Just now starting to think about booking a meat hunt - hearing good things about Axis Deer & thought I’d start looking into a Spring Doe hunt. Brief research points to Texas but wondered if other options are out there that I should check out.

I would think, that paying for a "meat hunt", would make for pretty expensive meat !

I see the difference between an Axis Buck and a Doe are about $2k. A $450 doe would probably do well for my needs. Just don’t know how to pick a good outfitter - I don’t have any experience with booked hunts - always been a diy guy.

We used to get a side of beef for $600.....
Don’t know about today, we just eat mostly venison.
But if $ is an issue, there are cheaper ways to fill the freezer.

Money isn’t an issue - just want a different experience, hunting in a new area plus I really, really like to bbq.

Don't pay attention to the guys saying this would be too expensive etc... My suggestion is go to the Texas Hunting Forum and register there. Lots of ranchers offer meat hunts for the female exotics. Price depends on who is offering and what they are but I have seen axis does for as low as $250 but will say that was before the freeze last year that hit the axis really hard. But you can get hunts for fallow deer does, blackbuck does, sika does and even red deer hinds and most of these hunts will also offer hogs and varmints (coyotes, fox, bobcat etc...) as part of the deal.

I’ve killed plenty of Elk and was hoping a shorter drive to TX (or closer) from VT would provide me with a new experience & a decent supply of tasty chops during a time of year that I’m typically just getting the garden going.

Look into nilgai. It's a fun hunt and yields a bunch of meat. I just got back 210lbs of meat from a bull. Cows will be cheaper but smaller too

Great point on the nilgai, from a "tonnage and girth" standpoint.

I can relate I enjoy eating different meats and wouldn't mind doing a hunt like yourself. Never realized there were packages offered for hunts geared towards meat.

Those that have done this - any outfitters that you’d recommend? Looks like Texas has the market cornered in these hunts and I can’t imagine all are equal.

I just bought a full grain finished buffalo, slaughtered, aged ,vacuum sealed frozen. $3200.About 370 pounds of meat. Great tasting.
They will let you go out and hunt one in a big pasture. Gut, skin,quarter it, and drop it in your truck.
About $3500 for a 2 year old cow, bulls run a bit more depending how big and how old.

Never considered Buffalo! I’ve enjoyed the flavor for a long time but only bought it at various meat shops
