to try on mine. Hoping it’s going to be a great fit.
2 of my 257 Weatherby mags. have Nightforce scopes ,1 has a Zeiss , 2 have leupolds ,i like Nightforce the best
Mine has a VX6 3-18X44. One I am putting together right now will have a VX5HD 3-15X44
I had a 4.5-14x40 A/O Leupold on mine until ~2yrs ago when I mounted a 3-10x42 Nightforce SHV. Either will get you well past 500yds.
I have a 4.5x14x50 mm Leupold on mine.
Z5 3.5-18x44mm on a Desert Accumark been flawless for me.
I have a Nikon Monarch 5-20 with side focus on mine. I planned to use it for Antelope and Mule Deer on the plains here in Wyoming, but it sits in the safe for the most part.
To get any respect here, it must have a 60mm objective bell and cost $2000 or more. Oh, and the ocular lens assembly needs to be the size of a 12 oz beer can.

This is what I did also.
To many issues with Leupold.
mrmarklin has made an excellent recommendation 👍.
Only tweek I would make would be.

I've got a meopta optika6 3-18x50 on mine, #4 reticle, capped turrets, I don't dial. Lots of good options out there.
I’d seriously prefer a Burris FFII 4.5-14x42 over any of those you mention, as an economical alternative. Relatively new variable Leupolds have let me down too many times; I exclude the VX5 and VX6, as I hear from people I know who use them that they are better. But for that money, I’d move to the next paragraph.

My real preference would be something like a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x50:

Leupold 3.5-10x40, with B&C reticle.
Lines up great for my handloaded, 110 gr Accubonds.

Such a great scope. Wish I could find someone willing to sell me one as they are no longer made. I’d even consider the Leupold FX-3 6x42 with the LRD duplex (dots) as well as that is a great scope, but finding one of those for sale is also like finding Bigfoot.
Anything you want. I put 4x16 on everything, all elite bushnells
