ok fellas so I'm,santa, is getting my almost 8yo son a CZ-455 scout for Christmas and I'm looking for a decent scope. I've always been a leupold guy, until recently going the Czech meopta way for my centerfires, but I really don't wanna spend that kinda coin for his first scope. I just checked out leupold's site and wow what happened? no more vx-1,vx-2?? anywho on to my question. so,i'm currently looking at Bushnell rimfire optics 3-12x40 with multi-x ret and a Nikon pro staff 5 3.5-14x40 with nikoplex ret. what do y'all think as I do want the trad ret of a crosshair to teach him and not the busy ret that seems to be popular these days. I'm even thinking about getting a Nikon prostaff 2-7x32 with nikoplex ret to put on there for after Christmas morn as I'm planning on trying to teach him the basics of irons first and foremost. But, we have very limited time so I'd rather teach the mechanics of trigger pull and breathing vs iron sights if push comes to shove. don't get me wrong kids need to learn irons but all of our centerfire deer guns are scoped so this lesson would be strickly for nostalgia and a just in case scenario. out of the couple scope I've narrowed to what say y'all?
thanks,
Big Ed
May I suggest the #174178 Leupold VX-Freedom 2-7x33 - Duplex or their #174180 VX-Freedom 3-9x40 - Duplex?
I would but a Japanese Weaver rimfire model before any your picks.
I think I wouldn't want a great big scope like the Bushy 3-12x40 or Nikon 3.5-14x40 on a little bitty .22 like the scout. Personally, I'd put a smallish rimfire scope like the Weaver Classic 2.5-7x28 rimfire on it.
Doug I appreciate the Leupold thought and still might go that way but I really wanna try something a little diff. ok men that suggest the weaver what about the weaver RV-9 3-9x32AO? is that one Japan made? where does it stack up in brightness to a 5-6 yr old leupold vx-2 2-7x32?
thanks,
Big Ed
Been thinking of a Hawke Vantage for one of my rimfires in need of Optics.

No complaints on the Leupold 2-7x33 Duplex (non-rimfire model) - good luck.

Hawkes are great scopes and very under priced for what you are getting

Clearidge Optics. Definitely worth a look at.

One of the last manufacturers to make a gloss scope.

Cherry-picking these parts of your query makes me think of a straight 4x rimfire scope. I've used a Nikon ProStaff 4x32 Rimfire and a Vortex Crossfire that were both extremely good, and both right at $100 at the time. For all I know, they might have been the same scope, with different badges on them. They were clear, sharp, and bright, with a simple duplex - WORLDS better than any blister pack 4x scopes, but not costing an arm or a leg, either.

For an 8-ish year old, keeping the scope simple might leave nothing else to concentrate on but trigger prrrrressssssss and breathing. What's more, crosshairs don't wiggle as much at 4x as they do at higher magnification. wink

Just a thunk.

Hey, I'm not the first to totally disregard this part of your post... laugh

Be sure to let us know what you end up deciding on. And post a pic of the kid's face when he opens his present!

Check this one out. Gloss, some ring marks. The low power is a good confidence builder shooting off hand. Not as much wiggle or at least the perception of such. May be able to negotiate the price somewhat.

DF
any of the Weaver rimfires
I've had good luck with the Weaver 3-9x and 2-7x rimfire scopes. Also, the Weaver V-16 is a nice scope if you want more power..

Easy choice. The 2-7x Nikon.

You know, I think an 8 year old will do just fine, and be thrilled, shooting an old El Paso Weaver K4 or K6, like this one. Clear and bright, simple, fine crosshair. If the kid drops it and breaks it you throw it away and buy another one. I see them on eBay all the time for $30 - $60. A great classic, too.

I'm basically a Leupold guy but wound up with a 2-7x 32mm Vortex when I purchased my CZ-455 in 2017. The shop let me take it outside and play with it in real world conditions and after doing that and comparing price I bought it right then. Still no complaints and I'm real satisfied. 2-7x works well for what I do with a rimfire which is basically plinking & small game and my 10/22 also wears a 2-7x scope.

Weaver RV-9's on both my kids CZ's, one a 452 Scout the other a 455 American. AO is nice for shooting close, something to consider for an 8 year old. As I understand it the Clearidge is almost the same scope, made in the same factory.
Keep it simple, a Simmons 22 mag, 4x32 rimfire scope will do just fine. For the time I spend using mine, it works
just fine.

You can always upgrade later.

I have the Vantage 4x32 both in Mil Dot, and one's AO. Don't hesitate, just buy while you can. $70 or less optics bargain.

I have two Leupold 3-9 scopes. Each is smaller than the regular 3-9 and has EFR (AO). The older one is badged Ultralight and the newer one which seems identical is badged as a rimfire scope.

I also bought a cheap Winchester 3-9AO from Academy for $29.95 and put it on a Remington 511. The combo is a ragged hole group maker at 25 yards. I bought the second mentioned Leupold to replace it, but why? The Leupold is still in the box.

Best,

Jack

I have the Vortex 2-7 rimfire on Henry 22 mag and it works great. I also have a SS 6X on an abolt 22 mag that I like more with the AO, but wouldn't give a kid a scope with the Christmas tree reticle like the SS. The Vortex is inexpensive and works well.
I would mount one of the Weaver rimfire model scopes.
