I was at a gunshop and they have a Steyr military style rifle. It has been rebarreled to 308 I would like to have it ,but I don't know anything about that make .. It looks like a mauser 98 .. who made them and are they any good.. it was a 8 mm originally.. I don't know who made the barrel but it looks very well done. has a scope , no iron sights.. they want $350.00 for it. I can probally get it for less.. maby $300.00.. I need a 308..

There was some Chiliean .308 military conversions imported that I think were M98 conversions.Lots of info on the interweb. For that kind of money there are better options IMO. Those $200 Savage Axis shoot pretty well.

I bought an Axis today, it was $ 198.00 plus 6% sales tax from Wally world. it took 1/2 hour to get an approval.. I thought it came with a scope. but dident.. I have some scopes anyway... It has sling studs and scope bases is as light as a feather, I think I am going to like it.I would of liked open sights but they would of probably been too cheap to be useful.. need to clean it up and go to the range tomorrow... thanks for the suggestion...

I have several Savage Axis rifles and they all shoot pretty accurately. They're hard to beat for the money. Good luck with yours.

How's it set up stockwise? $300 is not much for a good 98 if you like them.

I somehow ended up with a couple of the axis rifles that both shoot well, too good for $200 laugh . The stocks are not super great, but serviceable.

it had the original stock.. complete without the iron sights. if it had the iron sights I would of bought it.. they just replaced the barrel with a new one..I have some original sights but I don't think they would of fit the barrel.

I gotta imagine there's a lot of extra 308s around the Campfire. Might consider a WTB ad. Good luck.

Oh. Unknown barrel is not too exciting, but, you never know.
