Any recommendations for leather work gloves that will hold up? Not the thin Mechanix type, but nothing so thick and heavy that there's no dexterity.

I get mine from a welding supply house. About $6 /pair, leather. They holdup fairly well. Try using a farriers rasp with a leather glove and see how long they last. I wear out about two pair every summer, one in hunting season and one in the winter. I will have to check the catalog tomorrow that is down in the shop to get the name of the supplier

Agree on dispo gloves. The oil gives them a bit more flex and gription. Don’t like gloves slipping on a shovel or similar.

Golden Stag Work Gloves with reinforced palm, thumb, and trigger finger. They are 18.00 a pair at the Co-op but the fit great and generally last until i leave them on the bumper or something stupid.

I know it's not what you asked but Milwaukee makes a great cut level 1 work glove and they have great dexterity. My boy bought them for me and I have since dropped the leather gloves

Once in a while a store will have them. Not often though.

Maybe I should have rubbed some of that Oberdork schidt or a Hershey bar on them, softened them up.

Last pair of goatskin gloves I bought, USA made, were very expensive. Nice to wear, so nice they usually get left in the "glove box" in the garage and the Costco ones get worn if there's any risk of the gloves getting fooged up.

Used to be you could trade your deer hides for deer gloves at some of the collection places around here. Sometimes, those were darned good gloves for work gloves and would last me a long time, depending on where you got them... wish I could still work a deal on them again if they started up that program again....

I use the Costco gloves, they get comfy if you use them a bit.

I have owned so many leather gloves it ain't funny. From stripping forms on a concrete job to firewood, to hunting camp to chores around the farm. Recently, I would go through two pair of gloves a month cleaning machinery at a tool and die factory. I buy the cheapest , best fit I can get and call it good. None of em last that long when one is gittin er done!

This is one of the reasons I've gone over pretty much to the Kevlar gloves they handed out at work for safety reasons. Although I love the feel of leather gloves when I'm working, I've found the synthetic gloves we got at work lasted longer, fit better and were more comfortable. Since they fit more snug on my hands I could do relatively fine work with them if I needed to and they are cut resistant, which I've proved a couple times at work by running a drill bit into them while running and it just wound up on the bit instead of penetrating and leaving a blood trail....
I've got a whole bag of them left over from the end of a job they were just going to toss in the trash, so I brought them home and use them for everything...

They did the same thing with gloves for men, just in reverse. I used to wear a large or x large.

Same thing with the Raven black nitrile gloves from Napa....that are no longer available anyway.

Elk skin are my glove of choice. Yellowstone is the brand if I remember correctly. They make handling thorn trees and barbed wire much less less pleasant.

Yellowstone Gloves out of Idaho Falls, ID, my all time favorite work and hunting gloves. They are pricey, but last two to three times longer than cowhide. Bought a dozen pair two years ago and down to my last three pair.

I used to could fit in a medium of certain brands, the Costco ones at one time. They were tight on the palm area but fit my short fingers. Then, I think when they started making them in......................CHINA............I had to start getting a large to fit the palm of my hand and the fingers have too much overhang now.

In my experience pigskin gets very slimy when wet and rots from salt sweat.

For dexterity I buy deerskin. Goat hide gloves also look very appealing, and feel very soft. But I have never done more than tried them on at the store, then bought the deer hide.

Horse hide is pretty tough, and sweat resistant. That is what we have used for bucking hay bales for 60 years.

But I often use and actually prefer elkhide for all but the most delicate tasks, which are usually done bare handed anyway. I have a pair of elk hide gloves on the bench now beside the lead melting pot. Casting bullets or sinkers is the perfect application. Thick enough for insulation from the mold or spashes of molten lead. Durable to the extreme. And quite comfortable. I have had boots made of elkhide in the past. I think it is about the most durable leather available.

I can not name the brand. They are always on display at our local farmer Co-op, or at the suburban/hobby farm supply stores popping up with gentrification of the farm communities.
