With a wave of crises crashing across the U.S., more than 40,000 Illinoisans applied for a gun permit in a little more than two weeks this month, more than 500 percent over last year, says the Illinois State Police. Gun sales are soaring at Mark Glavin’s shop in Elgin, from an average of 10 a day last year to as many as 200 a day this year. With so many gun purchases, he said, ammunition also can be hard to find. “Take a full glass of coronavirus, shake in a shot of riots and another of this defund police notion, and everything goes crazy,” Glavin, owner of Fox Valley Shooting Range, tells the Chicago Tribune. “Not to mention the backlog on background checks.”

The mandatory 72-hour background check — required by the state before getting a gun — has stretched to more than a week for some of his customers. From June 1 to June 17, there were more than 42,000 applications for FOID cards, compared with about 7,000 during the same time last year, a 501 percent increase. “We know that traditionally there’s an uptick in gun purchases around elections and major tragedies,” said Noam Ostrander, an associate professor of social work at DePaul University who has worked extensively with victims of gun violence and police brutality in Chicago. “There’s two big predictors of gun ownership … perceived risk of victimization and then a belief that the world is a dangerous place …the world does look like a dangerous place right now.”
Dan Eldridge, owner of Maxon Shooter’s Supplies and Range in Des Plaines, said nearly half the customers clamoring for appointments these days appear to be first-time buyers. He said a survey by the National Shooting Sports Foundation found that 40 percent of buyers were first-time purchasers and 40 percent of those were women.
Anyone who doesn't have a gun for protection and learn how to use it in these times is very foolish.

Most of whom will continue to reliably vote anti-gun.
Yeah and all these dumb fuqks will prolly vote for sleepy joe...
Double barrel shotgun sales are through the roof yo!
Hopefully, a big percentage of them aren't the man bun brigade.
This only increases the ranks of those who understand the value of firearms in the hands of regular folks, which should make anti-gun legislation less likely to get through.

Illinois is in violation of it's own statute on this. They are required by state law to issue or deny their unconstitutional FOID card within a given time limit, which they have never tried to achieve. IIRC the time limit is 90 days, and the state maintains that that means 90 business days.

Current issue/denial times are running around 9 months to well over a year. The FOID question is currently before the US Illinois Supreme Court, and many believe that the state knows it will be ruled unconstitutional, and are therefore not expending resources on the system.
According to some dealers who have an interest in the system, and facilitate applications for a fee, the issuance of FOIDs has completely halted in recent months.

It would be a large win to overturn the FOID law, but Illinois will block all firearms sales until they pass another equally offensive and unconstitutional law to replace it, if we win.
Good luck with going to the Supremes. New Jersey has something similar, a Firearms Identification Card (FID card). The State does a background/NICS check on you and issues the card if everything by is OK. Then, when you go to buy a rifle or shotgun (pistols require an individual pistol permit for each pistol) you have to undergo another NICS check at an FFL for like $60. Total bullchit!
Just Trump trying to steal Obama's crown for All Time Best Gun Saleman. He might do it yet. smile

Sadly, Remington is still going broke.
It would not surprise me if many of these women first time gun buyers are straw buyers for men who can’t pass a background check. And the antifa types are arming up too.
I was talking to a salesman at a popular gun store around here about this, and he also said a lot of women first time gun buyers come in and insist on buying AR-15s, despite the salesman's urgings to buy something simpler to operate, being first time gun owners. They tell him that they will learn how to operate them. But, come to think of it, that does sound like something a woman might do and say if she were buying a gun for a man who was prohibited from buying/owning one.

This. We shouldn't get complacent, many will never be on our side. "Do as I say, not as I do."

IndyCA35, I have some Conservative friends who are not gun people, and I keep telling them that. These are not people worried about a paycheck.

Yeah, I'm just about done with that.
Suicide rate is up in liberal States. That may explain it.

Wait til mid-November.
