I have a Winchester Grand European double rifle in 257 Roberts that came to me with the provided scope rings. They are 1". This rifle won't be a long range shooter but I do like to have a larger FOV and OB than one might have on the standard 2.5-8x36 Leupold.
So what do you guys say? What is your favorite 1" hunting scope? I don't anticipate any shots on game longer than 300 yards.

Coyotes and pigs do not fall under the 300 yard rule.

Mine is one you probably didn’t anticipate,a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40...
Posted By: OSU_Sig Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19
Its one I had not thought of but I agree with you that it's a great scope.
Posted By: HeavyBarrel Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19
I like the 3.5-10X40 VX3 or a 3-9X40 VX2 or Freedom. Just what I prefer, got several of each on various rifles.

VX3i 3.5-10
Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 is a favorite for me, nothing fancy but it works.

I do have a Swarovski Z3 3-10x42 with the BRH reticle that is up next if I don't find anything better.
A fixed 6 Weaver would be pretty slick.
Posted By: Lw308 Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19
I just put a Vx-3i 2.5-8x36 on my .25-06 it's nice. Also have a 3-9x40 VX Freedom, it's nice too.

call Doug and get a Meopta
Posted By: Mull Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19
Had Most Of Them All.. And For Me Nothing Beats The Swarovski's 3-10-42 With 4A..Most Of The Time, Its Dark When I Go In The Woods And Dark When I come Out..I Prefer The AV's To The Z-3's. Have Several Of Both. Seems The Light Doesn't Wash The Cross Hairs Out On The Older AV's. And They Can Be Mounted In Low's On a LA Mountain Rifle.. The Z3 Can Not..

Someone just snagged a meopta in the classifieds for $238! Steal of the day.

The Vortex Razor HD LH 1.5-8x32 is up there for me.
Posted By: backtobethel Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19
Meopta 6x42
Leupold 3.5-10, gets my vote.
I like the old vari x III'S.
Since it’s a double rifle it needs something German on it. Zeiss conquest maybe one of the older ones that meopta made. 3-9x40
Posted By: TX35W Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19
If you don't have to dial, the Swaros are awesome, and for the money the 1" tube Leupold are great. If you are dialing a lot, prepare to add 10 ounces and go with a 30mm scope.
Posted By: TxHunter80 Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19
Meopros are tough to beat
Posted By: sandcritter Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19
Easy. It’s begging for a fixed power, fairly petit. Swaro or kahles 4x (or 6x) w/ a proper #4. Performance:size and weight ratio has it, and the reticles don’t wash out.

The meopta 6x is nice, but larger, heavier, and have had two #4’s of theirs that washed out something fierce (the #1, on the other hand, did not). The meopta 4x imported Stateside is really really nice but, again, longer and heavier than needs to be.

A solid alternative, leup 4x33 or 4x28. Or leup 2-7x28. Duplex.
Posted By: Gasman Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19
My favorite 1" scope would be the Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40 with green dot duplex. Reliable, light, good hunting reticle, and nice glass. Although I don't know how it'd look on a double rifle...
Posted By: Hammerdown Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19
Leupold 1.5-5 would work on a rifle like yours.

Hammerdown, Bingo. Being a combo and drilling fan, much like your Win double rifle. Mounting the scope LOW is a real plus, I'd give up a couple X's to get it low. You want it to be fast handling, when the butt hits your shoulder you should be seeing through the glass without having to bob your head around. 5x will get you to 300 without a problem.

Agreed, I wish I would have bought several of these at close out prices. Got a 3-10x50 on a 7-08 that’s a favorite.
Posted By: jwp475 Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/10/19

I'd go with a Tract Toric 2X1042. They are very very good scopes
Posted By: VaHillbilly Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/11/19
I have owned more scopes by different makers than i can remember and I liked most of them but some of my favorites have been the Leupold VX3i 3-10x40 and Vx3i 2.5-8x36 also the Bushnell Elite 3-9x40 (these are excellent scopes for the money) and probly my very favorites are the Swaro Z3 2-10x42 and 3-9x36. All of these have been excellent scopes for me.....Good luck 👍.....Hb
I have a couple of VX3i 3.5-10X40 and a few VX3 1.5-5X20 and happy with them all. But the OP asked which was our favorite. For me, that would be the VXll 2-7X33. Lite, compact, clear and bright. In my personal opinion, just about perfect for virtually everything I will hunt in my lifetime. I have 6 or 8 rifles wearing them now and 2 more NIB in the safe that I bought when they discontinued the line. Bad move Leupold!!!

It’s what I have on all of my hunting rifles now. A grossly underrated scope imho.

Meopta 6x, 3-9x40, 3.5-10x44
Posted By: OSU_Sig Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/11/19
I have remounted the Swarovski Z3 3-10x42 to the Winchester and thought I would post it here for all to see. Although the OB appears to be in conflict with the folding rear site, it actually clears it quite well.
There have been some really good suggestions and I thank you all. I don't know if the Swarovski will remain on the rifle but I believe it will be sufficient for the time being.

Great looking rifle, and a great choice on the eyepiece...
I was looking for something pretty comparable: 1” tube , max 42mm objective (or 44), less than 20 oz. for a svelte rifle)This Thread should be at the top because there is good starting info here for people looking for a similar scope. .Not everyone wants or needs a 30mm tube.

The Weaver grand slams were mentioned several times in this thread and they are made in Japan so I ended up buying two of those in 3-12 x44( duplex and BDC) for my purpose. Once you go above a 2.5-8x36mm or so scopes jump way up in objective, weight, 30mm tubes m etc...

I know 30mm, fancy lit reticle, and tall turrets w/ zero stops have their place. We all hunt different terrain , shoot shorter or longer distances, etc... , but I think this little scope will do well for Eastern deer and general game hunting.

Something about that rifle screams for a fixed power scope. The 6x42 from S&B can be found in both 1" and 30mm configurations, and their A4 reticle will show up in the worst of lighting. A used one can be found for rather reasonable prices.

I really like the S&B 6x42 with their #4.
Posted By: OSU_Sig Re: Best 1" hunting scope - 12/11/19
The 1" requirement has to do with the scope mount that came with the rifle. Having said that, I'm afraid a 30mm scope might be too much from a aesthetic standpoint.
Bobby, I have considered a 1" fixed 6. I have a Leupold FXIII 6x42 that just might be the bees knees...

If ya had 30mm tings I have a 30mm tubed Leupold European 1.25-4 collecting dust in the safe.

Here in Alaska I ran a Leupold VXIII Matte 2.5-8x36 with a Duplex reticle on a .338 Winny since they first came out long ago. I never dialed with it and it was strictly a "set & forget" hunting scope. I fired many a 250 grain bullets using that scope for many years. It was plenty good for 400 yard moose and caribou hunts and years of using it taught me hold over. It now sits on a 338-06 I made up for a grandson.

I replaced it with a Nightforce SHV 3-10x42 illuminated and ordered the dialing tape so I can dial a 500 yard shot if I ever need to. I think a B&C reticle could be use out to 500 yards once hold over is learned and maybe the same for a Leupold Post-Duplex reticle. I have a newer VX3i version on a little Husky 1640 Light in 30-06 and it will be a "set and forget" scope for my use.

Alaska hunting, at least for me and the majority of those I know is mostly a non dialing scenario. Must be different in the "lower 48".

I am still learning this dialing stuff, got a late start in life. But the freezer is full of moose meat, so.....

+2, this is my GO TO scope for the majority of my hunting needs. I killed a big boar Wed night way past too dark to shoot with my scope on 6X, couldn't have made this shot without the green dot.

I have and have had several nice 1” scopes. The swaro z3 is hard to beat for light weight. I think the meopro is probably the best bang for buck.
My opinions change sometimes but for now my favorite would be a Zeiss Diavari c 3-9x36. It is compact and light. Clearest scope in that range I have.

I don't know if they have changed the reticle or not. My Summits are 15 or so years old and have the No. 7 reticle. I will admit it is not as bold as I would like but I find it perfectly usable for what I do.

I did see all the calls for the Meopta just no one Saying Zeiss by name. I recently was able to purchase my first Conquest and I'm amazed at the quality. Picked up a 3.5x10x44. Puts my Vortex Viper with a 30mm tube to shame.
I will be making some scope changes on all my rifles as soon as I can
