I'm trying to find a cupped piston seal to repair a Shimano Deore hydraulic bike brake caliper. Shimano doesn't sell repair kits so that is not a source. I've tried to find it through local auto parts stores and no luck. Got in touch with Grainger. They were close but the size was off. Spoke with another supplier of such seals and they couldn't find one of the same dimension. I'm wondering if these particular seals were specifically made for Shimano and this application. Does anyone know of a company who might source these or comparable seals? I can buy a new caliper for 30ish but would rather repair these calipers since everything other than the seal is in good condition.
How much time do you really want to dedicate to save 30 bucks?
McMaster Carr got me close but the seal they had was a bit too large.
GiT. True. Just a few phone calls and stopping by parts houses while I'm out every day. I like to tinker and fix things. That's probably the biggest driver to find the seal.
I had a similar problem trying to find some rubber cups when rebuilding rear wheel cylinders on my somewhat old 3 ton GMC aerial truck. We were located rather remote and dealing with parts sources by phone and internet was frustrating (these cylinders are bigger in dia, that what they are used to) - was tempted to purchase four complete wheel cylinders at some mighty cost.
Waited until the next trip to Albuquerque, took the old components and went to the NAPA warehouse - the guy at the counter said "Nope, no kit and no cups". I asked him to let me go in the back area and look through his supply of wheel cylinder components. He was nice - took me back there - I zeroed in on the boxes of cups and find those I needed - bought 16 instead of the eight I needed - finished the job. Later sold all of the big trucks, including that one, and sent the spare cups with it.
If you can get to a larger scale bike parts place, you may be able to score in such a way. Hope it works.
