I thought that the “fire” was for open discussion……much like the campfire at hunting camp! Perhaps he should have lead with “have you ever”! memtb

10+year old rams will be 300+ pounds. Have weighed a couple with guts in that were close to 330. A truly mature ram is just a different animal than a ewe or young ram.

A ram with 30 inch horns measured around the outside is a good trophy.

In the current Handloader has an article on the 338-06 AI the author states he shot one in NM that weighed 600 Ibs. I had thought 300, but this made me question that since I have never seen one, but would like to hunt them sometime.
Posted By: hanco Re: Aoudad Size - 03/09/23
We kill them on our lease around 250. A 600 lb would be huge. I’m inclined to believe 300 to 350 for a big one.

a 600 pound Aoudad should be lumped in with 8 foot rattlesnakes,1200 pound elk and 2500 pound cape buffalo.
Posted By: easttex Re: Aoudad Size - 03/10/23
I do not know who the idiot was that claimed a 600 lb. aoudad, but that is total BS. Mature rams do vary quite a bit, but most will be in the 275-310lb. range. 350 lb. certainly exist, but they are like 350 lb. mule deer.

A couple mature healthy rams. I doubt either was over 270lbs. I could be wrong.

My Dog won't eat Aoudad, and she's not a picky eater. Rio7

I'd think most would call B.S. on 600lbs.

350lb mule deer bucks are not that uncommon in Alberta, although there'll be fewer with CWD affecting mature mule deer bucks the most.

The last real big mule deer buck I shot, I tried to move it ungutted with the calf sled on the snow. With my gimpy leg, I could barely move that sucker.

I have. Tastes fine if you have a clue, from ewes to 30"ers. Tastes like meat. But then again i don't drive around for hours with it in a pickup bed on the way to the processor either.

Never shot any over corn either.

Never seen one that came close to 600lbs.

MIght not be the writer's error. Many times I have seen willful mistakes on the part of editors. There is a book out there with me listed at 6'8" because I looked too tall compared to others in a photo.

But there are plenty of poorly informed writers

This was a big ram, maybe 340...just a guess. Second biggest body I have had my hands on.

Epitome of a mature ram. 11+ years old. Probably looked like a bison standing there when you smoked him. Well done. Curious who you hunted with?

Are you sure he said Aoudad and not oryx? The Oryx/gemsbok in NM are in the 600lb range, but the only way an aoudad is getting to 600lbs is by putting it in a 10’ pen and force feeding it.
Posted By: Just a Hunter Re: Aoudad Size - 03/24/23
Editors have done things that change info at times from what I hear and read, but it does say Aoudad on page 62 top of middle column.
Posted By: JRHawaii Re: Aoudad Size - 03/26/23
Might have to go check one out in person.
