If I apply for Region B General tag for deer for $677.00 am I assured that I'll draw that tag even with no preference points? It seems that way from the website. I just want to make sure I don't screw myself by not having a tag this year because my son is putting in for pronghorn in unit 9 with two pp's. I already have four pronghorn so what I'd really like is a Mulie. But if I can't be guaranteed a tag I'll just do pronghorn because I have two pp's.

I would say yes based on looking at the stats on the Hunter Planner page. It looks like you have a pretty good chance to draw even in the regular draw but in looking at the special draw you should be good to go. Its only showing the 2019 draw odds but if you look at it it doesn't look like there where any 1st choice applicants in the special.

Looks like you could save a few hundred dollars by applying in the regular draw. The quota was 346 and there were 301 applicants in 2019. So last year you would have drawn the tag without any points. But of course there's a chance there will be more applicants this year so you wouldn't be guaranteed to draw. In the special draw you could draw as a second choice if you want, if you're interested in buying a deer point this year to help in drawing a Wyoming deer tag in the future.

Thanks. I've been buying antelope points instead of deer points. Stupid me. Now comes the time to use them and I'd much rather have a mule deer than another antelope. I am surprised though. I didn't think you could draw mule deer without points.
Check the draw odds and find out

Yeah, because obviously I haven't tried that. Lol.

Region B isn't a very popular area due to the lack of public land. That's why it's possible to draw it without any points.

Never say never when it comes to looking at previous year's draw odds, especially in WY these days. Odds can go from 100% 3rd choice one year, to less than 100% first choice the next.

That said, region B isn't too popular simply due to the lack of public land as bdan68 said. There is enough though especially in units 8 and 10, and plenty of accessible checkerboard sections in other units. I am unsure of the quality of deer in that area, but couldn't imagine there isn't some good bucks running around somewhere over there.

I know. I applied for unit 7 antelope last year which the year before had been an 87% draw with no pp's . So I applied without my pp and failed to draw. It turns out it fell below 50% draw this past year.

Just have to remember, unit 10 is a limited quota unit, and therefore you cannot hunt it with the general region B license.

I saw that. Same goes for 22.

If I remember right the deer and antelope drawings are on the same day. That sucks because I'd like to apply for mule deer and if unsuccessful still have time to put in for pronghorn.

That's a good point. I didn't look that unit up before posting, and could see how my post as is would be very misleading.

I’d roll the dice on the regular draw. Use the difference to pay for gas for the trip
