Those of us who have been pushing for lower Talley rings may have a "beware what you wish for" situation on our hands.

Here are some admittedly poor quality photos of a Leupold 3.5-10x 40mm VX-3 in extra lows on a Win 70. It comes pretty close to hitting both the barrel and the bolt handle. Scopes with different shaped ocular and objective bells might not have worked out.

There is a gap between the scope and barrel, but it is not much. The bottom of the scope is below the height of the barrel; if it had not started to taper down, they would not clear. This is a standard sporter taper barrel, by the way.

In this photo I merely wrapped a towel around the scope for better contrast.

For this particular scope, the extra lows are about ideal, but I can imagine some scopes not clearing. I don't feel like taking one of my Conquests off to see if it would fit, but I have hunch it might not.

How about the power selector, how close to the base?

Looks like a perfect fit to me, but I hear your note of caution with other combinations.

I had the scope mounted far enough back that the power selector was not over the base. I slid it forward and it appears that the gap is .04," best as I can judge.

If your definition of "perfect fit" is nestled in as low as it possibly can be--as mine pretty much is--then this would be the picture in the dictionary.

Looks perfect to me as well. I'd be interested to know if it'll fit a Rem 700 as well with that size scope.
Posted By: leftycarbon Re: Talley Extra Low Rings - 01/15/10
On my 700 with a 4.5X14X40 (1"version)it is about 1/8 from the barrel which is a #1 Hart. would be really close with a factory barrel or a shorter scope. Bolt clearence ok. Regarding the power ring it is very close and I can just get the scope forward enough not to be a problem...and I tend to crawl the stock a bit.

Still going to be really tight with a lot of scopes.

Called Talley today... Kimber 8400 X-lows are being made right now and will be available in a month.

I'll be putting a pair on my 300 WSM.

Great new. I've been after Talley to make an extra low rings for some time. The lows can be too high when running a McMillan Classic. I've got to pick up a couple pair.

Ordered a set here for my 7mm-08 SS a-bolt. Should be the ticket with that 60 degree bolt throw and get me to an even 7# scoped with a Leupold 2-7.
Posted By: Oregon45 Re: Talley Extra Low Rings - 01/16/10
Look about perfect for use with a 4x33 Leupold.

Also looks perfect for my 2.5-8's and 6X36's. Great news!

Here's my review for you guys as well...

Roger that. I just noticed a few people commenting on Remingtons. We need Rick to stick your thread and mine to the top.

If he would sticky yours, I will add my photos to it--that will keep them in one place. Then other people might add others and we could end up with a reasonably comprehensive archive.

UT, got a side view of the entire setup?

I think it would be pretty useful. Feel free to hit him up about it.

Where did you find them?

Do these show what you want? (I slapped the action I am working on in an old stock--thus the white dust in the checkering and the lack of a trigger.)

That looks pretty good. Thinking I should have ordered the EL Talleys

Aaargh

I WAS happy with the Talley lows on my 8400 but now I gotta wonder...

My M700's are a no brainer; extra-lows will be procured.

Good news, I guess, that they exist now but I'd just gotten everything converted to Talleys in the last year plus. Now I need to decide what needs re-converting.

I too bugged them for lower rings.

I tried the new extra lows in a standard LA model 700 7 rem mag with a 3.5-10 x 40. It just fit with front ring turned so it was closer to the rear. I am pretty much repeating what has been said.

The issue with the 90 degree base edge hitting either the magnification ring or front bell could be easily remedied by making a circular cut parallel to the scope tube into either offending pc. The cut would hardly be visible, I have done it with the front of a few picatinny rails for short bodied scope with 50 mm objectives. Seeing so many here have things cerro coated it would work out nicely. Even a small chamfer at a 45 degree angle would allow for a better fit. Just a thought.

Awesome news! I had read clark98ut's review where the 2.5-8X36 power selector ring would NOT fit over the rearmost portion of the base - I have mine mounted in lows currently and it is all the way forward. I went ahead and ordered one set anyway just to try 'em out on one of my M70's, but I haven't been able to get 'em mounted yet. Looks like I'll be ordering a few more sets now!

Thanks UT, exactly what I was looking for.
Posted By: TXRam Re: Talley Extra Low Rings - 01/23/10
Just remounted my VXIII 2.5-8X36 on my Win M70 300WSM, and the extra lows will allow mounting the power ring over the base extension of the rear ring. They are the perfect height for this scope!

Mounted the extra low rings on a Browning a-bolt II. Stainless synthetic model with a Leupold compact scope for a total weight of 6 7/8 pounds. With the low mounts it comes up to the eye like a nice shotgun does.

For all:

Is there any general agreement as to the minimum clearance needed between the scope and the barrel? I've always been surprised by the potential movement of seemingly rigid metal objects when subjected to significant forces.

Thanks for all the info! How close does the bolt handle get to the scope? Does it make cycling the bolt difficult? Can you get the neoprene scope cover over it or is it too close to the barrel? Also, if you were to do it all over again would you choose lows or extra lows? Sorry for all the questions. I'm going to be putting together the same combo but with a VX3i, I believe they're the same dimensions as the VX3.

Necro thread...
I can't really help much on a 7 year old thread. But I'll bet if you order a set of Extra-lows from Talley, and they don't provide the clearance you need, they would exchange them promptly.
