I watched that too.

3 Flyovers and electric fence is more than WV would ever do. Regardless of the good rangers dnr etel; Like most things if he wants gt to protect him, he'll have to doit himself. They will restrict his hunting and collect$ and steal his family's house and property if he doesn't pay their tax (protection money) on time.

My mind goes to what if he set out bait and a camera?
Perhaps a motion sensor to alert him.
I'm not the bear hunter, so I'm asking you if you think that this would work, or maybe a grizzly s range is too large to smell bait?

Ben Lilly

"I never met any other man so indifferent to fatigue and hardship. The morning he joined us in camp, he had come on foot through the thick woods, followed by his two dogs, and had neither eaten nor drunk for twenty-four hours; for he did not like to drink the swamp water. It had rained hard throughout the night and he had no shelter, no rubber coat, nothing but the clothes he was wearing and the ground was too wet for him to lie on, so he perched in a crooked tree in the beating rain, much as if he had been a wild turkey." Posted By: Dave_Skinner Re: Why I choot bears - 09/01/20
Easier to shoot a human in self defense and walk than to kill a bear. Humans aren't federally protected.

I expect some fatalities this fall. Not the usual hikers or hunters, either, but in town, either a kid or little old lady out on her morning walk. There's THAT many grizzlies now, the habitat is packed to the gills and the Greens don't want the states to have the authority to be rational again.

The old saying here is true. You don’t need to run faster than the bear, just faster than the other folks you’re with.

I'm looking at it on a HP laptop and there is not a video in the link but I watched the one that you embedded later. It doesn't appear that the bear was the least bit interested in the hikers. Maybe because of the people yelling?

The bear in the hotel was just plain funny.
I was expecting that video to go with the headline above it.

Looks like one more example that the blackies have more tendency for human consumption than grizzlies.
It's a shame the hikers didn't come across the middle aged man inviting the hikers to sit down and share some bear steaks over the Campfire.

Interesting that ass director can pop up with a 99% number on bears immediately leaving the area after a human interaction... so how come so many are shot on the remains?

A pair of Idaho bowhunters survived a griz attack Friday. They credit bear spray for their success in running it off.

ISLAND PARK — An Idaho hunter survived an attack by what he described to officials as a grizzly bear, according to a news release from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

The man, who has not been publicly identified, was archery hunting with another hunter south of Mount Two Top near Island Park in Eastern Idaho on Friday morning. The hunters stumbled upon the bear in thick brush, and it charged at one hunter, knocking him to the ground. The man was able to deploy bear spray, a mace-like deterrent, before the attack. His hunting companion then deployed his own bear spray, and the animal fled.

Fish and Game said the victim was taken by ambulance to a Rexburg hospital after both hunters hiked out of the backcountry. Officials credited the bear spray for saving the hunters’ lives.

In a similar event the previous week, a grizzly bear attacked two archery hunters near Sandpoint when they crossed paths with her and her cubs. Those hunters also used bear spray and escaped the attack with minimal injuries.

This is the third reported grizzly attack in Idaho this year. In May, a Montana man hiking in the Henrys Lake area — near Mount Two Top — was attacked and bitten by a female grizzly bear. He survived the attack.

According to a biologist I know, "bears are perfectly safe as long as you keep them at least a quarter inch away from your skin"

Who can argue with that? smile

I do quesion the intelligence of people carrying pointy sticks as a weapon in bear country. I do not consider "bear spray" as anything more than a feel-good hope...... The human voice and an aggressive human attitude (as well as a few brains) is probably more effective.

Stumbling into a bear in tight cover can lead to a bad situation quickly. Probably too quickly for anything to be deployed. But such encounters are usually as much of a surprise to the bears. I have been in a large number of situations where a condiment spritz could convince some folks it actually worked. But I am not a believer because nothing happened without the spray... and because of the times when it was used and failed.
Posted By: Happy_Camper Re: Why I choot bears - 09/23/20

Someone should do a study on skunk spray.
You've seen those videos of beat verses woverine...

If there's enough data on bear verses skunk, and the skunks consistently chased them off.....
Wouldn't it make more sense to design a skunk spray?

That's a good question. That's come up many times in my line of work. Until recently, nobody wanted to risk testing that theory on anything but wasps. I've taught for decades why I do not recommend wasp spray for self defense against humans. There's better options. I've never considered it for dangerous wildlife. (BTW, my earlier comment about the James Bond snake spray and Bic lighter was a joke the video reminded me of. I think someone might have taken me seriously...not you. I wasn't clear, for anyone else who is wondering.)

Instead of teaching that again, there's a volunteer who put it to the test.

Reminds me of one of those at a mall way back when.
The bear beat every big guy that got in the ring with him. It was a big blackie.

Then a skinny little janitor watching the match set down his broom and got into the ring.
I thought, Oh no.. don't do it!!!
Surprisingly, the little guy was quicker than an NBA player. He ducked and faked, until eventually the event referee put that scrawny janitors paw in the air as the winner. Talk about an underdog. Better than all of the pro fights I've long since forgotten.

Who can argue with that? smile

I do quesion the intelligence of people carrying pointy sticks as a weapon in bear country. I do not consider "bear spray" as anything more than a feel-good hope...... The human voice and an aggressive human attitude (as well as a few brains) is probably more effective.

Thanks for that bit of wisdom, las.

A study done at a fish hatchery in SE showed tazers to be 100% effective and the bears got the hell out of the way of the guy carrying them!

All right. Thanks for that.

Its quite telling that some African apes are evidently not phazed from getting tazed.

He's a good bear, but he's still a bear. This is our cabin's kitchen window.

I think we saw him about a river mile or bit more downriver- maybe 1/2-3/4 mile as the raven flies. Bruiser of a blackie was just laying there on the river bank, forepaws crossed, in the sun, turning his head to watch as we went by.

Lucky bear. Jag would have chooted it. 😉
