About 11 yesterday morning I received a text message from my daughter that my son had been in an accident. He was at a branding and had roped a calf to drag to the fire. The calf circled towards the back of the horse and tangled him in the rope. Somewhere in the mess he came off the horse and was knocked unconscious. The calf was still tied to him and dallied to the horse. Others ran to help and cut the rope to free him. He was out for 8-10 minutes before he came to. They called the ambulance as he had some obvious severe injuries.

After he got to the hospital they found he had a fractured skull. He was flown life flight to Casper where he underwent emergency surgery to repair his skull. The neurosurgeon has to install a few titanium plates to piece it all back together.

He is recovering slowly now. He’s not paralyzed and has no brain damage but has a long road to recovery in front of him. He’s a trooper and has a positive attitude. This is one tough kid. And he’s my hero...

Goes to show how fast life changing events can happen. Don’t take anything for granted and cherish time with your kids...

He’s really doing as good as can be expected. The got him walking already and they’re still assessing his injuries. He has some memory issues but seems like that’s getting better with time. Hes still doped up with pain meds so it’s hard to say where he’s at for sure. Thank you all for the kind words and support. I know many of you have been through the same or worse. It’s something a parent never wants to go through that’s for sure...

Dayom. Scarey. PTL for complete recovery. PTL for the medical miracles Drs now do every day.

What is it now to become a neurosurgeon? Near genius IQ and 20 years of study to be able to save someone like this.

God bless ya'll.

That xray looks pretty bad.
Did he hit a rock or something?
Get stomped by the horse?
Not being morbid asking.
Looks like alot of impact force concentrated hard.

Young and tough.
Should recover well.

They don’t know for sure what he hit with his head. Could have been the saddle horn or a rock or the calf got him but he was luckily on a good horse. The horse stood there through it all and never moved. He was in a big cloud of dust and no one really saw what he hit. The piece that was broken was actually broken into 4 pieces. So he hit something very hard. Looking at the X-ray it looks like that’s the thinnest part of the skull.

He'll be chasin' the girls again in no time. Kids tend to get back up on their feet and move forward instead of sitting around and feeling sorry for themselves.

Prayers for the boy, glad he's OK.

Cinch,

Nobody here could've said it better. My Dad had similar injuries when I was a little boy. He had extreme Traumatic Brain Injury. He miraculously came back to life, then recovered from a confirmed vegetative state that we were told was permanent.... 2 weeks after it happened and walked back home from the hospital.
I've survived multiple nearly deadly TBIs and more slowly recovered. Nevertheless, the Lord was responsible for my healing. One of my ministries is to encourage and minister to others who have suffered brain injuries and to their families. I am available to help. Feel free to contact me by PM... private message if I can be of service to you and your family.
I'm praying for your son.

Cinch;
Good evening sir, thanks for sharing this family experience with us.

As a fellow father who cradled my daughter in my lap on a fast ride to the hospital with a head injury, I can say I didn't enjoy it much at all.

This spring was the first time in something like 27 years I wasn't at a branding as my rancher buddy sold off his herd, so that's an activity I've some familiarity with as well.

My goodness, that pony gets an extra treat for the rest of his days and maybe a big hug too... horses can surely go either way sometimes and this time it was a major blessing it stood.

Please know your son and your family will be in my prayers for a speedy recovery for him with no lasting issues.

Thank you all again for the support...

The COVID restrictions are extremely frustrating. He was life flighted to Casper with his mother and I drove down with my daughter. Upon arrival they would not allow me or my daughter into the hospital. They said I could go in if his mother came out but no more then one person in. My daughter could not go in at all because she is a minor. So I had to drive 2 hours back and drop her off with her grandparents then another 2 hours back to Casper. They pulled some strings and got me in finally but I did not get to see him before the surgery. Very frustrating and makes no sense to me. I feel they need to accommodate at least direct family in a situation like this.

Prayers from down here in NM! We’ve had some bad accidents down here to good young hands. I hate that it happens and I damn sure don’t have to say it but it goes with the life we live and love. Thank God it wasn’t worse. Life is delicate and precious and hopefully we will all remember that.

Posted By: Cinch Re: My son is my hero.... - 07/09/20
It was definitely a freak accident. Could have just as easily been me or anyone else. He did nothing wrong and neither did the horse. Just bad luck and bad timing. We are very fortunate it wasn’t worse and that the rest of the crew acted so quickly and got him help.

Sounds like he's a fighter, good for him!

Cinch

Hoping for a speedy recovery for your son! Can’t imagine how you must have felt especially having to leave the hospital to take your daughter back home. What a bunch of BS!!!
Glad he is doing well and I’m sure he will be much happier at home and recovering in no time. Definitely needs a new Ingram with some special etchings or engraving! Maybe even a new rifle!!!

That’s awesome. Kids have all those growth hormones, etc going for them so hopefully they’ll kick in for a good recovery. I think it’s tougher on the parents when one of their kids gets hurts. Feed him well...best wishes.

Dang man prayers for thanksgiving up that it wasn’t as bad as it coulda been and that he is tough, as well as for continued recovery you’re so right our most dear are not to be taken for granted.

My mother had an extraordinarily bad case and Lupus when I was growing up and she was more aware of this than most. No matter why or for what duration she’d hug and kiss us and tell us she loved us whenever we separated.

It’s a tradition I’ve maintained in my family even tho she has been gone since Pearl Harbor Day 2003 and you just reminded me again of my momma’s wisdom.

Man, can you imagine. Well guys, we're going to peel back his scalp, gently drill into the skull laying on his brain, lift it up, glue (or whatever) it in place, and drill through a titanium plate and anchor it in place.

Just another day at the office.

PTL

Thats a heck of a boy.

Cinch - glad he's home. Shout if any of the 'locals' here on '24 can do anything - I'm not that far away.

I'm also praying for a speedy recovery.
Posted By: Cinch Re: My son is my hero.... - 07/09/20
As a grown man I can't even begin to imagine what this kid has been through the last few days along with the rest of the recovery in the future... He's been extremely accepting and positive through the whole thing. He remembers being on the horse and roping the calf but not much after that, understandably. His memory seems to be coming back with time though he's still got quite a bit of drugs on board and will for a while.

The surgeon checked him this morning and everything on that end was better then expected. He was evaluated by the head nurse as well as several therapists and they all gave him the green light. He will be much more comfortable at home where he can relax. No needles in his arms or alarms constantly going off. Nurses checking him every 2 hours etc.

I'll update his progress as I know you're all concerned. Thank you all so much!

Thoughts and prayers. Get well cowboy.

Glad to hear that he is on his way to recovery Cinch.

Reminds me somewhat of a little boy we saw in the rodeo in Cody. He couldn't have been but about 10 years old or maybe younger. He was a little feller. The small bull he was riding dumped him and then stomped on him pretty good from what I could see. He lay there motionless
and I believe he problably got knocked out for a few seconds. The EMT's come out and its all quiet in the arena. His father came out to his side and this went on for a good 5 minutes or better. Finally the little feller is laying flat on his back and throws his thumb up in there air for the
"I'm good" signal. The place erupted in applause. He gets up and the first thing he goes for is his hat. His dad was trying to put his arm around his shoulder as they walked out of the arena and little man was having none of it.

First thing that came to my mind was these kids out here are tough. No Xbox or Playstation....just wrasslin' cows for sport.

That's a great story... They said once my son woke up he was fighting mad. He sat up and spit the dirt out of his mouth and blew the dirt out of his nose. Stood up and walked to the truck and got in. His shirt was rope burned completely off. They already had the ambulance coming as he was knocked out cold for several minutes. I know it was definitely not the way it should have happened, but a bunch of cowboys with no medical training whatsoever didn't know any better. I'm glad they were there to save him and get him out of the mess he was in. And at least one of them had the sense to call the ambulance. It all could have easily been much worse...

I worked as a paramedic for 14 years. I saw many, many severe head injuries, not many rodeo injuries we didn't have a rodeo in Baldwin Co. Georgia. Mostly car wrecks and baseball bat assault.
Good God! Your son has a bad skull fracture.

Damn. He is lucky even to be alive. Looks like he got some great medical care. What a tough kid.
Y'all hang in there looks like this is one Tough Cowboy.

By the way, I lived for a year in eastern Washington near the Idaho line. I went one time to a rodeo, hell I didn't even know that rodeos still existed.
The guy on the loudspeaker said they would pay $25 for any man who would ride the bareback bronco bull.
I was 6-3 and 205, I was in great shape from loading hay bales. I must say I was a pretty tough young man. 26 years old.
And all the guys were pushing me to get up and ride the bull.

I said "Hell no do you think I am crazy?" Damn that looked like some dangerous stuff. I have flown hang gliders, I have parachuted from a Cessna, I have volunteered for some dangerous stuff but I wouldn't touch that rodeo stuff with a ten foot pole.

I admire courage wherever I find it, because it is such a rare thing these days. I admire any of y'all who have the guts to ride the rodeo. Hats off to the rodeo Boys!!

Best wishes to your brave son I bet he will make a full recovery. Looks like some great medical care.

Dang it Cinch - wishing your son a speedy recovery. That was a tough lick for sure. Glad he got to go home so soon. I can tell you I've worked countless head of cattle and wildlife, including wild mature bull elk in hard antler, and the very worse I ever had my ass handed to me was by an Angus bull calf I had healed and the head rope slipped. I was off the horse headed to him when the head rope slipped. He came straight at me and 500 lbs knocked me through a steel gate. All I remember was seeing him go over me with my rope still on him. Something about those black cattle that makes them Devils when a rope goes on them.

Just noticed this thread.

All in all, a very fortunate young man. So proud he is recovering well.

I know its probably harder on the father than the son. Prayers for you all.

He had a very good night being home. He really wants to be able to lay flat but with the swelling and drainage they have him sitting up. Went 9 hours instead of 6 on his pain meds. Trying to keep the visitors etc to a minimum. I know he’s going to hate the downtime especially when he’s feeling better but he has many months of it ahead. Very thankful that things weren’t worse.

Glad your son is recovering. Prayers sent.

Might want to rethink his Colorado t-shirt. He's too tough for Colorado.

I'm sure he is wanting to get back at it, young men live in the present like we all did at his age. You know as well as I that a few months with pass like water thru your fingers, just seems like forever when waiting it out as a young man. What the medical field is capable of these days is nothing short of miraculous compared to a few years ago. Right now patience is his ally. God speed in his recovery and prayers to you and your family.

He’s doing far better then expected. And yes very hard to keep him down. He has a mild traumatic brain injury and skull fracture and he’s ready to get back after it. Will be a very long road for him. But he’s doing very well. Still a lot of swelling but looking better...

Cinch, looks like your boy took a hell of a lick, and I am happy to see he is recovery is going well,

Those of us that have spent a life time of rodeo, on horse back and afoot working live stock, know we are going to get hurt, just not when or how bad, as the saying goes be a COWBOY MEET NURSES, we have all been in or seen bad wrecks it's just part of the job, But always remember GOD LOVES COWBOY"S if he didn't we wouldn't be here.

GOD BLESS YOUR BOY AND YOUR FAMILY, you are in our prayers Rio7

Just saw this thread. Many prayers for your son, I'm glad he is healing up. I think my biggest fear in life is to have something happen to one of my kids. I'd gladly die a thousand deaths to prevent anything major happening to them.

Cinch,

prayers for your boy.
Cinch,
Just saw this thread. Thank God for the boy's healing and prayers for his quick recovery! Its a good thing they grow 'em tough in Wyoming!

Thank you all for the support and huge thank you to those who sent him care packages... Definitely takes his mind off things and keeps him busy. Along with all the physical injuries he will obviously have both emotional and mental issues to deal with. He has been playing hockey since he was 5 years old as a goalie. He will not be able to play this year. He may not be able to hunt this year. It’s tough keeping him positive with everything looking so down for him. But he knows he got very lucky and he’s grateful things didn’t turn out worse then they are...

Thank you all again for the kind words and support. He’s seeing some therapists on Wednesday and the Dr on the 23rd. Hopefully he will get the staples removed on that visit. That will
Make him happy for sure...
Posted By: 2legit2quit Re: My son is my hero.... - 07/15/20
Had to have a MRI on my head. When it came back there were signs of brain damage from long ago. Dr. seemed incredulous about it. He asked what happened, a bad car wreck ? Yes I replied, couple of those, played football when we were taught to use helmet as a weapon, some fights didn’t go the way I’d planned 🤷🏻‍♂️ and dismounted a few horses in a less than graceful way, iows I got throwed 🤷🏻‍♂️

I just figured everybody had similar experiences growing up 🤷🏻‍♂️

Evidently not. Prayers for your boy, damn he musta hit hard, poor lad

Hope he follows doctors rehab advice precisely.
Get well, young man.

Very glad to hear your boy is coming along!

I'd say that horse has earned a nice big carrot a day for the rest of his life!

As noted above, you need to make sure that he follows rehabilitation to the letter -- traumatic brain injury rehab is based on excellent research.

A real go-getter like him will likely try to brush it off with an "I'm OK now..." Don't let him take any shortcuts!

Quick update... After 4 weeks to the day he woke up with one leg bigger then the other. Got him in to see an Orthopedic dr right away. They did an MRI and X-ray and determined it was fluid and nothing more. However it still needed to be removed. So next day they had him in surgery and drained it all. Hopefully it won’t return...

Otherwise he is still having a few speech problems and minor balance issues. Nothing that’s not to be expected. School starting soon so will see how that goes. Trying to keep him slow moving is a struggle. But he’s doing extremely well for what he’s went through.
