Looks like we will have missed the window for Fall colors in the Black Hills. We now understand why the available and desirable lodging was booked up until October 10.
We are now looking at options a little further south. I'm thinking there are good places in eastern Arizona, maybe New Mexico. Also considering trekking further from DFW to someplace like Colorado, Utah, maybe Wyoming. The wife wants to see something other than Aspen turning gold and I can't blame her for that. I'm looking for a locale and timeframe recommendations.
So...fire away, please.
TIA.
That time of year I see brown corn, and beans, and the Iowa hardwoods. Not ugly.
Good luck with you quest for the colorful fall trees!

Durango as earlier, once more.
Might want to take the train from Durango to Silverton, walk around, have lunch and catch the train back to Durango.
Michigan is nice in early October.
My backyard.
We have seen the Minnesota River valley in early fall north of Redwood Falls, that was pretty.

Yeah, we know about Michigan. We're trying to stay away from that part of the country because we would feel guilty for not going to see he family in Michigan City. It's just a bit complicated.
For leaves turning color, I'd head east instead....
The Smokey Mountains in the Fall, or up into VA, KY, over to NC...
The further north ya go the better and earlier the colors change...
the most gorgeous place to see in the fall in the USA is Vermont and Northern New York...with the quaint towns etc..
New Hampshire and Maine with a close second...Pennsylvania has a lot to see also...
but the prettiest of all, is Quebec....for a variety of reasons...
Yeah, I know this to be true John. We just want to avoid going that far. Maybe when I've retired we'll do just that, but it's kind of a no-go at this point.
I've got this think in me that wants to go west, not east, to boot.
She's intrigued with Wyoming. This could be very good.
Richard, yep.
Looking for some Ash pics.
Ash is such pretty wood I hate to see it burned.
Well, we've decided on the Swan Valley area in late September. We'll have a look at Jackson (I lost nuthin there but the wife wants to at least see it), and we'll just follow our nose and see where we goes a good part of the time.
I spent a few Fall seasons in southeast Idaho years ago, but I really didn't pay that much attention to the way the leaves look in September. At the very least, I'll get to see some once familiar territory and may happen upon some places I once roamed. What I remember about my last Fall there was we were out fishing the Blackfoot River one beautiful, pleasant, sunny Saturday---I think it was late September, but it was 25 years ago so it may have been early to mid October. A little later in the afternoon the skies started to gray, the air chilled, and the north wind blew in and summer was over just like that. In this part of the world I'm still using my above-ground pool that time of year to try and keep cool. It should be a nice change of pace. Who knows...if she loves the place we may kick around a move to that part of the world after her mom and dad are gone. I'd have to think about it though, and remember what it was like the winter of 95-96.
Maple Syrup, McIntosh Apples, Bagels and Fall Colors is the only thing worth a [bleep] in the NE.

Oh, really! And where do you live that's so much better? Just asking.
