I'd like to make a collection of the classic reads about the hunters and tales of Africa from decades past.

I believe this group, after spending time lurking and reading posts, can help me complete the list for me to find.

The web helps, of course, but one's ability searching would also hinder things, I'd think.
Word of mouth.........still rules in my world.

A mention of the book or books you most enjoyed would be greatly appreciated.

God Bless for any help.

" Bell of Africa" by W.D.M. Bell

" White Hunters" by Brian Herne...this one will let you know who is who, interesting read and give you an idea on authors of other books...

" Horn of the Hunter" Robert Ruark
I have never hunted in Africa, but enjoy reading from those who have. I'll second White Hunters and add a relatively new book, perhaps not a "Classic": Augusts in Africa by Thomas McIntyre.
(1) African Game Trails, T Roosevelt
(2) Green Hills of Africa, E Hemingway

That's all the collection anyone needs, anything else is surplus.
"Reminiscences of an Elephant Hunter" by W.D.M. Bell

My current read and really enjoying it.

Mike
Boddington has a series of 4 books that cover his 40 years of African Hunting. Each book covers 10 years. Together they really give a person a slice of hunting across Africa.

In chronological order They are:

Mount Kenya to the Cape.
Where Lions Roar.
Tracks Across Africa.
From the Cape to Kasserine.

If interested in elephant hunting, he has: Elephant!
If interested in buffalo hunting, he has: Buffalo!

I have met Craig, and he is a real gentleman.

Terry Weiland has an excellent book: Dangerous Game Rifles II.

Just about anything by Capstick is a good read.

I've downloaded from Amazon some books by Bell and Selous. Guys who went into the wilds of Africa to hunt ivory as much as 150 years ago. That Selous was one tough dude. I believe was killed in WWI fighting the Germans in Taganika. He was nearly 70 at the time.
Anything Jim Corbett wrote is riveting reading, the hours the man spent in hides and trees awaiting man eaters is just incredible, and his ability to put these adventures into words will make it hard to put any 0f his books down.

Wow! Thanks to you all.

Many I've read but need to buy for my shelves but many more I have not yet read are listed above.

I may have to take a loan out on the house to buy them all! grin

An unbelievable list, already

Another I have enjoyed reading that some may not be aware of is "Hunter" by J.A. Hunter. IIRC it's a biography of his life and pretty amazing.
I was not aware till now that he wrote more than one but his is the one I have read.

Boddington! is the last person, I would have in my Book case! The man can't write without a "!" every paragraph!
Ditto on Safari Press. Anyone not perusing their endless collection of books is sorely missing out.

I have read the books about the professionals countless times but have enjoyed some obscure ones also.....Solo Safari by Terrence Cazek....Walt Prothero titles and The Golden Age of Safari by Brian Herne
A HUNTER'S WANDERINGS IN AFRICA---F.C.Selous
A HUNTER'S LIFE IN SOUTHERN AFRICA---R.Gordon Cumming
ELEPHANT HUNTING IN EAST EQUATORIAL AFRICA---Arthur Neumann
A GAME RANGER'S NOTEBOOK---A.Blaney Percival
THE WANDERINGS OF AN ELEPHANT HUNTER---W.D.M.Bell

Just a few of the writers of yesteryear.
"Pondoro" by John Taylor
#1 - Horn of the Hunter Robert Ruark
A Country Boy in Africa by George Hoffman.
Anything by Peter Capstick.

"A Man Called Lion," also by Capstick, about Taylor

Regarding Bell, I like "Karamojo Safari" best of all.

"Months of the Sun" by Ian Nyschens
Death in the Long Grass - Capstick
If its just to read check out "Project Gutenberg". Lots of old (expired copyright) in there. Hard telling what you will find in there. But there is a lot of good reading in there.

Months of the Sun is a great read. That was one hard core s.o.b!
