I’ve caught bunches of pigs, mostly in central Texas. I’ve always worn rubber boots, used scent killer on my hands and boots. I had no trouble catching the bastards with plain corn, but that hasn’t worked so well in East Texas. Any ideas on a bait to use? I don’t want any kind of motor oil or diesel, because I use the same pens for deer. Something sweet to help cover my scent??? Any ideas??

Strawberry jello with corn

Best natural is acorns
Hickory nuts
Persimmons
Honeysuckle

Never pen trapped
Neighbor did with diesel corn
to exclude deer
Did pretty good- 25 smogs personal best

What about sweetfeed or cheap dogfood?

I use the jello method here.

I do the same. Fill 5 gall bucket 1/2 full corn, fill to brim with water, cover and leave a week.

Dunno about your ferals, but when my kids raised 4H JML hogs, cat food was like crack to a pig. Easy to get them to go wherever they needed to be.

I've used the Jello and soured corn. I have also had really good luck with sweet potatoes. I cut a few in half and throw in the trap with regular corn. They smell them and go after them.

here any of the koolaide /jellow/sweet base stuff the deer will beat hogs to the trap . old sweet pastrys like honny buns and things like that work better

I caught a big Russian boar several years ago with strawberry Jello and corn mixed. He would not go in an open trap with just sour corn. My camera showed him going to the door but he wouldn't go in. I put the Jello mix in the trap and left the door closed. The door was held shut by screen door type springs. That night he pushed the door open and trapped himself.

Sour corn that’s been soaked in a bucket for about a week. Nasty smelling stuff.

The deer eat it also.

Corn soaked in cheap strawberry soda is the ticket.

I've been told what works for baiting Bears will also work on pigs though we don't have pigs up here - yet.

Fermented corn is pretty effective which seems to differ from sour corn by the addition of 3-5 pounds of sugar to the corn/water mix. I fill a black 5 gallon bucket with corn to about 2" from the top. I'll add sugar to this then fill with water until the corn is covered. Stir well to mix in the sugar then top off with water and seal with tight fitting lid, preferably black also. Then let sit in an area that the sun can hit it for as long as possible each day. That gets the fermentation process working well. The amount of sugar used is determined by the length of time it is left in the sun and temperature. For at least 4 weeks and temps over 80 degrees 3 pounds will do. Shorter times and lower temps require more sugar.

A side benefit if hunting over this as bait is watching the smaller critters getting drunk. I've seen them falling down drunk and the best are those that become "mean drunks" and try fighting anything else that comes in. Like heavily intoxicated humans, their antics are mostly unsuccessful and often painful.

Powdered jello packets are also commonly used. Anything berry as well as chocolate and vanilla are attractive to bears. I'll empty and scatter the contents over popcorn to add bulk to the jello. For bears I'll open two sides of the packet and through it up into the trees to get greater scent dispersion. Flavors suck as lemon, lime, and butterscotch have been more effective as deterrents for me.

Where's LBP when you need him?

Five gallon bucket mix in strawberry or cherry Jell-O and corn. Broadcast in the pen after it has solidified. Your pigs will love you!

Where I hunt, traffic and commotion seems to affect the hogs more than the bait.

I typically just use apple scented or persimmon scented corn, maybe a little protein/sweet feed.

A packet or two of yeast with the strawberry soda/jello/corn mix adds to the fermentation process and it don't seem to hurt.

ya!

A friend does well with pouring used oil out of his fish fryers on corn.

I use Anise Oil all around my Bear Baits, which helps bring them in, should work for Pigs as well. I dilute it in water and stray it everywhere around my bait station.

It's the Licorice aroma~!
wet sour corn with powdered grape kool aid

Just ask her out for dinner and drinks, she’s gonna put out. Trust me on this one!! 😉

Oh Sheit this thread is about pigs. In that case I just feed corn and they seem to like it fine.
