I'm looking for something to put on my son's tikka 17 hmr.

I'd like to get something in the 4-12 ish power range with parallax adjustment. Not to heavy or clunky, no need to dial it, it will be a set and forget.

Any recommendations appreciated

Thanks
Burris e 1 4.5x14 long range moa

I'd second fotis there. Dunns is running a good deal on them.
I don't know how long these deals on Burris Fullfields are going to last:

Barska or Schmidt and Bender budget?
Probably somewhere between the two Paul.

I've got an older 4-12x40 AO leupold on my 17 hmr and it's about perfect, if they were still an option I'd buy another.

I have one of these on a 17 HMR and it works well. I think it's a good value choice.

same scope I have on my savage LH 17 HMR, works awesome.
While working part time at a gun store, I picked up a Hawke 4x12 with hold overs and illuminated reticle in two colors. I really like it.
I haven't bought any 17HMRs or 17HM2s lately, but I have put Weaver V16s, 4-16x42AO, and Bushnell A17s, 3.5-10x36AO, on a few heavy barreled 17 rimfires. I put Weaver RV7s and RV9s on light barreled 17 rimfires.
I have a Burris Signature HD 3-15x44 on my CZ 457 17HMR. Really like it.

I had a Burris Fullfield ll on my Tikka T1x and to me it was heavy and clunky(18 oz). With the rather large AO scope placement is critical to keep the AO from touching the barrel, it required finding a slightly higher than usual set of "medium" rings to have clearance and proper eye placement. I was not using a rail, I prefer mounting directly to the dovetail. I ended up putting a Leupold VX2 4-12 on it without the AO.

AO - I do not see the need for AO on the 17HMR unless you are planning to use it for 50 yard target shooting. The 17HMR has essentially the same point of impact at 50 and 100 yards and since most scopes are parallax free at 125 yards for a 17HMR hunting rifle there is no down side to not having AO in my experience.

I only used my 17HMR for gopher shooting and the sweet spot for its energy and trajectory is between 75 and 150 yards. Closer than that you may well be using a 22 LR further than that the energy and wind drift becomes problematic. Which brings me back to saying that the AO isn't necessary its just one more thing to mess with while hunting gophers and will cost lost shots while fiddling around with setting the AO.

Have you looked at Sightron S1 Series options?
If it's set and forget, I'd put a SWFA 10x. I've got one on mine and love it.
Thanks for the info guys.

I don't want a bigger, clunky scope since this will be my 11 year old son's rifle to knock about with. He also won't be dialing on this one, otherwise the 6x or 10x swfa would be the easy choice.

Doug, I think I'm gonna order an S1 sightron, the price is hard to beat and if the parallax becomes an issue, I'll put it on something else.

Thanks

Those S1's are tough to beat for quality & price. Sightron did well producing that line of scopes. Good quality, simple hunting scopes in the "right" variable powers
The 6x MQ is without peer. I hear they can take a lick too. Hint..................(grin)
Looks like Meopta discontinued these. Seems like an unbeatable price.

I have a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 on mine and it works well. Same basic scope as above but not the E1 reticle or magnification ring.
In no particular order, the Meopta and Burris are both pieces of fhuqking schit. Hint.............
Dude270: You do NOT mention what the uses will be for the sons Rifle in 17 HMR but I assume Squirrel Hunting and plinking with some "range work"?
Anyway my favorite scope for my several heavy barrel 17 HMR Rifles is for used Weaver V-16's (4 to 16 power variables with adjustable objectives)!
These work superbly for all manner of small game and Varmint Hunting - along with doing great duty at the range.
Best of luck to you with what ever you decide on.

I put a 4-12 and a 6-18 on both of mine. Same scope. Mark AR Mod 1. Both work great. Standard Duplex
