Am going on a firearm hunt over bait in the late summer and have told to be ready to deal with a lot mosquitoes.
Any suggestions on how to protect my head and hands? Is there some gear available that really works?
Advice welcome.
full brim hat with head net and gloves.
colorado bob recently posted a thread in the Alaska forum about a similar scenario. Might get in touch with him.
Thermocell works to keep the mosquitoes at bay.
Mosquitos get vicious on my bait sites late in the spring season. I just use an unscented deet product.
If planning on a head net, I much prefer one of black mesh than the green ones. Kind of like a neutral density filter. The green ones to me, are like driving into the sun with a smeared windshield.

Yeah buddy, this and more.

Thermcaell is your friend
here in South Louisiana - we have to hunt with a
https://shannonoutdoors.com/p/classic-double-guard-bug-tamer-plus-parka/ Worth every penny, mine is 10 years old and still in good shape
if you buy one, wash it about 10 times in the washer, it helps it breath better, when new they kinda hot in warm weather
Head net.
Picardin 20.
Permethrin spray on clothing or factory applied permethrin clothing.
Thermacell. Works well for us here even in early deer season near a swamp. Take plenty of refills if you’re running it for hours at a time.
100% deet on exposed skin. Permethian on all clothes. Have a Thermacell on before you get to the stand. Make sure you bring extra pads and butane...
Do this and you are golden.
Thermacell and mesh suit should be fine. I would not use deet due to bear may spook?
My outfitter in New Brunswick thinks bears may smell the Thermocell. He recommends hunters cover up.
Thermacell all the way.
To people who think it may scare bears, if they can smell it they can smell you too. Sitting there swatting bugs and fidgeting around will spook more bears than any bug spray or a thermacell.
I shot a BC eligible black bear, 21 6/16 once from the ground, 17 yards from the bait with buddy sitting next to me with a lit Winston.
They aren't dumb, they don't think that barrel is manna that fell from heaven. They know humans are in the area. Sit still and relax, if you try to sit super still you'll actually get more tense and fidget more. Relax is the key word, and i don't know anyone who can do that with mosquitos all over them.

Yep,used one on my bear hunt!
I just hunt in Proper 100% Ripstop Cotton BDU's, usually Woodland blouse over O.D. trousers unless I'm huntin' turkey.

I wouldn't use a thermacel over a baited bear stand. Most bear guides don't want their clients to use them because the bear can smell them easily, associate with someone sitting in a stand, and stay away from baits when one is in use.
ID LISTEN TO THE GUIDES THAT DO THIS FOR A LIVING.
Its very simple I've been doing it for over 50 years bear hunting and any other animal hunted from a permanent stand.......for weeks before the hunt put clothing that the person has worn with what ever insect repellent that is going to be used during the hunt.....I put out every couple days and any time it rains different cloths and insect repellant.....
Most bears will just walk in to a bait and don't even care your sitting there..... others will look and sniff then come in......
Thermocell. Killed many, many bears while using one. You’re not tricking their nose no matter what you do. Sitting still and being quiet seems to work best. Hard to do when you’re getting chewed on by bugs
As said on other thread, wear two complete layers of clothing. Light weight if it’s warm. Two head nets, Put one over a brimmed cap. Tuck or tape cuffs. Two pairs of gloves for sure. Cut eye holes in inner headnet for better vision. Be sure headnets are tucked in collar. It’s still kinda creepy sitting in a cloud of buzzing skeeters but you will not get bit.
FYI, Thermacells did not work at all for me. I threw them away. Also, when I use repellent, I always buy the low DEET concentration “Family” stuff. We used it when the kids were little to reduce toxicity to them. It worked so well I still use it. It lasts a few hours and is much less stinky than the high concentration spray.
Thermoelectric works. The bears don't seem to care. Act like you're a part of the landscape. Don't move if you don't absolutely have to. Make sure your clothes and raingear are quiet. The ears often circle the bait before coming in and will hold just inside the trees and look things over. They know you're there. If they don't see you as a threat in They come. If you can use the same bugs pray as the person doing the baiting so good. That smell means snacks. Above all have fun.
Thanks for all the comments and experiences. I need to get some clothing, spray and thermal cell. Hard to hunt anything when you are getting eating alive by bugs.
Wait till you're setting there and those bugs keep on crashing into the side of your head. As you sit still, keep telling yourself don't worry, they can't get to me. That buzzing sound will drive ya nuts!
Enjoy your hunt.
I think my record was 6 skeeters squished in one swat on the back of my hand on a bear sit. Those were the days before therma cell. The bugs were torture, but looking back, I'd love to go again. Bears are fun even when the mosquitoes want to eat you alive.
