There is some in the MT Taylor area but are very spotty.
Have hunted them several times, but have yet to find them. I know where they are not. I did have a chopper pilot that I got to know, that was doing elk surveys last winter, said he seen about 30 of them, when the snow was very deep. He told me that he would take me to them, but it obviously never worked out. So whether he was FOS or not, I really dont have any idea. I did find the audads very often. I got into those nearly every time that we went.

I have seen them once (3) on the far East side but they were not huntable, the Barbary have been pretty evasive also.
I have found the sheep every time I have been hunting the tahr, and my wife killed a 30 inch audad 2 years ago. I wish I could change my luck, and find the tahr instead of the sheep. I have killed a train load of sheep, but have never seen the tahr.

didnt know there were tahr in NM.....

how rough of country are the aoudads in? look like an interesting critter but i cant do to much climbing due to my [bleep] up knees.....realize monsters are prolly in remote country but say a guy is just looking for an average ram?

Toby, got your email and forwarded it to Steve. MTG
There is some horrible rough crap on that side of MT Taylor. I wouldnt take the chance.

A good barbary 28"+, is something I really want to kill. The only time I saw the Tahr they were on the land grant.
When I went to Afghanistan I was kinda hoping to go way up north to see the tahr and Marco Polo sheep.

Instead I went way down south to Helmand and Kandahar.

I would love to be able to afford to hunt the Asian exotics while still healthy.

I had to go to New Zealand to find mine...They are a really cool critter!

They are pretty neat animals, how was the meat?
Where can i find out more details about this? Are they considered exotics so they have a year round season? Someone please pm me with more info

I thought it was a lot like deer meat....damn good.
Is that those damn things that run everywhere they go? I watched a hunting show and the were hunting an animal similar to that but it may have been larger.

The damn things didn't walk, but ran everywhere they went. The hunters would get up on them and they would just take off for the next zip code for no reason.

Awesome animal, thanks for sharing.
Yes, they are considered an exotic. They escaped out of a high fence there in Mt. Taylor. (Water Canyon). The Lagunas own the fence now. All you have to hunt them is a small game liscence, or any big game liscence for NM. Like I said, I have hunted them all over that mt, and have yet to see them. Have heard of many being seen, and several being killed. But have yet to lay eyes on them.

Nice one!

JM,
You will find "Thar" also spelled "Tahr". Depends on the writer but both seem to be accepted.
