I am looking for photos of cape buffalo with their width. I am trying to determine what a under 40" cape buffalo looks like.
Thanks,
Charles
39"
Thanks ingwe! That would be great.
I don't normally measure my animals, but I'm sure this one is under 40". To me age and character are more important than width. The old warriors may have been well over 40" when younger, but have worn off the excess in their "golden years".

Now THAT is a great old warrior bull!
I'd turn down the above 44" guy for the older bull with character.

Thanks guys! I am looking for age, character, and worn tips. Deep curls would be a plus.

I'm off to the Eastern Cape oF SA next month and I would be VERY pleased with this Buffalo.
Very nice indeed!

Well although I never measured him this old fellow was well under 40 but when I saw him width never entered my mind at all...
Don't forget the Boss!!
Now that is what I am talking about.
Well although I never measured him this old fellow was well under 40 but when I saw him width never entered my mind at all...
Don't forget the Boss!!
He has it all...old and worn down with enormous bosses.
This bull is only about 37", but has the old bull character.
The bull below is is wider, but too young, based on the incomplete bosses.
This bull is only about 37", but has the old bull character.
I would prefer 37" over immature. Thanks!
Pretty typical Selous bull. Seems like they are all around 39. You get the wider ones up in Masailand.
Like others have said, character counts for more than width. If I get a chance to go back I will be looking for a scrum cap.
No clue on the width. Never asked befor or after. Old solid dugga boy. Bosses worn down nearly smooth.
Never measured this one. Definitely under 40".
Here is a big boy from Ngorongoro.
Charles: If you are going to hunt buffalo, good on you. Im with the character means more than width crowd, but whatever floats your boat.
Bear in mind this experience is like no other, and you need to drink it in, enjoy it. You hunt buffalo for the privilege of having hunted buffalo. A cow can kill you just as dead as a bull, and a small bull can kill you just as dead as a big bull.
The 'trophy' if there is any, is in the experience.
More is the power to you if the experience is a humbling one. It should be, when one is hunting such a grand beast.

I could not possibly agree more sir...
Well said!

Thanks ingwe. I hope to hunt buffalo next July. I have saved up, I am working to get in buffalo hunting shape, and I am hoping to fly on air miles to avoid spending my budget on air fares.
Now if my aging body will hold up and no joints failures before then.
I did a TON of walking right before my hunt. Glad i did....
it will depend on where you are hunting, some hunts can be short, others, not so much. I killed my bull in the last 20 minutes of the last day of a 14 day hunt. We worked for him.
Some days we logged 15 miles, others very little, depending on the tracks we were following.
And don't forget to keep shooting until he stops moving! Buff are tough critters and about 10 times bigger than a whitetail so be ready to follow up with a 2nd, 3rd or more shots.
It will be one of the greatest experiences of your life.
Charles, do you know where and with whom you will hunt yet?

Like this??
Well under 40"
Here's one under 40". Never measured and probably never will. He's my trophy regardless of size. Wouldn't trade him for anything.
I was more interested in the hunt than size, and I got what I went for.

Beautiful buff, gentlemen. I'm quite jealous. I'll just have to live vicariously through you all for (hopefully only) a few more years until I get over for one.
Paladin, is that a rail under your barrels there between the fore end and front swivel??
Good eye FF. It's a GoPro mount.
Some beautiful buffalo gents!
BTW Fjold had one of his mounted in the best mount Ive ever seen...post a pic please Fjold!
This one is from Mozambique, under 40" but I haven't measured him.
The hunt started early morning and as you can see from the light we finally got a shot late in the afternoon. The trophy is the memory of the hunt.
Charles, do you know where and with whom you will hunt yet?
I plan to hunt with Pieter Kriel in South Africa.

He has everything that I am looking for.
Thanks everyone. This is great. I had no reference on judging cape buffalo and was getting the idea that I needed something over 40". The great trophies that ya'll have shared shows how wrong I was.
I've seen it! He TURBO SUCKS!

WOW!
What's the caliber of the double rifle?
I'll chime in for the good Doctor since I've spooged over that rifle at his place. It's a Jeffrey in 450-400 3"..
Now, dats CLASSY!
Why thank you, your excellency!
I'll chime in for the good Doctor since I've spooged over that rifle at his place. It's a Jeffery's in 450-400 3"..
That one was taken with 400 grain Hawk SP over 60 grains of IMR 3031. I like Woodleighs, but had a shortage of them before this hunt. I thought I had 2 boxes of 50 and it turns out only had solids. Woodleighs were on backorder from everywhere. Hawk fixed me up with .050 jacketed SPs and they worked well.
I loved Tanzania, and wish I could go every year. Ruark and Selby hunted that area. Classic East Africa

Haha, yeah. I wanted a buffalo with a nice boss, and boy did I get him!
Rates a TWO-COOL!
I think we need to cross bread the DNA from these two and Jurassic Buffalo to hunt. Need volunteers to capture the cows and milk the bulls for samples. Ingwe??? FOst???
Free beer......

I will only do it if someone is backing me with a rusty assed Taurus .38 special...
How about a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag?
Nope. I found I am invincible against dangerous game if I have a rusty assed Taurus .38 in hand.
Nope.
I found I am invincible against dangerous game if I have a rusty assed Taurus .38 in hand. You are,but what about me?
I would rather have a little more in my hand, preferably something in the .375 H&H class.
Well...as I found out with the .38...." If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you are with..."
Well...as I found out with the .38...." If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you are with..."
Yup.
Isn't .38 caliber bigger than .375 caliber? I mean, do the math....
Yes sir!
That ol bugger has it all!

A .38 Special is .357 and a .375 is .375....
Irony almost always goes over the head of SOMEBODY on the Campfire, unless of course there's a smiley icon at the end of the post.
How did we ever communicate in writing before emoticons?
You gotta give elks a little leeway, he shoots a .270 and had a sign on the curb growing up " Slow Children Playing..."
Note; emoticon.
Well, the .270 explains a little--though as I have noted in the past, a .277 bullet is actually much closer to 7mm diameter than so-called 7mm bullets.
My big trouble isnone of my magazine (or book) editors allow the use of emoticons, so I'm somewhat emoticon-impaired.
I thought you were your book editor now...
Institute changes!
Wouldn't a hunting book with emoticons be just super?
Note: emoticon.

Ingwe made a funny.
I noticed the irony, but, suffer from a mild concussion so it went way over my head.
Tom,
Eileen is my book editor. I am just a lowly "content provider," we're known in the amazing world of the Internet.
It sure would be a lot easier if my editors allowed emoticons. For an article on Cape buffalo hunting I could just type OMG!, followed by several emoticons indicating how the hunt felt.
elkhunter,
.270's will give you mild concussions. I have experienced many of them over the years.

Gotcha,thanks for the heads up.

Exactamundo! I was just watching Bubbavision and the intrepid hunter wounded a buffalo. PH made him sit it out while he went in the thick stuff and did the wet work.
I'll bet that dude is glad they got his humiliation on film....he looked like he needed a smiley face.
WOW! Talk about you owing him money! Looks like he has a third eye on his left shoulder.
Fantastic!!
Some beautiful bulls here. Don't care too much about the length of the horns. I have always wanted to hunt one of the scrum cap buffalo bulls. Maybe next year!
Back in the day, before the internet, people were forced to actually write!
I wonder where Elmer Keith would have gone if he had emoticons?

Yes, I'd be armed going into whatever room this "boy" was hanging in.
Dads bull from 2013
My bull. Never put a tape on either one. Didn't care at the time and still don't.
Awesome thread!! I'm hoping to have a pic to add here in a few weeks. Zimbabwe-bound August 26.
Good luck DocRocket and I will be watching for the hunting report.
Yup,good luck DocRocket and have a great time.
