Preppers should really consider stockpiling salt. Very valuable as a preservative and also very necessary for cattle. And it's cheap in 50# bags.

25 lbs is not nearly enough
I go thru about 2 pounds of salt every dove season, soaking the breasts in salt water. Maybe I better stock up before Sep 1st.

Make some hams outta of that fat girl you got in the cistern
I didn't know it was a prepper item.
From all the videos I've seen, I don't remember that being mentioned much.

I bought a few big bags of water softener and the magnesium chloride version to keep the grey water tank from freezing in the winter and to use for icy walk and driveway. I will start tanning hides with that too instead of wasting them in compost.

An old family friend talked about the "Dirty Thirties". he said the used stock salt on the kitchen table.

"Sea salt" before it was trendy.

I remember fishing in the creek on our ranch and cooking up the fat bluegills. Someone forgot the salt.

No worries. We just drove over to the salt lick and helped ourselves. smile

Cows didn't mind.

Salt is salt, just the finess of grind.

We must buy over a hundred pounds of salt a year.

Aside, the term salary comes from salt, hence, "Worth his salt."

I've had a 5 gallon bucket of it in my food storage for over 10 years. Its sealed in mylar with a big o2 absorber and then sealed in a bucket. If electricity goes play is to make biltong out of the steaks and roasts in the freezer.
