I've been shooting factory hornady 165gr. btsp @2800fps
for several years with various bolt actions, most currently
my standard savage 111.
Has always shot consistently well with 1" or better groups @100yds, but I need to reach out to 200-400 yds ranges to see how the groups react for longer range hunting.
Anyone been using this exact round at longer ranges that can
comment on how well the groups stay together?
Aceman.
Mr. aceman;
Weve loaded that bullet at about 2600fps in a .308 carbine, about 2800fps in a short 06 and about 3150fps in a couple .308 Normas and a .300WinMag.
While we didn't shoot many groups at longer ranges, it was used to dispatch a few coyotes at longer ranges and it shot minute of coyote anyway. I recall one whitetail spike we thought wed hit earlier that was hit at a fair distance as well, and judging from the tissue damage the bullet must have opened up adequately at that range.
Hopefully that was of some use to you.
Regards,
Dwayne
I was just at the rifle range with a 22" 30-06 with 1-4X scope.
I chronographed these at 2886 fps.
There was a light breeze and I was getting 3 shots in five inches at 300 yds.
I think with a bigger scope they would group tighter but I never shoot longer range when hunting.

Sounds crazy, but alot of times groups are better past 100yd. I guess it has to stabilize. That 165 will bang flop whitetails at 400. If you've got a good rest, put one thru the collar bone (grins) and get your knife.

Like BC30Cal I too have used this bullet for several cratridges. It's one of my "go to" bullets. This is my bullet of choice for long range deer in my .300 Win Mag. I load it to a little over 3200 fps and all are one shot kills. I've even taken Elk with it...shot a huge Cow once at about 80 yards, recovered the bullet inside the offside hide, perfect mushroom after going through her!
My opinion is that the 165 grainer for the .30 cal is one of the best all around weights going. I have 400 Hornady 165 BTSP's on hand as well as 500 Nosler Partition 165's for my future hunting......
Load em up and shoot em!

Used them for years in a Ruger M77 but used them in the "factory" hornady light magnum loadings and on smallish Southeastern whitetails. The rounds never failed me and 95% of the time it was a simple bang/flop result. I do remember one deer running about 40 yards before giving up the ghost but that didn't much matter b/c it left a blood trail like someone was pouring red paint from a gallon pale.
My opinion is that the 165 grainer for the .30 cal is one of the best all around weights going.
AMEN!
That is the absolute best way to answer the question you're asking; good luck!
A hunting pard of mine uses Hornady 165 BTSP's and 57 gr of IMR4350 on both deer and moose. He's killed lots with it from a 760 Remington pump. Everything he shoots dies pretty much on the spot.
He thinks the thing is a death ray. I load his bullets for him. They're accurate, and expand and penetrate - a marriage made in heaven. He's never shot anything past 200 yards, though. I have, and they worked so good, I started loading 180 Horady BTSP's. Dropped a moose at 250 yards with that combo. Bullet recovered after penetrating both shoulders weighed 154 grains (180 at start) and measured 0.604".
i have loaded that bullet in my dads 100th anniversary cdl. we shot it out to 500yrds and it held its own shooting moa or slightly under.
i used H4350 and it was running at 2850fps.
