Im a Texan who wants to hunt moose in Maine. Are there any really good Maine moose guides you would recommend?

Agreed. IF you draw a tag then you'll know which unit or WMD your tag is valid for. You'll have to find a guide that hunts that unit.

When you apply for the drawing, do you specify which unit?

If you draw the tag, I've been applying for years, you'll get a small pile of mail from outfitters/guides, then the research begins.

Yes, but there are 29 units and you can make ten choices. There's also a box you can check that says you'll take a tag in any unit.

I've applied every year for at least the last 15 years. Haven't drawn a tag yet.

Maine now has outfitter tags and those hunts are expensive.

Also I believe Maine lets you trade tags if you draw. With another willing person with a tag, you can trade a cow for a bull tag (or the reverse) and trade to a different unit. All done of course through Fish and Game Dept.

Also, as I mentioned, there are now lodging tags that are allocated. Guides that get them can sell a hunt. Last I knew, the average hunt was well over $12,000.

Hunted Maine moose this past fall, after 20+ years of throwing my name in the hat. There were 2 other parties hunting out of the lodge we used, one of which drew a tag the 1st year they applied, the other, the 2nd year they applied.
Further, the rules are gradually changing with the net effect of making it tougher for non residents to draw a tag.
The moose herd in Maine is having problems as well.
I'm afraid that the best days of hunting Moose in Maine are behind us, though those willing to spend $12-15k will likely have good hunts for a few more years. They still have some smashers in the Big Woods.

Agree with the guys who recommend getting drawn before worrying about an outfitter.
I got mailers from lodges located over a 100 miles away from the zone I drew. This means 1 of 3 things.
1. A long commute every morning should you desire staying in their lodge.
2. Hunting out of a spike camp
3. they subcontract you out to a "local" lodge.
Further, be highly skeptical of trading tags. It's gonna be pretty hard to trade up. It's illegal to put money on the table to sweeten the deal.
Virtually every zone has some really good guides living in them. In our digital world, it is not hard to find them and vet them.

I know a number of people who "traded up" and to this day it still shocks me. In nearly every case, it was with people who had very limited time to hunt, or something in their lives changed, and wanted a tag closer to their home. I wouldn't count of being able to trade up but it happens more than most think.

We harvest mature bulls out of remote tent camps year after year, no matter what zone, season, or weather patterns. Consistent success... even on years like last Fall when lots of guides went home empty handed(including a surprisingly large amount of the lodge tag holders) we find mature bulls when others don’t. We don’t road hunt. All of our guides are experienced callers and have experience quartering and caping moose. Its mind blowing how many guides in Maine have little experience quartering moose and even rarer to find guides in Maine that can cape a moose off the skull in the field. You’d think this would be a requirement to hold a guides license, but you will find few guides with that knowledge. Some things to consider selecting a guide if drawn or purchasing an auction permit. For what its worth, I have a first year applicant nonresident Hunter almost every season. Gotta get in it to win it. Lots of first time applicants with now bonus points have been drawn. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, I’ve had 36 year applicants in the same camp as first year... its a tough draw, but apply every year and it will happen.

GOOD LUCK AT DRAWING A TAG. I GAVE UP AFTER NOT DRAWING OVER 12 YEARS WITH MULTIPLE ENTRIES. ALSO THE HERD IS SUFFERING FROM BRAINWORM AND WINTER TICKS. THERE ARE OTHER PLACES TO HUNT MOOSE WHERE YOU CAN JUST BUY A TAG.
