I'm smarter than the average national park bear by the side of the road hoping for some handouts.

Sales tax in the county I lived in is 8.25%. Property tax is hard to explain, cause there is currently a cap on the base rate of 1% of assessed value. Even a small house in the Bay Area is over a million bucks, and most cities add on supplemental taxes for things like landscaping and mosquito abatement, even though there is no landscaping or mosquito abatement work done, which brings the effective property tax rate to about 1.5% of assessed value, so you're looking at about $15000 a year in property taxes in the Bay Area. When we sold our house in Oakland, we also got hit with a 1.5% county transfer tax. That hurt, but it was worth it to get the heck out of Oakland.

We were very fortunate with money...I made decent money, my wife made a ton, and we were in the highest tax bracket. We got demonized for doing well.

Then add in the gas taxes, the other taxes on everything from utilities to garbage to phones, and the overall high cost of everything there, and you're talking a LOT of money for the privilege of living in what is now a 4th world chithole.

There will be a lot of people who claim that they are happy to pay the high taxes, and I am happy that they are getting what they want. I didn't want it so I moved.

Wouldn't surprise me if people from other states who went to California to fight fires were taxed and audited on their paycheck.

Remsen if’ I’m not mistaken California also has what is known as a ‘Source income tax’ which is imposed on your 401k/IRA accounts at a10% rate.

This tax affects those people moving into the state. I got this from an advisor who handles accounts of friends, one of which retired with approximately 2.5 million $ in his account. He was gonna move to California to be near his daughter and son who were MDs in the Bay Area. He made a offer on a home which was turned down and coincidentally his daughter and son both took jobs in Seattle so he and his wife bought there and still remain there.

The advisor told him that by the luck of the draw that he’d dodged a 250k$ tax bill.

I think that I got all of this right. It’s been since 1999.
