In general, I don't like hearing high pitched female voices. For choral music, I HATE hearing women's voices. It's almost painful. I greatly prefer men's choirs.
If the lady is a really exceptional singer, though, I can fall in love.
As long as they don't wail or warble like so many no talent famous "singers " do these days, I have no preference.
The Star Spangled Banner is my benchmark for a singer. If they can make it through that correctly and not string out "free" into " free-eee-yee-yee-eee" and "brave " into " bur- ay- ee- vuh" and such well we'll probably get along ok
Stringing out single syllables into multiples shows a lack of genuine talent

Way back I saw Kate Bush on the Kenny Everett Video Show. Weird voice, but odd n cute..........yeah, crush.
I like Liv Kristine (Theatre of Tragedy)on some stuff, and Christina Scabia (Lacuna Coil) Amy Lee can sing better though. Like Chibi from The Birthday Massacre, but live vids have her sounding pretty bad (dunno if studio work enhanced a lot or not).
Male singers, I like lower end..............fave was Peter Steele. Am listening to Michelle Darkness (Michael Huber) at the moment. Not as good but all we have these days.
Liked Paul DiAnno with Maiden, Bruce is different and possibly an acquired taste.
I like the background chant type crap........crazy azzed foreigners (heavy accent, Greek)..........(various songs) Not a fan of the lead singers style though, but overall I dig this silly chit
Growling German goth stuff.............hate to admit it's catchy
rather listen to this than that fuggin country radio station stuff (my ol lady plays it in her Jeep).
I like all sorts of stuff, but no country or rap. No damn Aerosmith either.
Pot metal............Warrant, Ratt, Poison etc.............never. No Def Leppard either. Metallica sucked balls after the Black Album.
TBM (The Birthday Massacre- esp older albums), Type O Negative, Iron Maiden, Theatre of Tragedy (older)..........I usually fall back to. Spend a ton of time trying to find new good stuff. Work 2nds so nothing else to do at 2 am (like now). I like electronica, but not the hammering dance beat of most. What do they call it.............darkwave, synth, ambient..............lots of cool soundscapes..........but usually one hit wonders the bands are.
I can chill to this, a lot like the Cure. Robert Smith (the Cure) not anything great vocal wise, but like his unique sound. Think that may be a selling point with me, something unique, not necessarily perfection or wider range.
One of my favorites..........fake live album..............laugh my azz off
Man would’ve loved to seen these guys live!
Pete I guess was fugged up a lot and hurt the performances on many shows (so I've read). Youtube home vids of shows, do not tell how the audience heard it. Might have been great if there, but comes across as crap on somebody's camera, or maybe even the other way around.
Would have liked to have seen em on the October Rust tour. There was a bootleg "Autumn in Indianapolis" on YT, when some channel called "Tyep O TV" was on. Maybe Roadrunners got mad, had that channel killed. Lots of cool stuff was there.
That bootleg was from the Emerson, where the kid and I were gonna see TBM this fall. I was working a lot back when October Rust came out, so missed it.
Think if the sound right, that show and Maiden in '85 World Slavery Tour...........those 2 shows, and I could have died happy. Seen Maiden 7 times now, front row 99 at smaller venue when Bruce came back . Had tix for Type O, in Chicago, at the Metro............on Halloween and had two strippers fighting for my extra ticket (was divorced). Alas, Pete beat the chit out of some dude banging his ol lady and went to jail over it, month prior. Life is Killing me tour cancelled.
Was gonna go see em on the Dead Again tour......but closest was East St Louis and nobody wanted to go with me. Figured alone might not be smart at that venue.
No disrespect, but you all like some strange music
Ain't that the truth!!
About the only female singers I listen to are Patsy Cline and Allison Krause. Like was said above, can't stand that echo warble, syllable stretching, halfway yodeling crap, reminds me of a coyote howling.
The national anthem was mentioned. I was pleased to hear the rendition of the anthem by Lady Gaga. She is a very good singer with a very good voice which, for a lot of her career, she hid behind a bunch of pretentious crap. Allison Krause, Suzy Boggus, Etta James. All those old Motown chicks. I like women. I like to listen to male singers too but kind of prefer the women. Better to look at too. Taylor Swift is an exception. OK to look at, I guess, but her CDs are best used as reactive targets. GD
Thread seems to have devolved into genres of music instead of male/female voices.
To the original question, for individual singers I like a soothing female voice but also like male harmonies - Loreena McKennit needs a lot of gauze and soft focus for her pictures but I can listen to her for a good long while, same with Norah Jones. Old CSNY cd's are equally easy to listen to. Harsh, angry music of any kind isn't something enjoyable to hear but strong music is - think Death Metal vs. Beethoven's 9th symphony sung by a good choir. People who sing like they like singing are always good no matter the genre, the "in your face, look at how different and new and shocking I am" is old, old, old - some "new, shocking!" band or singer pops up like clockwork and then quickly fades into obscurity every few years and has been doing so as long as I can remember. Old guys still doing it is slightly sad and pathetic.
There are tons and tons of good singers and musicians out there both famous and unknown, youtube is your friend finding those. The Regrettes is an example of a very good little band, they seem to enjoy what they do. Look up Andrea Motis, she's a young (early 20's now) jazz singer from Spain who's very talented, there are several videos of her when she was just 12-14 and you can see the talent there already.
I'm still pissed Peter Steele is gone. I REALLY liked his voice. Nothing comes close. Been digging for a long time on web. Nope.
When Dickenson quit Maiden for a spell my guitar bud and I were chatting, the band had put in Blaze Bayley (who sucked). Told him................they should have gotten Dio.
His response?
"They would have been mighty".
Anyway, couple of my fave Type O songs, liked some of their more punk thrash but this stuff is slow and cool.
I like good singers who sing songs that tell a story.
I do not like singers, especially female, who hit you over the head all the time trying to prove what great pipes they have. Many black females sing like that, but so do many white church ladies. Carrie Underwood is a great singer, but she seems to choose songs, or chooses to sing songs, where she belts it out almost angrily. What's wrong with some subtlety? Sing a ballad once in a while.
I appreciate both male and female vocals, but the range and power of this guy's vocals sets him apart from damn near anybody else I can think of right now.
He is a classically-trained singer too. Ignore the "snakebite" face jewelry and listen for 30 seconds with you eyes closed -- that is how long it took to hook me!
Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton had some of the best duets I've ever listened to IMHO. Her voice was great on it's own, but paired with a male it was exceptional.
Carrie Underwood has a set of pipes, and should use them to scare bats out of chimneys as far as I'm concerned.
Best female standalone voice I think is Allison Moorer. Damn I love her voice.

John
That is truly a stirring vocal performance. He takes his voice all over the place in that one.
Ain't no "might" about it. Kinda in an Asian groove right now, but select white devils catch my eye as well. As my wife likes to say, "You can think about it!"

Man...Type O was one I came across after the fact, I remember the first time I heard October Rust, one of my top 5 albums of all time. Peter was a heck of song writer and lyricist. Wish I could have seen them.
