Nice work, Doc.

You anywhere near Alpine?
Posted By: jaguartx Re: It’s not dove hunting - 09/06/20
Yeah, just north-eastof there about 125 -150 miles. 25 miles west of Kermit. You want to go tomorrow?

May be some rain moving in.

Hop, skip and jump. Maybe 100 miles.

No Doc, I was asking because it’s an area of Texas I’m familiar with. We built a few buildings for a guy that had a ranch in the mountains north of Alpine. That was some 15 years ago. Beautiful area around there.

But thanks for the invite.

Good shooting RC. I haven’t seen a dove close enough to fire a shot at. No birds here this year.

When does the season close in your unit?
Posted By: Hudge Re: It’s not dove hunting - 09/06/20
I’ve got the any bull archery tag for JBER. Only issue, I’ve only seen cows. Going back out tomorrow, but that’s it until the end of Sept. Good thing I have until 15 Nov for this hunt.

Whoop! Almost Fall!

What flavor of A5 you shooting there, Doc?
Posted By: jaguartx Re: It’s not dove hunting - 09/06/20
Japanese Ltwt 20, 26 IC. I hated to use it years ago when i was younger. It made me feel sorry for the poor doves. They do better against it nowdays.

Still, sometimes when they are real thick and i want to shoot more, i use a 20ga Benelli in Modified which shoots a little bit high and left of point of aim. It can make you miss a whole covey of blues running on the ground if i dont aim under and a little to the right, but its light weight makes it easier to chase them down in the sandhills. Its also real quick to get on a bird that gets up after you have passed by before it flushes on a cold windy day.

I like the Remington and Rio shells with 1oz 71/2 best for whitewingd but Estate 71/2 are fine for mourning dove. Tuesday i was on and got 14 with a box of Estates. Yesterday i went into a second box but had to help my old hunting buddy out.

I use Rem and Rio dove loads with 1 oz of 6s for Blue Quail and grey Squirrels in early season with a lot of leaves. They work great. Of course, a 22 for squirrels later in the season when leaves have fallen.

Supposedly this Colt Army I used to have was found near the entrance to an abandoned silver mine on a "mountain" near Alpine. It had no grips or loading lever when I got it. I managed to scrounge the original grips at some gunshow and put a loading lever on it I got from Dixie Gun Works.

Thanks for the kind words and thoughts Doc.

That is one slick Auto 5. It looks brand new but I'm guessing it's a Belgium one. You ever thought about potting a Javalina with it? You keep some buckshot in your vest just in case?

Somewhere in the hills west of Highway 90 near Valentine lies an unfired S&W Model 19. Fell outa my holster one afternoon back in about 1987.

I dont worry about that big boar boar getting into quail nests. 8 came in to water. I always carry a weapon for 2 or 4 legged coyotes in that country, but we better not go there.
