How many of you are going dove hunting soon?

I do miss hunting doves in Texas, a good time for sure, the joke was a C note a day to hunt them in the early 80's, whats a guy gotta pay today to get in a good shoot ?

There weren't many whitewings back then, and they were even protected, in some places we hunted! A good cooler was a must too ! smile
Hunting on my land and on the family farm in Ks, Sept 1 and 2.
My self, my son, my three brothers, and at least two nephews.
Noon on Sept 1 is a big shrimp boil, with appropriate beverage in moderation.
Been doing it many years.
Can’t wait.
If those are the same Mourning Doves we have in Iowa, there can't be much meat on one.

Don’t nothin’ get by ol’ wabigoon.

Last couple of years haven't been good for me but I'll be headed out again. It's a good reason to skip work.

That's why you need 15 of them to make a mess of dove meat!

I truly love to cook and eat fried dove breasts rolled in flour, pan fried in grease, gravy made from the drippin's, mashed taters, a good pot of beans, and cornbread!

Peach cobbler for desert!

Yummm!

I may have to go try my hand at dove hunting soon! I'm getting hungry!
I think that 's Slum and Rene laugh

I thought that too! smile
Been looking at fields that are leased or wma,s in montgomery or Robertson county.
Meh........

Just got off the phone with slumlord.
Gave him the G2 about another I looked at earlier today.

We might drive about hour and 15 mins away to look at one in the next day or 2 at one across the river from New Johnsonville.
Going for the first time this year. We don’t have a season here so hunting pard and I are going down to Indiana for their opener.

Really, really excited; I shot some as a kid and roasted them wrapped in bacon Twas DELICIOUS!
We’ll be out there sitting by a pond or in a fence line somewhere in the blazing heat. One of my favorite hunts and it kinda kicks off our hunting season for the fall.
uh no
Used to hang out with a friend of mine at his wife's grandparents house in the city limits. We would be on the patio and the doves would be in the trees and walking around in the driveway, there was at least 2 dozen or more at all times. They were as safe as could be
they dont open our dove season till around Labor day/ sept 1, and usually the first cool front of the fall shows up about then

so most of the doves pack up , leave, and head south........ you danged Texans get to shoot the doves we raised

Hard to beat right there Barry! I’m about ready to sample some more of your home made Peach Cobbler. 🤠
Any time Neil!

You're always welcome here!

Come see me... You ain't got no work to do, or anything! wink
Did not put in for any F&W drawings.
Might go the weekend after.

Might not

My job is hot n nasty. Really like to not get cooked on my days off
If its cooler might take a fam member up, do a picnic in field and hunt the last 3 hrs.

One of the things I look for is shade source thru out the day.

I got a shade shelter cover it with burlap, 2 can sit in it on comfortable fold up chairs and adjust it as the sun moves
Bout 4.5 ft tall
Half moon shaped.

Used it one year on post .
Saved myself and slumlord thruout the day.
Watched alot of people roast out in the sun.
Offered to let a 80 something yr old guy sit in my place.
Dude was red as a beet after an hour or so.
His hard headed pride wouldnt allow him.
He left the feild about an hour later in mid afternoon.
I offered.......
Big difference in being hard, and being hard and stupid.
JMO....

That same day I gave a guy a old tarp I had in my ruck.
So he could make shade for his lab.
Who was needing shade bad.
The guy accepted my offer.
Told him to keep the tarp at the end of the day for future use.
Dog retrieved 4 or 5 birds for me and slumlord in some really knarly
Creek brush on the border of the feild.

Good dog.....
Bud shaded his dog when we went. Fave field has a gap. No shade.
Limit out there, for decades.

But im older and weaker now....maybe a touch of lazy.

I cant do bug sprays and allergies worse.
Hunting for birds dropped behind in the thick.....those days done. Dog was nice last few yrs for that.

Dog too old to go now.

One field, 2nd best.......have to let a lot of em pass, or drop em in the jungle.

Bunch of camo fashion plate fuggers skybusting last time.
Some rubes too......dropped some at 60 yards. Steel my ass.

No DNR showed up.

Had some old timers crowd right on top day 1. They limited out, left. I limited out an hr after

But still pissed me off how they hogged an area like they did, when we were there first.

Kinda close to Chicago.....so ya get some real winners.
But man, it used to be darn good dove hunting there.
Haha

Remember one red haired guy, aka lobster boy by 4:30 on post

Then that year in Guthrie, that old man that stood in that in that standing corn for several hours baking his ass off. Think it was close to 100 degrees that weekend, never seen him fire a shot for several hours

I did one at TVA before there was a renegade50 in my life, it was 102 that afternoon. No shade on that. That was in that meteorite crater.
We learned after picking our fields ( pick order by drawing ).....to make a mad dash to the field, put a chair where we wanted to be, then go back to town to eat.

Opening 2 days shooting is noon to 6.
And hardly any birds first 2 hrs.

Subway sammich and a big cold pop.....sitting in the AC.....lookin at all the hotties coming and going at the truck stop.

Not.

Da Region.....lots of poles. Big n pasty gals.
More like a stockyard.
On some Harley route i guess.
Some actually hot ones pop up now and then.
Some old saddle leather ones too.

But usually biguns. Local.

Hey hookeye.
You repeated this post like 5 times man.

I will hit a feild on opening day at 8 830 ish to do a land grab for prime shade .
Based on a prior recon.

Then you always got the knuckleheads arriving 2 hours after shooting time
Walking across the middle of a field fugging everyone up.
Cause they seen a "Prime treeline" from the parking area.

Wah wah wah . ..

Im already their
Slumlord shows uo about 1030 1100 ish
Got his chair 35 50 yards away.
Already did meet and greet with other hunters within 100 yds each side of me that arrive early 9 to 930 ish.
All agree 50 yds apart is GTG.
Talk about areas in front of us safe to shoot at low birds with terrian in backstop.
Just normal stuff.

Then the fugg tards arrive and discover 6 or 7 guys along 200 250 yds all on the same sheet of music about spacing and safety schit.

They get all upset and do ignorant schitt like go out in front of 6 or 7 guys 75 80 yds on a terrian crest in feilds of fire and others on opposite side.

While fughing guys on both sides are yelling at dickhead to get out of their .
And useless wardens see it all and dont say a word.

Slumlord had pics from last year of a dipschit that did this for 45 mins.

Some people are really fughing ignorant on purpose....

Here it is from the other thread.

Fugging ignorant azzhole fugging up everyones hunting.
You can see the terrian we was able to shoot into on low birds safely.

One of these days Buddy! 🤠
I'm hunting a sunflower field on Tuesday Sept. 1 . There will be 40 hunters with wife/girlfriend and kids for lunch with an organized bird hunt beginning at 2:30 .

Already have 4 cases of 7.5 , will probably only shoot 2 boxes .

Same field we have hunted for 10 years usually kill 300 to 500 birds on opening day in this field . Only had one year with no birds. This weather that 's blowing in may ruin it this year but as of now the field is full of dove. Always have a visit from the good guys from TWRA .

I alway dread the heat . Staying hydrated is a must . The only shade is a tree line in one end of the field and the birds come in flying a little high . Some of the best shooting is dead in the middle of the field in the direct sun . I have a camo chair with canopy and a hay bale already marking my spot . I'm planning to throw a couple of Mojo doves decoys out limit pretty quick and give my spot to somebody else . Then I will sit in the shade with cold beverage .

I expect everyone to be done shooting by 1800 hours . Then meet up at the barn to clean birds and enjoy cold beverages.

Aint never been on a private land hunt.
Would be cool to see etiquette going on.

Only places I dont experience fugged up schit going on is on Ft campbell feilds or cut corn feilds in small game areas on post during dove seasons

Twra leased public fields and too some extent WMA,s are like Caligula,s freak show....

At least 1/2 of the people on twra public leased feilds are just plain ignorant slob hunters.

The wma,s maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 are jackwagons.

The month has a R in it and the start of fall hunting......
“ Dars less an less hunners ebbery yeer frown. “

Where is this happening? 😐
Around 20 guys from my Predator Calling Club and I will be hunting crop fields with irrigation canals down by the Saltan Sea Cochella valley Imperial County CA on the first.
Only thing I left out is everybody needs to write a check if you want to be invited back next year .
This is the first time in 3 years that I've seen mourning dove in our area - but only a few.
Up until 3 years ago, we usually had good populations - beginning in early summer.
We got a cold snap that drove the dove out, and they have JUST started to return.
Looking at maybe going down to Roswell for a hunt. (I hope)
I hope you all have some luck!!
Heading out Monday morning to my "beer lease"

Season starts here Tuesday morning.

Maybe this year..........

GWB
Good luck G.W.!
Usually we only hunt from 3 to 5 and then let the dove eat in peace till they go to roost. Never hunted public land for dove myself but did get shot up by a 14 year old kid a couple of years ago. I bleed real easy and when I walked over to the young man he started crying and begging me to go to the hospital. He's turned out to be a safe hunter and I let him come out and shoot a few deer every year.

If we don't have hunters here, I stand on the patio of my man cave and shoot doves coming in to the water behind the house, my dog picks them up and I clean them and have then in the frig. in no time, we make dove breast jalapeno poppers wrapped in bacon, they go great with a ice cold drink.

I done told ya'll, I will fuqk up a powerline. Took this pic a couple days ago at my farm.
This will be my son's first year to carry a shotgun on a dove hunt, I think I'm more excited about opening day than he is.
