I distinctly remember: “a bunch of long haired freaks, jumping around on a stage, screaming, making fools of themselves”

Maybe he ended up at an Insane Clown Posse or Korn show instead. 😃

one of the very few times that that slumlord dick head was correct about anything.

and yes, I knew most of the lads. An uncle was a drinking buddy, the boys were West Side Jax boys. I just never liked that dang long haired country boy shtick though. I knew the lead in .38 Special also. More West Side Jax lads.

I saw them a half dozen times, always a quality show.

Huge fan, but I do skip over Saturday night special when ever it comes on. Matter of fact I'm about to head to the barn and listen to a little "Skinner"

What does the Jax mean in West Side Jax Boys? Jax Beer? Nevermind I looked it up, short for Jacksonville right?
Posted By: slumlord Re: Any Lynyrd Skynyrd fans? - 08/09/20
Jacksonville

Thanks for posting haven't heard that song in a "coons age" which is not very long in Chicago.

Like an old friend of mine said about them 35 years ago. "Skynyrd has an army of guitar players"
Posted By: Sakoluvr Re: Any Lynyrd Skynyrd fans? - 08/09/20
Mannlicher, did you ever smoke weed with them?

Everything I read said Ronnie had a real temper when he was drunk and loved to get into a fist fight. I watched a documentary that a band member said he beat up someone who happened to be a bail bondsman that in turn hired someone to kill him. The dude he hired was a friend of Ronnie and told him. That didn't end well.
One of my favorite old Skynyrd tunes:

I saw them in 76 or 77 in Denver. I was 13 or 14 at the time. They played the old Mile High Stadium. Less than a year later the plane crash happened. The group preforming as Skynyrd today don't hold a candle to the original band. Matter of fact only one or two members of the band today were with them back in the day and neither of them were the top guys. Rossington and Collins aren't part of it and Ed King is dead. With Ronnie Van Zandt, Stevie Gains and Cassie Gains gone you lose a big part of what made them special and that is hard to duplicate.

Had a good arm on him too. Was considered an excellent baseball player in school.

He beat the hell out of Billy Powell a couple of good times for not being in time. 😃

His temper ran off Ed King too.

Ronnie thought highly of Stevie Gains. The 3 women added a new dimension. They were hand picked by Ronnie.
Posted By: mathman Re: Any Lynyrd Skynyrd fans? - 08/09/20
Doesn't everybody love a drunk with a temper?
Posted By: slumlord Re: Any Lynyrd Skynyrd fans? - 08/09/20
And I believe Cassie Gaines introduced her brother to Ronnie after Ed left

They were okay as a rock band and a couple of their tunes will always be what we call "iconic," but they were not incredible musicians. Props for a certain amount of originality, but the original Allman Brothers will always overshadow them.

If you want to kill a couple of hours, look at some of the Youtube videos about the band, the plane crash, and the aftermath. You'll probably conclude that Gary Rossington is a liar and a creep of great magnitude.

I ran into Johnny VanZant in a fast food place in Jax once back in about 1979. Seemed like a pretty down to earth regular guy.

Just attended our daughter in law’s father’s funeral. Only funeral I’ve ever been to that featured Skynyrd as the music.

Here is a vocal track of Ronnie doing simple man.... Don't have words

Sure enough am a Skynyrd fan. Wore out many a cassette tapes driving the dirt roads in western Missouri and eastern Kansas with Skynyrd cranked and a cooler of road sodies during my teen years

Correct. Ronnie Van Zandt was looking for a 3rd guitar player and Cassie told him about her brother. Ronnie invited him to sit in on a jam session and before the night was out he was a member of the band. Stevie Gaines was a hell of a guitar player. He wrote the song I Know a Little and it is him playing the lead into it. Very talented dude.

I hate Freebird, but love Skynyrd. I remember when the plane went down. My friend's sister came in the house and said 'Lynyrd Skynyrd is dead'

Stevie Ray Vaughan is the other one I miss greatly
I was just rocking some Skynyrd on 8 track, nothing like the quality sound of a 77 8 track laugh

You don't like Freebird!? You are fughed up! Go have a glass of milk. Geez.
As for the guitarists in that original band, Ed King and Steve Gaines were very good. Gary Rossington and Allen Collins were mighty good also. That song about Curtis Loew is blues supreme.

Skynyrd is one of my favorite bands. And while He wasn't the best guitar player in the band. I love Garys style and sound. Nobody else sounds like him and for me his play is the Skynyrd sound.
