I have a Ruger M77/17HM2 (Mach 2) I'm wondering what scope I should put on it. Any suggestions would be considered.

Thanks

I put a Weaver V10 Classic, 2-10 variable, on mine. Works great.

Simplyme: I currently have a 3x9 variable scope on my 17 HM2.
If I were to come across a cheap used Weaver V-16 (4x16 variable) I would buy it and put it on my Rifle.
I think the 17 HM2 cartridge is accurate enough and performs well enough to justify a "higher" power variable with an adjustable parallax feature.
I tried to get a hint as to where you live and what you might be Hunting (or at what distances you may be shooting) without success.
So let me ask you what are you going to be shooting and at what distances?
I am currently looking for good deals on 17 HM2 ammo myself.
If you are new to the 17 HM2 then hold on - they are tons of fun and all the ones I am familiar with are rather accurate indeed.
Best of luck to you with your 17 HM2.

The Leupold VX-II 3-9x33mm AO Rimfire EFR would be my choice.

I live in B.C Canada, I will be shooting grouse, gophers and target shooting. I found my self a new never fired Ruger M77/17HM2. If they ever stop producing 17HM2 I can atlest swich over to 22LR.....lol
My Cooper in 17Mach2 wears a Kahles CL 3-9x42.CDNN had them on clearance for around $600 so I had my dealer import a couple of them to try.Myself and a few friends did a side by side comparison with the VX3 3.5-10x40,and we all agreed that the Kahles optics were superior. As a result,we purchased six more of the Kahles scopes between us.My dealer in Canada imported the last 20 of the Kahles 3-9x42s that CDNN had,and he had them all sold before he even received them.

I had those exact scopes on both of my Cooper rimfires, but I sold both to replace them with the Kahles scopes.

I've been shooting a 77/17 heavy barrel for three years now. I've had three scopes on it and the best of them for carrying and handiness has been a Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32 AO. It depends on your budget. Budget large, the Leupold 3-9x33 is tough to beat for the purposes you laid out, and moreso if you'll be hunting more than target shooting. If I hunted with mine more, I'd probably be saving my quarters and dimes for that scope.

But, if you're going to target shoot more than hunt, I'd look hard at the Timberline. The extra magnification is nice on the eyes staring at paper and tiny little .17 holes at 100 yards. If your budget is smaller, take a long look at the Vortex Crossfire 4-12x40 AO. I have one of those too, and actually prefer it for range duty and long sessions of punching paper. It has a fine crosshair instead of duplex or ballistic plex. Doug or Neil at CameraLand will treat you right on one of those, too.

I expect you'll love the rifle and the M2. It's a cool little rimfire!

Merry Christmas!

Best -
Andy

I just put a Leupold 3.5X10 A.O. on my new Cooper 17 HMR.

With the parallax set at 25 yards, I can shoot "rodents" out of my bird feeders.

For Sage Rat hunting, I can crank the parallax up for shots at a cupple hundred yards.

This scope works ideal for me. Too bad Leupold no longer produces it.

For the hotter rimfire rounds like the 17s, I think the 4-14x mag range is about ideal.

The problem is good scopes with AO in that range are a bit pricey.

One of the very best buys in a rimfire scope is the Mueller
APV (All Purpose Variable)

Only costs about $115 most places. has nice optics tracks out well and has AO. Good size and power range. I owned one for a while a few years ago and liked it very much.

Also, Mueller backs their stuff pretty well.

The guys over on rimfire central have always thought highly of them. If you can't swing a Leupold, etc , maybe you should check them out.

SWFA carries them as well as other online dealers-
