The four inch specimen is a dash 2, and the six inch is a dash 3. Had them both out at the same time, so thought I'd take a picture.

Where's your 8 3/8 at?
Awesome. Have owned several like the top one and at least one identical to the bottom.

Happiness is a warm N frame. Hope you had them out to shoot. Very nice.

Exactly. That's why the Model 29 was Unobtainium till about 1990. Back in the early 1980s, like so many did, I eventually gave up trying to get a 29 and ordered a 57, which was readily available for under MSRP. Soon as I was able to get a couple of 29s in the 1990s, I sold my 57.

Hold the replies on how great the 57 is. I know it's a great gun and caliber.

HIckok45 has one of them. Won lots of long range steel matches with it, back in the day.

Were you aware that, in Dirty Harry, they'd use the 8 & 3/8ths inch 29 for certain shots, as opposed to the 6 & 1/2 inch model Callahan was typically seen with?
First handgun was a 6” Model 28 Highway Patrol. Had a lot of fun with that gun.

those cokes on the 6"?

I used to have a 28. The hottest Magnums felt like a .38 with target wadcutters.

Reproduction of the Coke Bottle N-Frame grips, made by Eagle Grips. Those are walnut. They also offer them in rosewood.

I sold mine to flave over a half dozen IPA's.

The is one was my first handgun bought when I was 17. It was an 8 3/8's but a bad barrel had S&W warranty the 5" replacement.

Nice! I had the 10 5/8 but passed it down to my son.

It was their Silhouette model with a 4 range adjustable front sight. Spooky accurate.
Those are sweet.
Smith and Wesson has came a long ways in 150 years

Good stuff.
Had 4, 6 and 8 3/8" 629's.
6" my fave for do all (range toy and hunting)
But just luggin around and shooting 50 yards or less, the 4".

Don't have one right now frown

Posted By: hookeye Re: A Brace of S&W Model 29s - 06/27/20
Pops had a 6.5" from back in the day, and a 10 5/8" he sold last yr.
Dumped his 8 3/8" 629 too.
Think he's out of N frames (at the moment).

What is the Outfitter Series?
N frames still a big favorite of mine, a 29-3 6" blued with Hogue grips and 2nd year production 1 st run 8 3/8" 629 pinned and recessed I have smooth Rosewood S&W target grips on it.
Posted By: deflave Re: A Brace of S&W Model 29s - 06/27/20
I believe the pinned and recessed 629’s in 8 3/8” are a pretty rare bird.

I don't know if there were any other in the "series" other than my gun. Maybe. IIRC my gun was a celebration of Cabela's first fifty years in business. It's basically just a model 629 Mountain Gun.

A friend of mine, now deceased, was a gun dealer over in Missouri back when I was a gun dealer too. He had one and was trying to trade me a 6" model. His was outfitted with the old diamond oversized grips...walnut instead of the then-standard Goncalo Alves. He had another set and wanted to outfit the six-incher with diamond grips too and trade it to me. The old diamond grips really made the 629 in either length, stand out. It made it "pop" as Safariman would say.

I believe you're referring to the Coke Bottle grips.
Yeah, this is the Coke Bottle grip.

This thread really makes me want to find a 8 3/8" for hunting.
I sold my 8 3/8” 29 in the presentation box. I sold every model 29 I ever had and I’ve had a lot of them through the years. Threads like this make me almost wish I’d held onto 1 or 2 but I can’t turn down ridiculously high offers so there’s little chance I’d still have them anyway.

Nice revolvers guys and another great thread TRH. 👍

I think the Coke Bottle grips are actually a little less hand-filling than the Goncalo Alves Target grips.
Very, very nice! Only N frame I have at the moment is a 4" 28-2 Highway Patrolman. Know it's not the same, but...

Those are cool. Like I said earlier, I had one for years. Only thing about the 28 is that it's way overbuilt for the caliber.

The older Oversized Target grips pictured, are actual walnut and have the diamond insert...called "coke bottle" grips as a nickname. They are smaller than the newer Goncalo Alves Oversized Target grips. That's what the guy was trying to sell me on.

Yeah, 2nd year production lost 2/3 of the frames due to warpage.
They only ended up with a couple thousand 4 and 8 3/8" guns each ,they were the last of the pinned and recessed m629's. Next year brought forth the 629-1 , that engineering change did away with the pinned barrel and recessed chambers. I like it but am honest enough to say I shot my old 29-2 6.5" better and will all ways regret trading it off. MB

The grips I have on my six inch are a replica of the Coke Bottle grips. Also walnut, but I didn't luck into a really nice, dark, grainy, pair.
