Took my 12 1/2 year old GSP out for a quick dove hunt tonight, really just to get her out in the field by herself for some quality time. She's been the best dog I've ever had and I cherish ever second with her, especially now that she's getting up there in years. She did a great job (even pointed a turkey shocked ) and was rewarded with some yummy grilled dove nuggets when we got home! If you have some pics of your good old dogs (in the field or on the couch), I'd love to see 'em!

My boy, Harley. Not your traditional bird dog - didn't point real well, but, man, he loved getting out in the fields with Dad. He passed away this January.

I sure have a soft spot in my heart for a good dog.

But a huge soft spot for good, old dogs.

Good looking dog Skeen.

Had to put my GSD down over Memorial day weekend.

I feel your pain.

Enjoy every moment you have with them.
Every one of them!!!
Man and Dogs evolved together.
Like no other 2 species ever have.
Put my dog Cookie to sleep yesterday morning.
Lost a part of me.
14 and a half yrs..
We had a tremendous run together during that time.
Like no other life shared I have had with any other dog in my life.
Cookie was the "One" dog for me that people who love dogs have or had in their life.
You all know what I mean.

Been just over 24 hrs since we got up yesterday morning for his last predawn sunrise.

I cant stop greiving and crying ...
And I'm probably one of the most hardened people anyone could meet.

Sorry to hijack your thread if it seems that way.
But looking at the pic of your old dog is killing me right now
And it feels good in ways to me to post about my old dog Cookie.

I will see him in the afterlife and we will be together again.
I firmly believe that .....

Cookies last predawn sunrise.
Looking east and heading north.
I have buried all my dogs in my life with their head facing the north star.
Something I do.....

He was buried laying east and head facing north yesterday.

He gave me a kiss after this picture.
Which was a tremendous boost to my soul.
Then gave me 3 kisses about 2 hours later on the floor at the Vet.
Before I lifted him up to the table.
My heart soared from that!!!
He was telling me he loved me and lets do this dad , I will see you on the other side.....

It's amazing how they come alive when you get em into the field....it takes the years right off. Then you have to go back home and they hit the couch and sleep so hard and you're reminded again of just how little time you have left together. cry

Sorry to hear about Cookie, Renegade50.

Reading your post was like what I could have written about my Daisy. Sheโ€™s been gone since 2012 and I still feel blessed I ever had a dog that good.

On the evening of the 4th
Cookie seen a Rabbit on a neighbors lawn
We got up to him about 15 ft away.

He got up to a slow jog for about 7 or 8 ft.
Alert head down predator stance and stride.
Did a brief point at it.
Followed its scent trail for about 10 yds.

I think God set up the event for him and me.

Cookie got alot of rabbits in his prime in his back yard.

The brief spark in him from that was something I will never forget.

I cant post anymore.
Its too fresh and anguishing to me.

Thank you for letting me relate in this thread.
It means alot to me.

Renegade, so sorry for your loss. frown

When I lost Buster, it hurt.

Best dog I ever had. We were brothers.

They are waiting for us.

I took my old lab, Jill, dove hunting the other night. She didn't have to do any retrieves as the younger dog took care of that. She just went for a short swim in the pond and sat beside me. When we got home she couldn't hardly get up to get out of the pickup. I plan on taking her pheasant hunting this fall, but she will have to stay in the pickup. I fear this is our last season together. She wasn't the best hunting dog I ever had, but I love her just as much as any of the others. All of my dogs have been special in their own way.

This pic was taken about 6 months ago. It was Ellie's 13th birthday. She loves seafood and I think mudbugs is her favorite.

Back in '07 Dad asked me if I would help him raise a lab. He had mutts his whole life and wanted a lab for his last dog. Our Dad passed almost 3 years ago now.

She's had a great run. We've chased trophy deer in the blackbelt, been rolled by the surf in the gulf, spent a week on a backwater river, and fought tuna 100 mi. offshore. But she really shined when retrieving anything for her Dad. She lived for that.

These days she is officially retired. She used to be very serious about guarding her yard. Now she has taken to a bunny that frequents her yard. They even play hide and seek every now and then!

Well damn
This thread both lifts me up, and knocks me down
No question, dogs are mans best friend!

Had to put my Reggie down about a year ago and I still mist up when I think of her. Best dog a man could hope for. Sweet, gentle, smart as a whip, and she would ride on the back of my quad while deer hunting hanging on like a spider monkey, never falling off.

Guys, condolences of the loss of your best friends in life..

Goes to prove, few things gives someone as much pleasure as the relationship they have with their dog.. I wish God had given them a longer life span...

I can't understand why this thread makes me feel happiness and fulfillment... not over the loss of your best friend, but the thought of each of you having experienced one of the best gifts God can give a man... besides his children...

Ain't anything much more noble that a dog you were able to spend Their Life Time with...

and if there is a heaven, I sure pray that the Good Lord made she that plenty of our dogs are there for eternity for us to spend it with...

Thanks for each of your gentlemen's posts here.. and the pics of your beloved dogs..

My son would love a GSD but we've never owned any type of guard dog. What kind of training/socialization do they require to be good with kids/family/neighbors but still effective at keeping strangers in check?
