A buddy wants to mount a 6x SWFA on his AR for coyotes on the far side of hay fields.

Which ring height?

He's liking the 10x I have on a 6mmBR bolt gun and wants a 6x but neither of us has mounted a 30mm scope on an AR.

Suggestions on ring height? SWFA rings?

They are not like a bolt gun.
You want your rings to get the centerline of the scope 2.5" to 2.75" plus or minus above the center of the bore.
That is about 1.4" above the top of the rail.
That's the typical height of AR iron sights, and also works well for scopes.
But like all things about rifles, it is a personal thing.

Thanks,
I've had a red dot and low power scopes on ARs but the 30mm has me wondering..

I have a SWFA 10X using a 30mm Cantilever style mount/ring system with no issues.I didn't know how I would like it at first, but it's comfortable and no issues to worry about with clearance unlike bolt actions.

He’ll either need a cantilever Mount or special extremely high tings designed for an AR.

Thanks Gentlemen, I appreciate the help.
It'll be a cantilever mount and we'll see if there's a tax day sale this year.

I have a 6x MQ mounted on an 18" upper using an extended rail which is 0.5" high, I believe. And Seekins rings, which are 0.97" high.

I prefer to have the scope mounted more forward. Not quite NTCH, but easy access to the CH.

Another option is the 3-9x MQ.

You can either use high rings or a dedicated AR scope mount like the Burris AR-PEPR, I use a Geiselle Super Precision mounts.

I have zero issues with SWFAs SSALT mounts.

I'll have my buddy read this thread and see what he want's to spend his nickles on.
I'm thinking a 6x and SWFA tall rings would be the simplest route.

Thanks to all that replied!

It’ll never work

Y’all rings won’t get the scope far enough forward. A cantilever mount can be had for $40 and up.

I have both SWFA SSALT mounts and Burris XTR signature extra highs on AR’s. No problem with either.

Regardless of what you choose, take a look at how easy/difficult it is to use the charging handle once the scope is in place. Ease of use usually means mounting the scope far forward - which requires excellent eye relief - or getting high rings so you can reach under them.
