I didn't want to step on Beaver10's thread regarding being worrisome while in Portland, Oregon so I'll post my inquiry and observation here.
Anyone remember the rock quarry at "Rocky Butte" - right near or in Portland, Oregon?
I distinctly remember as a child my parents driving me alongside the rock quarry called Rocky Butte there near or in Portland and they would slow to show myself and my two brothers the prisoners cracking boulders into gravel with sledgehammers in their striped prison (jail?) suits!
Appropriate warnings were given to us youngsters by our mom and dad about bad behavior resulting in swinging a sledgehammer all day!
It worked on me, I know.
Anyone else remember "Rocky Butte" and is it still there?
I am guessing, with the current political "leadership" of "portlandia" and Oregon state itself, that the use of prisoners for hard labor is no longer P/C (permitted)?
Times, they are a changin.

In the 1st years of the Florida Department of Corrections being in operation, they rented out prisoners for labor, with the renter being responsible for their care & custody. Until the bleeding hearts got that changed, FLDOC was entirely self sufficient, received no money from the state, and actually turned in a surplus to the state coffers every year.
HilhamHawk: Screwing up a self sustaining penal program for the sake of white guilt and P/C.
Sad.

I remember they had a jail up there but I don't remember ever seeing it.
I do know Rocky Butte, was the name of the county jail.
What you saw was most likely prisoners making the stones for building or replacing old face stone on the jail.

The jail was demolished at some point in the early 80’s IIRC.

😎
Beaver10: Thank you for that information/comeback.
The years in question, for my couple of exposures and warnings about bad behavior causing incarceration and hard labor, were approximately 1954 (I was 7) and 1956 (I was 9).
Thanks again.

I think Rocky Butte is one of a number Of volcanic cones in Portlandia. We went to
One of the in 2018. Great views of the big volcanoes to the northeast on a good day.
