I just recently bought a 1954 Husqvarna 1600, 24" barrel in .30-06 with the high comb stock. The rifle was factory drilled and tapped and obviously had a scope mounted before. In fact, with that high comb, the iron sights are almost unusable. Can anyone recommend a good scope for this gun? I'd like to keep the glass cost to no more than I paid for the rifle, which was $335. Thanks for any help/suggestions or advice!
Gary
Lots of options in your price range. For myself, I tend to default to leupold though I have had a few redfield revolutions that I thought were a lot of scope for the money. You looking for a variable or fixed power, and what sort of magnification? Those Husqvarnas are pretty nice rifles!
Here is a link to a pretty good husqvarna thread, with lots of pics on possible combinations for you.

Thanks for the info Pat. I've just started on the canadiangunnutz thread, gonna be readin' that for a while. smile

I was thinking something in 3-9 x40 perhaps. I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 on a Swiss K-31 and love using that. But I also have a Weaver K-4 fixed power on another rifle and like it fine.
You can easily find a NIB Leupold VX2 3-9x40 for less than $300 or a VX1 3-9x40 for less than $200.
260Remguy, what's the basic difference between those two models? Thanks, Gary
I'm not an optics expert, so I can't speak to your question in great detail. Distilled down to the basics, the VX2 has higher grade components than the VX1. While the difference isn't great, I believe that the VX2 is always a better choice for a 1st tier rifle. For a truck gun or a loaner, the VX1 is a fine choice, but if you ever have a chance to take aim at a once in a lifetime trophy, I like the peace of mind the higher grade scope provides.

That said, lots of great deer have been taken with lessor scopes.
Natchez has the 2-10x42 Weaver Super Slam on sale for $279 right now...don't think you can beat it for that price. I'd rank it right up there with a VX3 Leupie....
That Weaver does look like a good deal at that price. I'd think it would do anything my family would need. I wonder how low I can go with the scope and still have room for that 42mm objective to clear the barrel?

Here's a couple pics of the rifle:

I have a bunch of Husqvarnas built on the HVA 1600 series action and have no objective clearance issues with 40mm objectives in low rings Leupold/Redfield turn-in style mounts or with Leupold QRs.

Since the HVA/1600 series hasn't been made since the late-1960's or early-1970's, your options might be limited. My "shooter" Husqvaras in 256 Newton and 338-06 have Weaver bases and Warne rings on them.

Has the stock been shortened on your rifle?

That's good info to know, thanks! I don't think it was shortened but apparently, it is a custom-ordered stock (extra tall comb) made by a stockmaker or gunsmith in Sweden, where supposedly it was a common practice among hunters. Well, this I've been told by a poster on another board, somewhat of an expert it seems. He also clarified it as a model 1640 Std.

My son pointed out that it looked to have had the original comb sawed off and then a splice added with the original put on top. That may be how it's done? There's a nick in the top front edge of the comb where the bolt has struck it upon removal, repeatedly over the past 60 years. I guess it has some history.
Texgunner,
All of the previously mentioned scopes are good suggestions for your budget.
Here is another:
Go to Euro Optics website (eurooptic.com)and look at the closeout deal they have going for the discontinued Zeiss 3-9 Conquest for $299.00.
It's a lot of glass for the money.
Good luck,

Good advice; great scope.

The Zeiss deal is hard to beat. It looks like the one in europtic's ad has their name in white on the right side of the eyepiece. Do all their Conquests ship like that? Odd.

The 2-10x42 Weaver Super Slam would be great too, at $280 shipped vs $320 shipped for the Conquest...

I've noticed that Weaver bases are about $12 a set cheaper than Warne bases. Any advantage in the Warne bases? I probably will use Warne Maxima Q/D low rings; I like the vertical split and have used several sets before with good results.
I ordered the Zeiss from eurooptic. I have a set of Warne Maxima medium QD rings that I'll try first. The Weaver bases will be here Monday and the scope arrives this Friday. Thanks for everyone's advice! Much appreciated!

Good luck with your gun Texgunner.... smile

Thanks a lot! grin
I took some pics today, I'll try to have a few in here soon.
LEUPOLD M8 4X on mine.
Well, my project has hit a little snag. I have taken the rifle apart for a good cleaning and find that I have a broken safety lock spring. It's a really small piece of spring steel that holds tension on the sliding safety. Is there any source for something like this, or am I left with "rigging" something up? Thanks for any help!
Gary
$335, you stole that rifle! I had a fixed 4x Leupold M8 on mine, looked great on it and peformed well.

Your budget has lots of options, as a few have mentioned I don't think you'll find better glass for $335 than that zeiss conquest.
These folks have helped me with parts for my Husqvarnas:
