gawdalmighty........

I had to relearn "borrowing" in regards to three digit subtraction this morning.

In order to teach it to a 3rd grader of course.

Frogsnacks. I cant believe all I have forgotten.

Can you still do long division?
Posted By: Jim_Conrad Re: Borrowing - 09/15/20
No kidding.

I haven't written out a math problem in over a decade I bet.

Full homeschooling or remote schooling Jim?

Are they teaching it there where they write the numbers to be added ke subtracted horizontally instead of vertically? Makes absolutely no sense but that's how they're trying to teach it here

Much depends on how precise I need for a given task.

My father was a carpenter. He could figure out layouts to the 1/16 of an inch or better. Did it all in his head.

Taking a road trip, I don't need to know to the exact penny or ounce how much fuel I used. Pulling a boat or trailer, I need to be more precise in planning mileage and stops.

Had a great 7th grade math teacher who was excellent at teaching practical math. Moving the decimal point when figuring 10% was an early lesson in tipping.

That kind of reminds me calculus. I had 3 semesters of it in college but never once were we told what it was used for. It's was all theory with no practical application. Some years later I considered going back to school and knew that I'd need to brush up on the calculus. A friend taught at the local college and he gave me a salesman's sample of a business calculus text book. It was all application, it assumed you already knew the theory. The lights came on. So THAT's what that stuff is for! The original classes would have been much easier if this was how it was taught instead of by a bunch of math PhD's who had never worked in the real world.

Just wait until they're in middle school, you'll be scratching your head trying to figure out if you ever learned the stuff in the first place, LOL.

Just wait until you get to Differential and Quadratic equations.

Oh my gosh. I have not seen one of those in fifty years. The folks had boxes of them they used to drill us kids with.

I can still see images from one of those. Two kids, a dog, a beach, and snakes made from sand, then the dog started tearing up the sand sculptures. 57 years since I opened that book.

Hoolleeeee crap. I guess I should have hung onto those old boxes. I just looked up this volume on Amazon.

985 BUCKS. Dad must have had 50 or 60 volumes of grade one, grade two, and possibly third grade reader texts.

jeeze Jim,

I thought you had to go to the payday lender so's you could get a tire fixed on the mower.

I still use, and balance, a checkbook without a calculator at times, so I'm still a bit practiced up on "borrowing" from the next number over.

It took the expertise of a future nuclear engineer to get me through math when I was growing up.

No simple "good at math" person would suffice.

Slum, now you know the difference between Indians, Native Americans, and "indigenous peoples."
