Reminds me of Biden's closing remarks at the last debate. Essentially, take a knee America and we'll stop killing you and burning your cities.

I few more to think about:
One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors....... Plato

We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light..........Plato

The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis...........Dante Alighieri
All of the above. Excellent post.

Sure does.

Funny how a Canadian can understand it better than a lot of folks in their own damn country.

Are you sure you didn't migrate to Canada from the US Miss Lynn? wink

Paul,

I do understand, and for more than one reason, and yes, American is in my blood, and I have family all over the USA, and I am so very proud to say it.

This is my great great great great grandfather who was a Minnesota Frontiersman.

Known as the "Kit Carson of the Northwest," he was an integral part of the history and development of Minnesota and North Dakota. He was an accomplished surveyor and his many settlement parties founded cities all over Minnesota and North Dakota. Those settlements would become cities such as Osseo, Minnesota and Maple Grove, Minnesota northwest of the Twin Cities, as well as Breckenridge, Minnesota and Wahpeton, North Dakota on either side of the Red River of the North. He also took part in the founding of Orono Village, Sherburne County, Minnesota (later absorbed by), Elk River, Minnesota and the booming city of St. Anthony (later absorbed by Minneapolis, Minnesota). He was also a renowned diplomat and translator, earning him the nickname "The Walking Peace Pipe." He played a part in forging many treaties with Native American tribes. According to his obituary he spoke French, English, Dakota, Ojibwe, Cree, Mandan, and Winnebago. Pierre was born in a hunting camp on the buffalo trail near Grand Forks. His father Charles Bottineau was a French-Canadian Protestant, and his mother Marguerite Macheyquayzaince Ahdicksongab "(Clear Sky Woman)" was half Dakota and half Ojibwe of the Lake of the Woods band, she was a sister of Pembina Ojibwe Chief Misko-Makwa or Red Bear. Although technically born in United States territory, control of the Upper Mississippi Valley fell to the British during the War of 1812. Even after the 1815 Treaty of Ghent returned the land to the United States, British and Canadian traders and the Native American tribes held all real control in the area. The U.S. government used Pierre and others like him to settle the land and help establish American sovereignty. Most mixed race, or Métis, lived as outcasts to both White and Native societies, but Pierre would soon use his many talents to become accepted as an American hero. His many invaluable services earned him celebrity status in his time. Upon his retirement, the United States Congress granted him a pension of $50 a month. He died in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota at the age of 78. Bottineau County, North Dakota, and its county seat Bottineau, North Dakota are named in his honor as well as the Pierre Bottineau branch library and Bottineau Park in Minneapolis and Bottineau Blvd in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

I had two great great great uncles (his sons) who served in the Civil War. One named Peter Bottineau was born in 1840 in the USA. He died on 14 Mar 1865 (aged 24–25) .

This is the only identification I have for him :

His Mother, my great (x5) Grandmother was Marguerite SON GABO KI CHE TA, of the AH dik do daun (Raindeer) Clan ofthe Red Lake Chippewas ( Sister of Chief Red Bear).(Corrected)

So, yes, migration did happen, but it was before lil' ole me was born.

My first 2 years of college were in Bottineau. Good people.

Always liked the town and country. Pretty good hunting, especially for waterfowl and deer in the Souris River country.
I will bow my knees to my Lord Jesus Christ and the Father. No other is allowed to have that honor do to God only.

It was named after him, Pierre Bottineau, and the County also, and countless buildings and places.

Bottineau was founded in 1883 as Oak Creek as a customs station and an overnight stagecoach stop. The town name was changed to Bottineau in 1884 in honor of Pierre Bottineau (c.1814–1895), a Métis pioneer, hunter, and trapper who became a successful land speculator.

The town was originally located about 1½ miles (2½ km) north of its current location. The entire town was moved south in 1887 to where the Great Northern Railway was installing new tracks.

There is a book called The Legend of Pierre Bottineau and the Red River Trail written by Ted Stone. His life was an incredible tale, one that weathered, challenged, and took the lives of many brave men. God Rest their souls, they made America great right from the beginning, a history, and a legacy, to be so very proud of then, now, and always.

I pray Americans will never go backwards, only forward, and take the deep history and honour of these men and women, and keep those that might threaten it or change it towards never ending destruction, out of places, and positions of power, so that the legacy of those that came before, and died as true Americans, would never be ashamed and feel sorrow for what America could become should further damage be done in the name of the USA.

God Bless You All.

Lynn

A great story I'm glad you posted it.

This country was founded and tamed by real men and true badasses. The wimps and snowflakes we have today will amount to nothing their entire lives,it really is depressing to watch so it's refreshing to see stories such as this.

Great thread. I happen to have been born and raised in Bottineau. I live in the Turtles Mountains five miles from town. I will likely die here. My roots are similar to yours. I live on 160 acres of which 80 were purchased by my grandfather in the late 1800s. He was Swede and Finn. Oofff day! Edk
Very powerful Miss Lynn, thanks for posting that. I hope you don't mind - I'm going to be sharing that one with several people I care about.

Quick story, hope it's not considered a hijack:
I have a few patriotic "bumper stickers" attached to the headache rack of my old Ford F-250, and I've posted a couple of pics of them here.
I get lots of reactions, and the vast majority are honking, waving, and big thumbs up. Once in a while though I get a middle finger salute.
So anywhoo - late Friday afternoon I'm sitting at a red light and a rice-burner type of car pulls up next to me in the left-hand turn lane, also waiting for the light to change.
It's a pleasant evening, I have my drivers' side window down, and I'm just minding my own business listening to Michael Berry on talk show radio.
I notice the rice-burners' passenger side window going down, but there's only the driver in the car. He's probably in his late teens, or real early twenties at most.
He leans over and says "I like your bumper stickers man! I really love this country too."
I tell you what, I damn near had tears in my eyes when that light turned green. I would love to talk to that young man some more. Never have I been so proud to be an American.
(Even though I'm embarrassed to death to be known as an Oregonian.)
It's good to know that generation is not completely indoctrinated, and appreciates what the flag, patriotism, and our country are all about.

Good idea, but a not so good choice of the picture. Yes, it is a Karabiner 98 kurz (K98k) obviously carried by a boxhead/Kraut.
