I have always been intrigued by 150 in a 300 and recently bought some Norma whitetail ammo. The only weight they offer in that lineup is 150 grain. They are just Spire point bullets which I understand may “blow up”. Has anyone hunted with 150’s before In 300 and what was your experience? I have swift scirocco 2’s 150 grain and I may have to load those so any suggestions on powder for 150 grain bullets would be appreciated. If the spire points can hold up to 3200 fps then I’ll just hunt with those. Thanks

I’ve seen federal blue box 150s do just fine all the way up to moose in the 300 win mag. That includes large black bears too.

That being said, I just loaded up on sps lubalox 3rds in 180 accubonds for my 300 win mags and an all around bullet.

Back in the day (about 1 year before I took up reloading) I was shootin' factory 150 Silvertips in my 300 Winny. Couldn't even get a pass-thru on a broadside deer at point-blank range. Started loading 250 gr RN Barnes Originals - solved the pass-thru problem.

I would use a mono-metal bullet at 300 Winny speeds (if I still had one).

What's "Grade C" anyway?

180gr is an excellent all around bullet weight in the 300 Win mag.I've never used the 150gr in the 300 Win Mag,I'm sure they will kill stuff but,it would not be my choice unless it was a mono or a bonded bullet.Something that's often not to talked about is sectional density. Bullet construction is a bigger factor,but if you look at the most popular bullet weights for game bullets,a sectional density of around .250 or higher seems to be the most used weights for hunting bullets.

The great news of the Norma Whitetail ammo is that with a BC of .274 it's not going to be going very fast, for very long. It will be 2881 at 100yds and 2543 at 200yds.

180 gr Accubond "Grade C"

I used to shoot a Hornady 150 in my .300 Win. It turned out to be pretty tough on the meat. A LOT of bloodshot. First trip to Africa I took it loaded with 150 gr NPTs which it shot well. Did a great job on everything including eland, but still some definite meat damage.

Would you have any issues with putting lubalox down the bore of any of your rifles?

I've loaded plenty of 180 gr 30 cal Failsafe & Ballistic Silvertip bullets for my Win 70 300 Win Mag back in the day, for moose, black bear, mt. goat & blacktail deer,

can't say I've noticed any negative effects on the rifle but back then I lived on the coast and spent a great deal of time circling the Kodiak Islands via boat & kept my guns very clean

A 150 gr Barnes X won't blow up. 3200 fps is very fast for a cup-and-core bullet. Should still nuke a whitetail though.

The "Pigman" has a video on Youtube shooting an elk, that he dropped stone dead. He said, something to the fact, people told him 150 grain bullet was too small for elk hunting.

They're explosive but they kill stuff.

I've shot a bunch of critters with various 150gr bullets in various 300 mags but came to the conclusion that they really didn't kill animals any faster than the same bullet out of a 308 or 30-06, so now I only run the 300 mags when I need something in the 200gr range, more or less.
