I've been hunting the little bastids all year long. I hate them. They are destructive around the farm, as they will chew up electrical wires and also rubber lines on equipment. They've been in my garden all summer and I've been after them relentlessly. My morning routine is to take a 410 and walk up to the woods and back, along with my dog, an Aussie who loves squirrel hunting. I usually kill one at least every other day.

Both my dogs are squirrel hunting little turds. They love it when they tree one, and I shoot them out of the tree.

Barry, I started taking Millie with me when she was just a few months old when I'd go squirrel hunting. She really picked up on what we were doing, and usually spots them before I do.

That's good to have a smart dog like that.

Mine will follow the tree rats from tree to tree until I can catch up.

Now if I could just teach them not to fight over dove.

Both retrieve rather well, but they make it a contest, and I get pissed when they start arguing over a bird, and chew it up...

Chicken fry the young after quartering or drop them on the grill after skinning.

Mom would also lightly brown them a bit on the stove top skillet with a bit of cooking oil, with no flour, and then put them in a shallow corning ware dish with clear glass type lid with 1/4 inch water in a 300-350 degree oven.

When tender, take them out, tap the big leg bone on your plate and the golden brown meat falls off the bone.

Its the best mammal meat on earth. I can remember several specific times she did this way back to before i was in the 3rd grade, Barry.

You can also do this with venison steaks.

The older and tougher can be quartered and browned in flour and put in a pressure cooker with a bit of water 15 min.

Delicious, and great gravey is made from the juice.

I had a dog years ago that loved to go squirrel hunting with me. She didn't tree them but she'd sit quetly and patiently next to me looking up into the tree tops. When I'd shoot a squirrel she'd go find it, bring it back to me and sit back down next to me waiting for the next one.

I'm not much of a culinary expert so I usually google around for different squirrel recipes and try easy stuff. Season begins Sep. 1st for me and I haven't even popped one the last few years when I didn't get out much. Gonna change that this fall because my CZ-455 22lr hasn't harvested one yet. Only had it out a couple times and no shooting opportunities yet. Gotta get the obligatory rifle with dead squirrel picture. Last one I got was with the Benjamin Trail (Crosman) .22 cal. air rifle at just under 25 yds.. Did that just for the added challenge of getting closer, and it's legal for small game in N.Y. state.

They have quite the following. I've not handled one, but sure they're quicker handling than the 24" 39a's.

Barry, I’ll bring down one of my flintlocks that just dying to bust a mess of squirrels. I do likes me some dumplins!!!

I've been looking high and low for a Remington Number 6 Boy Scout, But I could get behind the idea of a Marlin 39a if it produced dumplins.

Interesting. Around here, mostly reds. The reds have pushed out the grays.
