I too think Roberts is the reason no Second Ammendment cases have been considered by the Sulreme Court, but how will Thomas become Chief Justice?

If Trump wins and the Senate holds Republican they got 3 years or so to retire and be replaced with a younger conservative for the upcoming decades. If not they would be looking at possibly an 8 year stretch if the Dems win in 2024 which history shows theres a good chance of. So thats 12 years or better from now.

I don't know. With a 5-3 conservative/liberal split, Roberts may feel it's safe to go conservative. In his mind, no harm, no foul. For instance, if we had had a 5-3 conservative court when the Obama care case came up, Roberts might have sided with a 6-3 majority since it would not have been he who killed Obama care.
