Was talking to a fellow at the range a couple of weeks ago, a retired engineer who hobnobs with some well known names in the gun writer circle, and he firmly believes that COVID-19 was just a trial run for something far worse.

....and of course this second virus could be initially released anywhere, giving China plausible deniability in the opening months.
