The 240 Weatherby is becoming my favorite antelope rifle and I have always been a fan of 30 cals. On the left is a 240 WBY with a 75 Barnes X and on the right is a 300 PRC.

Well, one of them is going to tear up a whole lot more than the other...

I had a brief affair with a 240 Wby a few years back. Bought a few boxes of the factory ammunition featuring the 80 grain TTSX. I only shot a couple whitetail does with it, but was left feeling less than overwhelmed. Sold the rifle and moved on. It is a very cool looking cartridge, though, and I am glad you like it.

Did they run a bunch or just not have a solid effect you were looking for?

7 STW for sheep, antelope and mule deer. 8 mag for elk if we get lucky in the draw.

30-06 for deer and elk. I got a doe antelope tag. That will require more gun - my 22-250. It weighs more than the '06 but it'll be much flatter ground.

I have a new to me Kimber BGR in 280, new to me 99 in 375 Win to try out. I’m gonna dig out a couple of Sako 264’s, make sure they are sighted in, hunt with them some.

Not sure but probably my Whelen.

Certainly the 1A 7x57 I recently acquired, probably the.25-06 AI I just took out of mothballs to play with. Maybe the .303 Savage. Depending on how things go regarding travel plans, draw hunts etc. .223, 6.5x55, .45-70 and .308. Also.44 mag and .41 mag revolvers may see some use.

T/C Compass in 308 Win. Just loaded 100 rounds for it and at the range got a .69 group at 100 yard. I figure that will work.

Probably my 6.5 Grendel, but really thinking about breaking our my old Swedish Mauser.

At the beginning of each hunting season, I usually look over my gun safe & select what I plan to hunt with. Over the course of a few years, I eventually get to hunt with them all. Mostly I hunt deer & hogs so I can't make a terrible selection since any centerfire rifle I currently have is capable of killing either. It's often a rifle's iron sights or scope setup that determines which one I bring to a favorite hunting location. If the rest of this year goes as planned, then I'll probably hunt with the following in this order:

For whitetails, it’ll be 120 gr. Ballistic Tips mostly in both my 6.5 Creedmoor and my 7mm-08. I may shoot a few 129 gr. Hornady Interlocks in the Creedmoor and maybe a few 139 gr. Interlocks in 7mm-08.

Probably my kp1 in 45-70. Maybe my 6 mm Rem!

Haven't you kept up with the times? The .308 is the new 30-30.....deer are immune to it. You need a hyper fast, ultra magnum earth blaster, or at least something with Creedmore in the name.

Whitetails will most likely be taken with 5.56mm & 77gr TMKs.
Not sure what to use for elk. Just pulled my scope off the 300WM for my son to use. Probably my 25-06 or my well worn 338.

Win m70 SG in 270win for deer here and in Alabama, and elk in November in NM. 130gr for deer and 150gr for elk. Easy Peasy.

Elk hunt this October will see me accompanied by my Sako 338. Deer at home, I’m getting an urge to not use my usual Jarrett 280 AI or pre 64 270. I’ll take a deer or two with my bow, while also hunting with my Delta Elite 10mm, T/C Hawken 50 or 54….just wanting to be out of the ordinary this fall.

Ill be back and forth between a pre64 FW in 270 in a McM, and the same in .308 wearing the original furniture. I have a Montana big game combo license and an any deer tag for Harding County west of the highway.

No big game tags this fall so it'll be a (Lilja) 1:8 22-250 Kimber Montana w/75gn A-max for varmints that show themselves while I'm bird hunting.

Deer and I'll be useing an 1885 Highwall in 35 Whelen

September will find me in Texas with a custom #1 300 H&H for the Gemsbuck and another custom on a Argentine Mauser 6.5X55 full Mannlicher stocked rifle.

We failed to draw on elk, many deer areas nearby have extensive CWD, didn’t even try for “goats” because of the winter kill off.

We have a freezer full of meat, if we hunt …..it will be elk on a General! Or, maybe to just get out in the country…..buy some bear tags! So….it will be be my usual old rifle or my handgun! memtb

Took an Oregon cow elk in January this year with my 30-06 Rem 700 CDL and the 178 grain Hornady ELD-X.

Hunted Idaho spring bear without filling a tag. Was working with a nicely built 7 PRC on a Bergara action. Also had the 45-70 Marlin along as well. Opposite ends of the spectrum right there. Had two bear tags, didn't take a shot. It was still a nice week in the Magruder Corridor.


Next up is Washington bear, opening soon. I'm thinking that the new-to me Winchester Model 70 in 7mm Rem Mag with handloaded 140 gr Barnes TTSX bullets will be the choice.


I've got an archery elk tag for Washington, may not have much time available for that hunt but a walk with the bow is always nice anyway. It's a Hoyt take-down recurve, 62" and 53# that I've had since the 1970's. Still enjoy shooting it.

And for Washington deer in October & November I may turn to the same 7mm magnum Winchester Model 70. Maybe. Nice to have options.

For deer and if I draw a Montana antelope, I'll use my .257 Ackley with 117 gr Sierra GmeKing bullets.

For elk I'll use my .300 Wby Vanguard shooting 180 gr TTSX bullets, or my 7mm RM with 160 gr Accubonds.

And for an Alberta moose in September it will be my .300 Wby Vanguard shooting 180 gr TTSX bullets.

6mm creedmoor. 105bthp chronographed at around 3020ish fps. Have a fantastic bull elk tag, cow tag, antelope, and deer. Might spend most the season looking for the right bull.

Will definitely kill two elk, we'll see if I get to the others.

.222 and .223 with a smorgasbord of different bullets for Texas hogs. .30-06 and 180 gr Hornady for Nilgai, elk, or whatever big meaty thing I can get in my sights.

These .308s will get the nod this year for deer and Texas pigs. And one of them will go to Namibia in April. Working with the 150g Hornady CX at the moment for that trip. But may switch it to a 165 partition.

Matthews switchback in Sept for moose, then moving to my .45-70 shiloh sharps or Sako .338 carbine; either of my xp-100’s or Sako 7mm Rem Mag for antelope. Then sako AII 308 carbine for whitetail. If im hunting elk, I’ll tote the Sako .338. My son will use his sako .243 for deer/ antelope and his Sako .338 for elk.

Odds are good that we will blood a Sako.

Switchback is the best compound bow every made in my opinion. I bought one in 2007. An xl model. That sucker shot so smooth.

No elk tag, drew an any deer east river unit along Oahe reservoir. Drew an any whitetail plus antlerless whitetail tag in eastern Meade co.and waiting for the antelope draw. If I draw antelope will use a 6 C or a 6 rem. 25 to 35 on the deer...mb

It's not so much that they are immune to it, but that the .308 will drop and land short of the animal at any distance beyond 100 yards, striking dirt.

That's great to hear. I know I wouldn't mind another one of them at the right price.

Scotty - I've got a blistering fast 140 grain Barnes TTSX load worked up... It's nearly 3,300 fps... That 26" barrel brings out a lot of good from the ol' 7mm Rem Mag cartridge!

Drew an antelope tag so I guess I’ll take my 25-06. Probably a m7 7/08 for local white tails and a 30 herett 14” contender for a meat doe.

Benelli R1, with 2 barrels, a .30-06 and a .300 Win Mag, so I hunt pretty much what ever I need for meat.

I have to work up a load from my Brownell 7 Rem and was thinking of giving them a try. May need to pick your brain on your load. I'd like to use it for elk this year.

I just finished cooking a new load for the 7mm-08. I'm now getting north of 2900 fps with 139 Hornady SPs and StaBall 6.5. My TC Compass was already on the shortlist for this fall, but shooting 200 fps faster than the previous load puts it at the top.

At the other end of the spectrum, I'm taking the Brown Bess out again this year. I'm now shooting .735 ball over 80 grains of 3F.

Why would you want to? Just curious.

I have a bear tag, one any antelope, three whitetail tags, one general deer tag and one general elk tag and two cow permits.

Whitetail deer plan on using my Rem 700 CDL 35 Whelen with the Furry 220gr bullet, Rem 700 BBL 270 win using the Hornady 145 ELDX and a new Tikka T3X stainless fluted 6.5x55 with the Hornady 140 gr SST.

It was more happy happenstance than anything else. I had heard good things about StaBall 6.5 and my first attempt with it got me near MAX velocity. I knocked down the load a full grain and got 2840 and then tweaked it back up and got great accuracy at 2930. That's still about 100 fps below the stated MAX.

Same as last year .... FN-98 faux Rigby Stalker in 275Rigby.

Faux TI in 257Roberts. I like faux rifles.

If I decide to buy a whitetail buck tag it'll be the single-shot Traditions G3 in .35 Whelen using the bear load (sighted), 225gr AB at 2840 fps. Same for wolf to the end of this year. Yet, I'd prefer to use the 180gr TTSX in .35 for both deer and wolf. Have a load at 2875 fps but would need to load some up and resight the .35 - time is a factor.

Went and double checked my .338 WM and .300 WM this morning and will be chasing moose only this fall. Oldest son’s TDY that was for the entire moose season got canceled so, chasing moose it is.

Two new to me Kimbers, Montana in 300WSM and Hunter in .257 Robert's. If I get a couple in the freezer, I'll break out one or two of my wheel guns. Want to get one w8th the 25-5 45LC I picked up recently, not sure who owned it before me, but it must have been worked over by a good smith, it's extremely smooth. .62 Jaeger for late season.

The only tag this year is a Coues whitetail here in Arizona. Will be carrying the Winchester Super Grade chambered in 6.5WSM. I have loads for the 124 Hammer Hunter, 130 Scirocco and 130 Accubond, but will try some loadwork with the 142 LRAB once the summer temps decline.

Starting out with a Ruger Old Army blackpowder cap-n-ball for Kansas early season. If I don't see any bucks worth shootin' in September, I'll switch it up to a centerfire revolver of some type in late season.

I bought a late 1980's Savage Package gun that is in nearly new condition. The scope is junk, so if I get it switched out I will use it for elk hunting season. Looking at the bolt face, this doesn't look like the rifle was ever fired and the rifling is sharp! Got it cheap in a local pawn shop. If I don't get this thing squared away I'll use my Ruger American rifle in 6.5 Creedmor. Nothing fancy, but they'll get the job done!

I did a scope check the other day. Ready to go.

I just finished load development for my .375 AI, which I will use again this and every year. The load is with Barnes 270 grain LRX’s a bit over 3000 mv @ 90+ F temps. Likely a bit slower at fall hunting temps!

Here is a photo of a test target…..2 groups fired, 2 days apart, with one grain difference in powder charges. The group outlined in red went 1/2” center to center…. and only had 3 fps velocity difference high to low velocities! The group “might” have been a tiny bit smaller, but I didn’t allow any cooldown between shots…..shot them as fast as I could record the velocities and set-up for the next shot!

So, once zero’d……..”I think that this dog will hunt”! memtb

The old 35 Whelen for bear and likely deer. 250’s for all at an easy 2550. I might take out my Uncle’s 700 in 270 if I get the stock finished just for nostalgia sake.

I will be using a Sarrels Blueridge longbow 52# @28 shooting 350 spine Victory VForce arrows with 250gr up front. This will be for archery deer/antelope/elk.

For rifles it will be:

Rem LVSF in 22-250 1:8 shooting 77gr Scenars for antelope/deer.
Model 70 in 270 WCF 1:8 shooting 155gr Barnes LRX for antelope/deer/elk

Have a South Carolina deer hunt coming up in September. Planning on using the Savage Mod. 10 in 300 WSM because it has never filled a tag on whitetail deer. It has taken mule deer, antelope, and a hog. But never a whitetail. Gotta do something about that. For around here the plans are for the CVA Scout in 444 Marlin that I got back in February for hunting in areas where I usually use a 30-30. Only stuff it has ever shot so far has been paper. When not in a rifle zone it's back to the old standby; the 12 ga. Remington 870 "Special Purpose Deer" with fully rifled Remington barrel. Will also be out doing the inline muzzle loader thing in season this year for the first time with a 50 cal, CVA Accura. One nice thing about retirement is the almost unlimited amount of hunting time available.

2 different states.
TC Hawkin for all muzzleloader hunts unless nasty rainy day then CVA 35 Remington single shot.
Old Marlin 336 SC 35 Reminton with peep sight primarily and Tikka T3 re barreled and chambered in 35 Remington for some hunts where optic is needed.
Same old 2009 model Elite Z28 for bowhunts. It has put a lot of meat on the ground and my best bucks.

The .50 cal seems to do better with bullets, more accurate and more power than ball loads.

I was fortunate to get mine done years ago before the conversion got so expensive, now Dave is no longer doing that work.

Nice rifles. I live and hunt mainly in shotgunland. Here's some of my slug throwers. I won't hunt with the Benelli but I'll be taking them all the range soon to check zeros and have some fun.

I pulled a coveted high-desert mule deer tag I love to hunt this year so I’m pumped. I built a rifle several years ago for “next time I pull a XXX tag” and it’s what I’ll very likely be using… it’s a midweight 6.5 SAUM directly cloned from the GA Precision (GAP) Extreme Hunter. Manners SL stock, Bartlien fluted barrel, Timney Calvin trigger, M700 action with a PTG bolt and Gre-Tan bolt guts. And AICS bottom metal and mags.

Dark horse candidate is a 7 SAUM factory donor i rechambered to 7 WSM and damned if it doesn’t shoot lights-out. However it’s been really hot this summer and I haven’t had a chance to shoot it much.

There’s always the Kimber Montana 7 WSM which I can hunt anything anywhere with. I used it 2/3 of the other years I pulled this tag. It works great there; it’s a backpack hunt. It has lots of longer-range hunting opportunities so I’m leaning towards the 6.5 GAP; not so much for the extra reach or ballistic advantage-there isn’t one- but just because as a heavier rifle it’s easier to shoot very well.

6.5x284 NORMA for sheep, caribou and possibly black bear if I stumble into one. Got a griz with it the other day.

.300 H&H for moose and another griz/brown bear if opportunity allows since I will be moose hunting in a 2 brown bear unit. Possibly my .375 H&H but I am not planning on it. If I can get a Sitka deer trip organized I will likely take the .300 H&H for them too.

For elk and mule deer in Idaho and deer in Montana it’ll be my old .270 Win, 2nd year production Win 70.

I have 6 deer rifles. 2-308's, 2 - 30-30's, a 243 and a 30-06. The 30-30's are lever guns and all the rest are bolt actions. I only live about 15 minutes from our camp so I try to get out at least once with each of them.

A few weeks back, took crop damage deer with the 308 Win, 338 RUM and 375 H&H Mag.
This fall I'm thinking of using my 280 AI and 35 Whelen for WT deer.
My wife will use her 30 Nosler.

I keep telling myself I will give one of my other rifles a chance. When I go the safe it always seems to be my Winchester 70 Classic SS 270 WSM that gets the call. It shoots 140 Accubonds and 130 Trophy Copper equally well and has worked near and far.

has been a change of plans i finally found a new to me Winchester model 70 3006 ,S.S. , custom fiber stock and custom trigger too. so i will put Picatinny mnts and 5.5-22x56 Nightforce scope my handloads also. will hunt with this rifle for deer , maybe bear , i need to get use to this rifle for my next May 2024 Africa hunting trip .

My granddaughter will be hunting with my early 70s 700 that started life as a 25-06. It’s now a 6.5-06 and with my schedule odds are I won’t get to hunt this year.

Couple days ago I was hot to trot to go moose hunting. Got ranger pulled out, trailer cleaned off, then I got to thinking ph uck that moose hunting over rated wake freezing your ass off in a tent no thanks. So I didn’t bother going lol. But I was planning on taking a 300 win mag I just got.

May as well just donate your firearms to someone that hunts.

This year and every year. I use my Steyr Scout in .308 for pig and my Blaser R93 in .257 Wby magnum for deer.

Old reliable. I like to call her, " Synthetic Magic" Savage 110 Apex Hunter in .260 remington. IMO, the perfect rifle. Kentucky whitetails don't like her too much.

Will take the lefty Browning stainless .270 to Montana again for deer and antelope. I have many other rifles but always reach for old faithful. It just seems right.

I had a 240 WBY built on a Win 70, a really great combo, sold it to a fine gent here on the Campfire. Can't imagine a better antelope cartridge, works pretty well on deer too!

Arizona bull elk, in New Mexico I'm hunting mule deer, javelina and sandhill crane.

Encore with a .460 S&W Mag barrel for deer out behind the barn in southern Michigan. If I get up to M 134 in the UP during deer season I'll take something flatter shooting. Probably Ruger #1 7 x 57 or Encore with 6.5 Creedmoor barrel.

Model 70 of some variety most likely. Unless something else winks at me when I open the safe.

Took the Kimber 6.5 out for a stroll yesterday but didn’t find any hogs. Saw several deer.

Looking forward to the first use of my 8" twist .270 WSM (M70 Stainless action) with the 175 TGK for MT General Deer. For MT Antelope, either that 270 WSM or my CZ 527 6.5 Grendel which is a recent acquisition and also not yet hunted.
Didn't draw a thing for my native AZ but might by and OTC Whitetail B Tag in MT and try to get one with my 1948 peep-sighted M99 300 Savage.

Started today. A couple of 45 cal muzzleloaders.

Well, I had to scratch one of the rifles from the line-up this past weekend. I had the Whelenizer out for what should have been a routine check of function and final sight-in. However, it was throwing 180 grainers all over the place, and the measured velocities were well under their target.

This is a project that got sidelined when I got the Cancer. It's been languishing for 3 years now. I've got way too much on my plate to get it ironed out before November, so back onto the rack it goes.

. . . and out comes the Mauser From Hell. 8mmX57, 175 grain RNs . I think I used this last about 2020. I'll just keep it as a safety blanket. I've got 2 other rifles that need blooded with their new loads.

Gets the job done

Last deer season here in Louisiana I decided to hunt with only 35caliber and larger rifles. Things went rather poorly so I'll "make it all better" by hunting with only 30 calibers and smaller this year.(Except in primitive weapons seasons I'll hunt with a CVA Scout in either 35Remington or 35Whelen.) I'll be toting anything from a mannlicher stocked No1 in 257Roberts to a 308MX in 308Marlin Express to a Ruger M77 LH in 30/06 and several more between. Having choices is a wonderful thing!

A 708, I've fallin in love with that round. Been shooting a model 7 ss/syn in it but recently ran a cross a clean bergara ridge rifle in one, was looking for something threaded since I jumped on the suppressor band wagon. Plan on getting it setup next week.
