My last sunset in north Idaho. The cabin is folded and ready for winter. The Selkirk's distant with the smoke gone. Just hours back to the Texas Hill Country as I type with rather nice weather.

Surprisingly no. It was load.

Family vacation in the northern lower last week.

The turtle, I just took that picture, I did look at it's underside.

Jag- in this case, my wife heard at her dance club (a reliable source of information for wilderness living) that an open Clorox bottle will keep squirrels and voles out of the cabin. I told her not to believe everything she hears at dance..... she has also heard there that road flares are THE bear deterrent.....

We spent a day cleaning up (somewhat) the neighbor's cabin- they haven't been there in over 10 years. Gaylen died nearly a year ago, and his widow is thinking of selling it, so we got some pics for her after cleanup. The next day, after wiping things down with Clorox and leaving a bottle open in the cabin, the bed was covered with squirrel chewins again.

I trust my wife isn't going to try the bear thing....

Mainly, tho, besides disinfecting surfaces, a few drops in river water helps to keep from getting beaver fever. This trip we had timely rain for most of our drinking water caught off the roof, but we still used river water for washing dishes and bodies. If we use river water for drinking, we "boil the chit out of it". For washing, maybe not, but we do keep a big pan of Cloroxed water going on the back of the wood stove. If that boils, so much the better.

Love this stove. Weighs maybe 600 lbs, and is a bitch to get started without smoking everyone out of the cabin, literally.

The solution was a propane torch with quick-fire attachment. There are clean-out ports along the draft-route. Start the kindling, when the smoke starts coming out the top, stick the torch into the port more or less under the stack and fire it up.

Keep it going until the draft is established... Oven is great for baking, once the stove is up to heat- which takes an hour or more.



Underneath is a favorite place for the low-mass, hairless one. I think he is part cat.



I finished my roof this trip! I bought the place in '74....... . The bear didn't like the blow-in rain anyway.

Money, time, life..... When I bought it, the cabin was 4 short-walls, no floor, pole and sod roof on one side, pole and Visqueen on the other. After installing the floor, I had to add 2 rounds of logs to get head clearance inside.



IIf you are wondering about the short overlapping roofing sections, it is salvage from our rentor's house fire last fall - 2 days before we were due to go to the cabin (cancelled)...and those 6 foot and 8 1/2 foot sections fit nicely in the boat, way better tthan the 16s on the rest of the roof, especially since I now have a console midship. . The boat is 18'....

Tanana River Landing at Manley Hot Springs - about 35 miles above my river mouth - maybe 50 miles total to the cabin.



Ready! I'd already taken a heavier load of plywood and metal roofing to the mouth the night before. This is the money shot!

If I can get it on plane (could and did), I'm golden!

Rico died of a broken heart this morning basically.
Hiding Liver cancer and pancreatic problems while cookie was alive.
Took a 180 ° turn 2 days after Cookie died.
Went from a vibrant active fierce brave family dog weighing 60 pds down to 43.

He was hiding his condition the vet said for cookies sake.
Said she sees it alot.
My vet took the exam room pic.
I was just bringing him in to see what was wrong with him since Cookie died
Xrays and blood work
The vet was crying a little telling me.
She has been my vet for a long time.
Put Sweetheart to sleep
Put Cookie to sleep.
Knew Rico was sweethearts son.
Rico,s mom died 3 yrs ago of the same things.

You were my day 1 puppy Rico born and raised at home.
Day 1......

I will get your marker made up tommorow boy.
My heart hurts too much right now.

And me and you dog dad Blackjack are left by ourselves....

A serious go around here as well, but Cookie's batteries died mid-battle. Not a pleasant time to be around her.


The winner had the high ground in this instance with the battle ending in a stream literally at Cookie's feet.

We've seen this guy for the last 3 years and hope he shows up again this fall. Identification key is the small black spot on his left eyelid.

We had a bunch of tater eaters over for breakfast...

You've had a tough go of it for the past few weeks.
Dogs are a special gift.

I'm going to say this, as a person that has sat right there in Renegades shoes, holding a beloved dog as she beat her last heartbeat on this earth, and more than once. I say it IS fair. That wolves would befriend man so many years ago, and it has been that way, probably far longer then any two critters to get along. And we know, from a young age, that our dogs don't live as long as us. Some of us turn away, and go do other things, and don't have time or desire to have a dog around, I feel that is their loss, but that's just my opinion.
But for the rest of us, we still invite a dog (or two, or however many) into our lives, and we accept their love, we take care of them, we love them back, we hang out, and play, and just have a life, granted, for some, a small slice of life, but still, you give some to that dog, as he gives back 100 fold. And you enjoy each other's company. You are master and dog.
But he (or she), they get old much faster then we do, and the stuff that takes decades to snuff us, can kill them in months, and we do what we can, but at some point we ask the vet, or we just know, that we are fighting a losing battle. So we steel our selves to the fight, but the point where we must do that last... favor for them, that is all that is left.
When deciding what is fair, I ask myself; "Dude, would you spare yourself and your gal, who grieves just as hard, all this sorrow, but in return, forgo having had the joy of owning Champagne, Mox, Woodstock, Blaze, Freddie, Cody, Azhia, Mox II, Hope, Milo and Layla?
And the answer is always, always "No".
So I do believe it is hard, but it is fair. But it sure is hard...

So sorry it went down like that Rene. That's like getting kicked in the huevos after a suckerpunch to the gut...not fair at all. Keep your head up, you'll be okay, and ready for another pup before long. There's a reason we always go back for more.
