Sent a scope in 3 weeks ago and haven't received an email or other confirmation that they received it. Is this normal? Or do they normally just repair and ship back with no communication?
Posted By: TOPCATHR Re: Leupold warranty service - 01/17/20
I sent in a scope in early November and didn't get notification until around 3 weeks. They said it takes approx. 18 working days to get it back. That was pretty much the way it went. I think this must be the busy time for them.
Have to wonder if their custom shop reorg has affected service too. I have several I need to ship.

Their customer service is not nearly as good as it used to be.

Sent one in recently, took about 5 weeks to get it back. I did receive any communication (tracking #) until they shipped it back.

Sent in a VXIII 2.5-8 that gave up the ghost in mid December, and just received an email saying "We estimate your product to be completed in approximately 7 weeks from when your product arrived."

Looks like they're running just shy of 2 months backlog at the moment.

I sent in a banged up scope around the end of the first week of December and it was returned to me (fixed) a few days ago. No communication other than when I asked, and I got the "it usually takes about a month" line, which was pretty much spot on. But I had no idea what the prognosis was between the time I sent it in and the time I got it back (glad they didn't replace the scope, as the one I sent in worked perfectly).

I live within driving distance. Dropped one off, filled out the form, and it came back good as new a couple weeks later. I think I got a tracking notice as soon as it shipped. This was probably 6 weeks or so ago
Sounds like their repair shop is busy.

I hope they aren’t going belly up
Appreciate the replies. Hopefully they don't try to replace. It's got sentimental value. Only issue was power adjustment ring was tight as hell. Could barely turn it. Uncle had it on a .375 H&H and rear ring was jammed against the power ring. Assuming this had something to do with it.

I had the same issue with a VX-II a couple of years ago after the scope was on a hard kicking .35 Whelen. Leupold fixed it promptly and returned. Screw in the erector assembly shook loose. Similarly problem with a Kahles 2.5-10x a year later. Neither scope lost zero, just hard to manipulate the power ring. Happy Trails

I sent in Vari-x II 3-9 a couple weeks ago due to floating zero. Just received an email this morning estimating 7 weeks for the repair. Either their service is slipping or they are awfully busy fixing non-existing erector issues with their scopes.

If that were Swaro you'd be lucky to get it back that fast. My buddy sent in his Zeiss spotter due to a broken focus wheel and it took them 7 months, not weeks.

I think we're lucky that Leupolds are still USA made. I own >30 Leupolds - some old, some new. Rarely do they have to be returned but 6-8 weeks seems to be the norm. Probably the industry norm, too.

I had a Leica spotter with same issue and it took 9 months !!!!!
The last Leupold that I sent in was in 2015, they had it fixed and back to me in 3 weeks.........sounds like things have changed shocked

I have sent back more Leupolds than I can count and it appears that ever since they got into the CDS game the repair times are significantly backlogged. Has to a be a direct effect of many a dialing scopes ( with no erector issues) needing fixed! I remember when they only had your set it and forget it scope for a week and it was on its way back. It took 6 weeks to get a generic MOA dial the last time I ordered one.....seriously?

This was my experience as well, I sent one in back in Oct/Nov time frame. I took a little over 3 weeks total, and I only knew they got it when they send me the tracking number.
So I got an email on Feb. 5th that my "order" had shipped. Guy me this evening, the 14th (9 days later) that It hadn't arrived. Tracking shows a departure scan from Portland Oregon on the 6th an then several "severe weather conditions causing delivery delays" and then a arrival scan in Greensboro N.C. today. WTF? I miss some catastrophic weather event between the east and west coast? 9 days? I could've drove there and back twice.
I ordered a CDS dial a week ago and was told to expect 4-6 weeks. I got a shipping notice today with a tracking number. Proll be two weeks total.

Got a scope back in three weeks that I dropped on my concrete loading floor. Dent tube chipped glass. Completely rebuilt no cost other than shipping it in.

I scratch my head at quotes like this. First off I am not disbelieving your claim or having a shot at you AlaskaCub. I just find it hard to understand.

I have been using Leupold scopes for about 25 years now and have owned over 20. I have scopes ranging from old VariX llc and M8 to new VX3i and FXll and everything in between (VXlll and VX3). I hunt every weekend for about eight or nine months of the year and my rifles and scopes get used. I look after them and don't bash them around but I do a bit of bush bashing in some hunting situations. In all that time I have only ever had to send one scope in for repairs. It was an M8 6x36 that had a loose front lens. I could put my thumb on it and slide the lens round about 1/2 a millimetre. It was sent off to the Australian Leupold repair shop and returned as good as new. That's the whole issues I have had with over 20 Loopy scopes in 25 years. The two newest scopes (2.5-8x36 VX3i and a FXII 6x36) tracked in exactly when sighting in at the range.

The VX3i was so precise it only took seven rounds to sight the rifle in without bore sighting it first. First shot at 25m was three inches left and about an inch and a half low. I clicked 48 clicks right and the next shot was below the square an inch and a half. I then fired a shot at 100m and it hit two inches high but about 3/4 inch left. A second shot landed about five millimetres next to the first. I clicked three clicks right and let the barrel cool. Then I fired a three shot group and they all clustered into a group dead in line and two inches high. The group was about 1/2 an inch. It was that easy. The FXll was also very easy to sight in with precise click adjustments.

Obviously my experiences are vastly different to other peoples. All of my Leupolds are on calibres from .22 up to 8mm with a 4x33 on my 9.3x62. Maybe others are having issues on harder recoiling rifles? I also set and forget and am not a turret twister. So I find it confusing to see such differing experiences with Leupold scopes by different people. Maybe I haven't bought enough of the newer models (but two out of two have proven to have very precise click adjustments) but I can only go on my own experiences over the past 25 years.

However, there are enough people on here with bad experiences that I believe Leupold must be having some issues at the moment. The life time warranty must cost them a hell of a lot too compared to other manufacturers. With the down turn in the economy Leupold must of had to make some cuts to their production to stay viable which seems to have effected their quality in recent years. They have cut numerous lines out including the great little 6x36. I guess they are having to restructure to stay a viable manufacturing business to stay competitive with all the Asian scopes on the market. I'd bet someone at Leupold must be monitoring sites like this to see the amount of people turning against them. I'd assume, rightly or wrongly that Leupold will have to regain the quality control that they used to have or continue to loose sales. Or maybe move manufacturing off shore to build reliable scopes at a competitive price. Would people buy an Asian built Leupold?

I think Leupold's quality control issues are indicative of the pressures home grown companies are experiencing with the ever increasing competition from cheap Asian imports. It's happening everywhere, just think of the car industry. Every time someone buys an Asian Burris for half the price of an American made Leupold, it just makes it harder for Leupold to compete. Maybe staff have had to be laid off which could be one reason the warranty claims are taking longer to be processed than they once were.

Anyhow, I hope Leupold get things sorted out and reclaim their place as one of the best optics companies.

I'm a non-abashed fan boy. Every Leupold I have does what I want it to. I set and forget, so I guess my opinion doesn't matter here. For my use, I have no reason to crank on the adjustments while shooting. If I was out West and shooting 1000 yards, I suppose I'd get a scope made for that. If I only have 3 to 4 hundred bucks to spend on a scope, you can bet it will be a Leupold.

I guess I'll continue to buy them until I personally experience a problem. Next one will probably be a 6x42.

I have used Leupold scopes since the late seventies. I recently purchased a VX5-HD, mounted on my Tikka 260. Bore sight shot was three inches right and one inch high. Dialed in clicks to zero, next shot was five and one half inches right and two and a quarter inches low. Shot a three shot one ragged hole group here. Dialed in clicks to zero and next two shots were not on the paper. Called Leupold and was told I had a mounting problem, send scope back. Installed my VX3i back on gun and had zeroed in six shots.

I then decided to order a SHV from Doug, mounted on gun in same rings VX5 was mounted in and zeroed in six shots.

Leupold called after five weeks and informed me there is nothing wrong with my scope.
