Ok, I bought VXR 3-9X40 w/illuminated dot. The CDS card had already been used and the dot looked like a cross between a rectangle and the letter Z. Since I don't shoot at game over 400yds I decided to have the turret taken off and just have a regular cap re-installed. I told them to please fix the dot and please take off the turret and just replace the dummy cap. He told me the scope would go thru regular protocol and if anything was out of sorts that it would be addressed. He then told me that the turret issue would not be addressed because the shop that took care of such was closed and would not reopen for quite some time. I became somewhat incensed as I explained to him the turret could easily be removed and couldn't they just please remove it and put the dummy cap back on. I then got the feeling that neither of my problems would be addressed. It's not enough that I spent my own money to send it in but the fact that you never know who's working in what part of the company. I don't know guys, I'm just tired of the whole Leupold ball of wax. If anyone knows how to remove the turret and has a spare cap...please let me know. powdr
P.S. I'll admit I had to repent a little after the call but that smug son of a gun pushed my button.
They are going the wrong direction imo.
I don’t consider Burris much better. I had a vintage gloss 1.75-5.5 straight tube scope that would have been real handy on a woods rifle . The inside got debris in it (seal came apart?) and it was blurry at certain magnifications. I figured they’d clean it and service it under warranty. I sent it back and they said it was unrepairable . They replaced it with a $125 dollar 2-7 x35? I regret accepting that offer especially later once I realized they made a more straight tube comparable scope .

Ever think that maybe they don't have parts for those old scopes anymore?
Yeah I bought a scope w/ standard duplex figuring I could send it to them for a long range duplex. Called them and heard the same thing.
They don’t seem to understand the harm they’re doing their brand.
EFW, I told them they were dying of a thousand cuts and had their head in the sand.
The definition of insanity; Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results....
Keep buying them, keep returning them for repairs and keep bitchin about them.

People just now figuring Leupold out
LEUPOLD customer service isent what it use to be, they suck now
I have a dozen or more leupolds, all more than three years old. Some over 30 years old. They have worked great for me.
Started buying Zeiss several years ago.
Sad to see a good American company going south.
bean counters killing off another great company ,
Uhh, so, you want them to do Custom Shop work when the Custom Shop is closed? You bought a used CDS scope but don't want CDS and Leupold is F'd? .
BTW, had a VXR with same issue, they fixed it. I think it's a ragged cut on the fiber optic but not certain. It's not handled by the Custom Shop so no fret.... I have a trade 3-9x40 Firedot Duplex but it's Duracoated and can't do it until May roughly.

Did you buy the scope new or did you buy a fughed up used scope cheap, hoping that Leupold would make it like new?
Lifetime warranties can't last forever..

Might consider polishing up your 'slpainer skills since it's so wonderfully easy. And I'm sure they were tracking on the "dummy cap" explanation.

Bean Counters ie: Cost Accountants are hired by Mgmt. Managment of Leupold is at fault. They sure do sponsor some great hunting shows, have game recipes on their glossy POS website and pages and pages of print in magazines of all sorts.

And upset he had to pay shipping on the scope he didn't originally buy from them?
Lifetime warranties can't last forever..
I'd wager they'll fix the Firedot issue, given the chance to do so.... Leupold is not high on my love list, but damn, they've not failed here in the least from what I've read... If the OP wants a non-CDS VX-R scope, they're readily available.
Leupold's Custom Shop is CLOSED.

Cost Accountants give Management numbers , Management decides whether to implement or not.

What indicators are currently known to you this is true:
What are the bean boys telling management? Is Leupold close to turning off the lights? Are they not turning a profit? Laying off employees? Current cash in reserves? Planning on going public, due to the need to raise cash?
Some here are even upset that certain employees are wearing the flat brim hats that are currently popular with younger shooters and have tattoos. Doesn’t management realize the future is with the old farts who will soon not be shooting or hunting?
Sonny boy, I been hunting since only sailors and whores had tattoos!
Probably have you beat, scrimshaw is not too far back in my past and they wore those goofy three pointed hats...
Leupold will surely go to hell if they discontinue the fixed 3 and 4...Damn bean counters.....
I like my tough, simple, compact, and lightweight Leupold 1-4x20, 2x7, and 3-9x40 scopes.
I might try a Weaver V3 next though. For it's wider FOV
Look for a good used Weaver V3 since Weaver and Nikon are now history.
I'm inclined to purchase exactly what I want as opposed to doing conversions on something I don't.
Also, I never send an item to anyone without a front end conversation.
Imagine what our future frustrations will amount to now that electronics are being added to scopes. Components will be out of date and/or production in 6 months.
Look for a good used Weaver V3 since Weaver and Nikon are now history.
Really? I didn't know about Weaver.
Guys, I'm sorry I posted. First, I didn't know the custom shop was closed. I bought the scope knowing I wouldn't use the CDS but not knowing it would have to go to the custom shop to be removed. The red dot was totally unacceptable so I sent it back like any person that cares about their equipment would. I didn't know about the dot before buying it. When I began to pack it up, I thought I would ask them to remove the turret as well. I had no sneaky under handed plan. From now own I suggest anyone w/a problem run it buy [bleep] Skane or know it all Mt. Boomer before listing it on the fire, to see what their opinion is. Some people are just like SH...very shallow men. My intention was only my way of letting people here know that there are a lot of changes coming down the pipe at Leupold...and some may be not so good. Thanks, powdr
I have quite a few Leupold scopes, I like them, haven’t had any problems. I’m sorry you did.
Wow, I really toned it back.... Poor ol'pwdr can't get a break.
The dot is a simple warranty issue. Nothing has been or not been done yet and the whine is flowing. Phucqk's sake!
Try
WTB Leupold VX-R 3-9x40 Firedot Duplex ABSOPHUCKINGLUTELY not CDS
Powdr,
Thanks for informing is of the experience with Leupold. There was a time if I needed a scope that it would no question be a Leupold. These days , I’m going to Meopta for the same price point.
Thanks Hanco, I've been a Leupold man for going on 50 years. It's only really changed in the last 10 years or so. Crappy service, more variations of scopes than they can grace over and more than they can keep up with.
Outdoors, I have a Schmidt&Bender, 5 Leupolds and 2 Burris scopes but that is fixing to change. They just can't be trusted w/my money any longer. YMMV powdr
Part of the problem is that Leupold has a higher cost US based labor pool but most of the new competitors that have "great values" on their scopes manufacture in Asia. Many of us lament the decline in US manufacturing but then turn around and buy a cheaper China made scope.
We can't have it both ways.

Some of the best scopes produced in the world are made in Japan and they aren't inexpensive.
Bought used without checking for defects. Leupold will fix for free.
Mad they won’t pay for shipping on a scope he didn’t buy from them.
Same scope was something he didn’t really want. Which can be corrected when the Custom Shop reopens. Wants them to do it now for him, because he is for some reason special.
Whines on Campfire Leupold has lousy customer service

Thus has been common practice for many because if Leupold's lifetime warranty wijout restrictions. It appears that Leupold can no longer afford to honor thevwarrenty that they expressed.
In 2018 I bought a used rifle with a gloss Leupold Vari-Xii on it. The scope wouldn't quite focus all the way, had some blur. Sent it in and three weeks later I got a brand new gloss VX2 in the mail. Last October a co-worker had a gloss Vari-Xii that looked like you were looking through a straw. About five weeks later he got it back completely rebuilt with a list of all the parts replaced. I find them to be a great company!

This has nothing to do with me being a know-it-all – frankly, I'm wrong more in a day than I am right. But I am a realist.
You were mad because you approached this like you do every other dang thing here; like a true tight@ss, thinking you'd get something for nothing – like it's somehow owed to you.

What part of Leupold's warranty are they not honoring? They are willing to fix the defect for free. Does the warranty cover shipping on a scope not originally purchased from them? Nor does the warranty cover changes you want to make on a product that is not broken and only because you want something different. In addition to wanting it done on your time schedule. Irregardless of the current situation in the repair division.

Well, that explains a lot...Since I’ve been reading along as this thread grew, I had a feeling the friction from rubbing a couple of nickels together was gonna cause a fire in someone’s britches....😎
Leupold called-------they want the 1970's back.
You normally get it right Beav, however this time he clearly explained his good deed intentions. He was on a mission to save us all....
My intention was only my way of letting people here know that there are a lot of changes coming down the pipe at Leupold...and some may be not so good. Thanks, powdr

Paige said hi....
Well, put on your leisure suit, the naugahyde belt, and those white patent leather shoes, and go pay her a visit!
A silk shirt would be a nice touch too.

Salvation costs money...Unfortunately, for some, this is lost in the haze of saving a couple dimes. 😬😎

Lamb chop sideburns, porn mustache’s, flat brim hats, tats, and we have a new breed of American hunter running wild screaming send it with a 6.5 CreedMoor. 😎

Paige giggled and jiggled on that one. However, you have lost it if you think I'm going to the expense of getting to Colorado to borrow your stuff. Thanks for the thought, however keep your clothing suggestions to yourself. My suggestion to you would be to spring for a new issue of GQ. Anyway Paige is more into KUIU solids. Most especially their Attack pants.
GQ?? Who are you foolin, you just buy it for the pictures.
I just threw that out because you obviously need it. Paige and I usually shop for clothes together. I get soooo tired of giving my yes or no on all the Victoria Secret apparel.
However enough, let us not be accused of stepping on this enlightening thread.
I’ll check in to see if anything constructive is added by the OP. Until then I want to see if the fainting goats are up and about.

We can't have it both ways.
If they made a scope or were able to repair one so that it's mechanically sound and precise, nobody would whine about the price. It's not about where it's made, it's a problem with what they're making. Even worse, is the excuses they're making for VX series product. The VX series while optically superior to the Vari-X scopes, isn't anywhere nearly as mechanically sound. It's a rifle scope, it's gotta reliably steer the bullet 1st.
If indeed they phase out working on Vari-X series scopes, that will be a very sad day.
Skane, I'm retired and I watch my money closely cause I have a wife and son. Maybe when you retire you won't be able to afford those pen raised canned hunts. You're right about one thing...you are wrong about categorizing some person you've never met. You're just mad at people that won't bow down and kiss you're ring. Just like I said...a shallow man. People every day buy and sell things here to save money so start attacking them and kiss my ass. I tried to explain earlier what actually happened but a man like you just wants to belittle people. powdr
Not attacking Skane, but I offered to pay for having the turret removed. I figured the red dot would be fixed...no matter what. powdr

So it all can be summed up: Leupold's Custom Shop is currently closed.
OMG!
Ah, the cost of procrastination. I have a 4X with wide duplex that I had been meaning to send to the Custom Shop to have a heavy duplex installed. Sure wish I had gotten off my duff.

Looks like the offer to pay for the turret, is supposed to make up for the slam on Skane. No wonder he thought they should pay for shipping back on something he didn't buy from them. It's all coming together.

Well, pot, meet kettle. I've never been on a pen-raised, canned hunt in my life (nor will I ever) but you'd obviously never stoop so low to assume or categorize.
I'm reminded of the time a member sent you something-for-nothing (they paid the freight) and you didn't have the decency to even respond with a thank you.
So don't talk to me about character - there's thrifty, and then there are folks that think the world owes them something, you just happen to be more the latter.
Please, by all means, carry on here. And with your "I'm thinking of a number" game in the classifieds.

I'm glad guys still love Leupolds. I just sold an old Vari-X IIC 3-9x40 for $325.00!!!!! Thanks Leupold lovers...
It was on one of these boat paddle Rugers that I bought for $500.00:
Now I'm into the rifle for $175.00....

I’m grabbing Scooby-Doo snacks for this thread. WNut just provided some vibrant color and clarity to this discussion.
The Kane’s shooting high fenced game? Really?...Now, that’s almost funnier than this thread turning into the OP’s “This Is Your Life”.
