I have been trying factory loads in a 308 I recently aquired. Its going to be awhile before I start reloading for the caliber, and was wondering about the Nitrex 165 grain ammo. I have tried Corelok 180 grAIN, federal fusion and hornady in 165 grain. The 180 grain remington shot the best, the Federal wasnt bad, but wasnt great, and I would really like to find a 165 grain factory hunting load. I recently saw the Speer advertised, was wondering how they are. Any opinions would be appreciated.
It was accurate in my 7mm-08, but that's about all I can report. Oh... it chrono'd nicely, too.
I used to be able to buy the speer nitrex jsp 165 gr for my 30-06 locally. I kind of liked the brass & I found myself using the little cigarette style boxes for many years after they stopped selling them around here. The boxes were sure handy, shirt pocket size.

They shot very well in my M70 fwt & performed as expected on MN white tail deer.
I have used the Speer Nitrex in both my .270 WIN (130) and my .30-06 SPRG (165) with complete satisfaction (it's loaded with the Speer Grand Slam bullet). I haven't seen any in quite awhile, unsure as to when it was discontinued, but if you can buy some that is on the shelf somewhere it will work just fine.
cpl cleg,

I have used it in my .308 and .375. The .308 ammo was the 180 gr GS version, and it shoots well from my rifle (all 180 gr loads do though from my Steyr Scout).

I bought some of the Speer Nitrex ammo in .270 several years ago. It's topped with the 130 gr. GS, & is the most accurate load I have ever used in my Ruger 77. I've tried Federal ammo with the same bullet, H4831 handloads with the same bullet, etc.; & nothing shoots as well as the Nitrex load. I wish I could locate some on a back shelf someplace.
Used the .300 Weatherby 180gr Nitrex and it was very accurate...I did find some on a back shelf in a remote gun shop last year think it was .270 and bought it for a member here and shipped it to him.
BTW it is discontinued...

I started realizing that when this thread became a nostalgia post.
At cabelas, they have a factory ammo, "speergrand slam"- After a few google attempts I came up with Nitrex- I just assumed they were the same, realize now they are not.
Anyway, if anyone is interested in grand slam bullet factory loads, go to Cabelas-I can remember the manufacturer.
I'm no expert, but that sounds like it would be a fine all around factory load for the .308 as long as it shot straight (assuming you're talking Grand Slam bullets). I've only tried the Nitrex loads once - 100gr Grand Slams for my .243. It was BY FAR the most accurate load ever shot through that rifle - factory or hand-rolled.
