I got my wife a Roger No 1 in 243. What would be a good scope option? Most of the shooting will be under 150 yards
Posted By: 3dtestify Re: Ruger No 1 Scope Option - 09/23/22
Leupold VX-2 1-4x variable with 3.7 to 4.2 eye relief. May need a rear offset ring to get the scope far enough back for proper eye relief. Scoping a No.1 can be challenging!
Posted By: JGray Re: Ruger No 1 Scope Option - 09/23/22
Yep - 1.5-5x is a good one also. I use 1-4x20's with a rear offset ring on all my No. 1's...

My wife has a Leupold 2.5 x 10 on hers, seems to be fine.
Used mostly for woodchucks and deer, now and then
a coyote. Had it 25 - 30 yrs, probably 300 shots on it.

my Ruger #1 257 Weatherby mag. Brux custom barrel , i put a custom made picatinny base ,Nightforce rings and a 4.5 - 14 x 56 illuminated Nightforce scope this is my deer hunting rifle in Minnesota and out west ,when i am out west i always have a bi-pod on this rifle too. rebarreled and have hunted this rifle for 20 some years now has always been a great deer rifle rather the buck is 30 feet out to 500 yards and sometimes farther.

If its a B model EGW makes a pic rail that extends a bit over receiver.

The rail aint pretty though.

I have a Leupold 6x42 on a No. 1-A, almost perfect combination with a 7x57 out to 100-200+ yards.
With the range you stated a quality (2-7, 2.5x8, or 3-9) with good eye relief should do. If you can find one, the Conquest 2.5-8x32's fit Ruger No.1's very well. The longer tube helps a bunch in getting eye position right. As mentioned the offset ring on the rear base helps too.

i for one like plenty scope power on my no.1 because of my age , but for my daughter`s rifle on her 257 Roberts i put a Leupold 3-10 x40 1 inch tube ,most Leupold scopes have good eye relief . deer hunting on my land by the border in Minnesota distances do vary depending on what stand we are in .

Yeah, why is it the most efficient gadgets of that nature are also the least pleasing aesthetically?

For its stated use, a low x variable straight tube scope or something like an M8 4x or 6x, or generic 2-7x would be fine and dandy IMO. That approach might suffer a bit if it gets pressed into service as a longer-range tool, or not. I think a lot of guys overthink this stuff and prep for the 1% applications when prepping for the 99% applications is more important. Nothing more ludicrous, IMO, than a huge state of the art optic perched on top of a classic trim rifle.

that can depend on your ability ,loading ability and where you hunt ,i hunt out west and in my home state for larger buck deer so i need power to see what size horns and need a rifle like my Ruger #1 custom to shoot max loads because i may only need one shot, Ruger #1`s are one of the strongest actions made that`s why i have used this action for now over 20 some years. if you wanna dress in style and have a rifle that looks good with a small scope go for it. i may have some very nice new Ruger #1`s that are some of the nicer #1`s ever made by Ruger but those are safe queens still in their boxes. but i have a few Ruger #1`s that are my kill`n machines that can shoot a long ways out too with Nightforce scopes mounted on them and a bi-pod . i don`t need a classic look on my hunting Ruger #1 rifle i need my tags filled with a nice set of horns on the animal . being a redneck country boy aesthetics pleasing don`t mean much to us like it does for city folk when we go hunting.

I’m a big 2-10 fan. Meopta at camera land or tract.
It will cover your needs from up close to long range. And they are not big and heavy
I have a 2-7 on my 76239 and it’s great for that round. 243 you can definitely stretch out further

Go old go slim and light.

Not for this gal but the 6.5-20x40 or 50 gloss is the ultimate No. 1 scope for longer ranges.

The top 2.

My #1B .243 wore the old full size Vari XII 3-9X AO.
No problems.

But that was yrs ago.
My neck and shoulders aint the same.
Rifle long since gone.

My current #1B .22-250 wears a Vari XIII 3.5-10X AO (40mm) and I use a rear extension ring.
My #1 RSI .243 wore an old M8 4X and there too, a rear ext ring....just needed a little bit due to wearing heavier clothing (deer rig).

Will proly yank the M8 10X AO off my #3 and move to the #1.
Too bad Burris doesn't make posiline rings for Rugers (and an ext version).
My#3 wears gloss posiline standards, so my M8 still looks good.

I absolutely detest Ruger rings. Parting line isn't on center, and varies, so you have to dress them to reduce chance of scope finish damage.
And since the parting line differs, as does contouring, ring tops may end up being ring specific (and orientation on ring).

Most folks don't pay attention.

Have seen one Burris Zee ring and one set of Reg Ruger rings that were screwed up, customers didn't notice and scope damage the result.

I have an EGW base for a B. But haven't started a build yet that will wear it.

Not sure if a 10x scope is needed for a 150 yard maximum range. I'd be looking for something a bit lighter and trimmer. I have a 6x36 Leupold on my 1A 7x57 and I find it ideal. It may be half a smidgen short but in the field I never notice it. Just raise the rifle up, acquire the animal and fire. The 2.5-8x36 would be better in my opinion than the larger 3.5-10x40.
Posted By: cotis Re: Ruger No 1 Scope Option - 09/26/22
FYI - the offset rings are only available in 1”. Keep this in mind when selecting a scope and hoping to go this route…
just about anything lower power leupold or the old zeiss conquest lower power works very well

My only No. 1 is a 1B in .308. It had a 3.3-10 on when I got it. I immediately replaced it with a VX-iii 1.5 - 5. I had no problem setting it up with oem Ruger rings and it makes a trim, easy handling rifle. It shoots around an inch and has killed some deer for me.
I use a Loop M8 4X on my RSI 7x57. That long tube makes positioning easy. 4X is plenty for the ranges you stated.

Heck! I put a SWFA 3-15 on one of mine. Modified a EGW base so the scope would clear the front.

My B in .22-250 wears an old Vari X iii 3.5-10X.
Getting older, neck doesn't work as well.......even for T shirt wearing chuck blastin, I had to move the scope back and that mandated a rear offset ring.

On my RSI w old M8 4X.....just barely needed an offset ring. Ran it one yr w regs but some steep angle stuff was a chore.
Move that scope back just a bit and it was more comfy all around.

Wasnt wearing too thick of coat either.

Yes, aesthetics are important. Why else run a #1?
If I build one will use the EGW and modify it.
The EGW may have "too much" material wink which is better than "too little".

Aint fat or funky build. Reg Remington stuff fits me very well. Ruger #1s are cool but they have some "quirks".
For a gun that heavy they kick harder than they should. Factory pads (red) suck.
Am debating tearing my #3 apart for a build.

Good old Conquest 3-9x40 worked well on my wife’s 25-06. The long eye relief was welcome due to mounting limitations on a #1.
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: Ruger No 1 Scope Option - 10/01/22
I put a VX-3I 3.5-40 on my last, a new 1V .243, with good results. Obviously a straight tube wasn’t right for that one. For a 1A or even a B for the use described, a nice 1-6 should do nicely. Recently I had no trouble hitting stuff out to 300 with a 1-6 Triji on my Grendel.

That 1V went down the road as soon as I saw a 6mm Fieldcraft for sale, something I did right for a change.

Yep, Conquest 3-9X40 MC, 4" constant eye relief, standard Ruger low rings. 257 Roberts. The 4X Conquest works in low Ruger rings also.

One of my very favorite reasonably priced hunting scopes. I pick them up whenever I find one for a good price on eBay, GunBroker ect. Pretty good glass, good reticle, rifle mounting friendly, fairly lightweight, there isn’t anything to not like.
