With the recent passing of JJW and Shaver, got me thinking.

Considering fame, impact on music, Being different and innovative, songwriting ability, who are the best:

My top ten:

Willie
Waylon
DAC
JJW
Hank JR
Billy Joe Shaver
Guy Clark
TownesVanZant
Bobby Bare
Kris K

I can’t believe the man in black is not on this list!.!
Kenny Chesney

I'd go with shaver. Only one I can think of that stood trial for shooting someone and had multiple witness say he asked the guy if he wanted it in the stomach or the head before shooting him

Based on these criteria I think Willie gets the nod. John R. Maybe a close second.
Add Charlie Daniels .

The Hag.

Convict turned country legend.
Posted By: mlschnei Re: Greatest Country Outlaw - 10/30/20
Well I guess I just double replied to David Allan Coe by far.

Willie and Waylon were great for Country Music, but the most
Innovative, different, crazy Outlaw artist country music has ever seen
is DAC.
Posted By: lvmiker Re: Greatest Country Outlaw - 10/30/20
LMFAO. Outlaws? When a bunch of drunk Texans line dance to crappy music played by an ex-con they think that they are outlaws! What about the originals? Jimmie Rogers, Doc Watson, Bill Monroe and, even Hank Sr.

World class musicians and songwriters, not stoned out drunks, addicts and cons. YMMVgrin

Hank Sr wasn’t a drunk?

I think Johnny Paycheck shot a guy and did a stretch in the pen over it. That’s pretty outlaw.
Waylon, the end.

Hank only drank when he was alone or with somebody.

There's a long list of country outlaws who did time, and a longer list of them that should have for the drugs and other crazy sheet they did.
If you want to talk about fame, talent and changing the landscape of music, nobody can touch Hank Sr. in my opinion. I much prefer his sons style, but I respect the old man for what he did.

No, really, Keith Urban.
He's got tattoos and everything.
I think he had a warrant for traffic tickets too.
That boy's a stone cold outlaw!

And don't forget dangerous Billy Ray Cyrus!
He gave us Miley.

My vote is for DAC as well. Saw him in one of those places back in 98 or 99 I think, in Athens, OH. Was a hell of a good time.
Does it get more American than DAC?

Ryan Upchurch. Can I get an Outlaw.

I’d go David Allen Coe
Kris Kristofferson wrote most of the music. Hasbeen

Most of who's music?

DAC wrote more than a fair bit himself.
Posted By: bhemry Re: Greatest Country Outlaw - 10/30/20
Don't know for sure, but pretty sure that Waylon was the one that led what became known as the "Outlaw movement". Not that there weren't outlaws before him.

On another note, I worked with the son of the guy (Larry Wise) that Johnny Paycheck shot. The son was NOT a fan of Johnny. Said his dad was sitting in a bar minding his own business when Johnny walked in and somebody said, "Hey Johnny, ever tried some of Larry's turtle soup?" Johnny reportedly said, "I ain't no damn redneck!" and shot Larry.

Willie is a sorry sack of schit.

DAC for the win.

I know he's a Texan, I'm just saying he tops the stated criteria: "fame, impact on music, Being different and innovative, songwriting ability"

And DAC isn't "an old white trash dope smoking POS."? throw in convicted felon and ex-con?

I saw a YouTube video of Shaver telling the story about that shooting. He said he shot the guy " Between the muther and fughker". I always assumed he meant he shot him in the mouth as the guy was being impolite. He said his wife or maybe ex-wife was involved in the disagreement.

Found the video, well worth the watch.

Other than writing some songs other people sang I never understood how or why Willie was popular. He can’t carry a tune in a bucket and his guitar “playing” is laughable.
Posted By: Lslite Re: Greatest Country Outlaw - 10/31/20
I like Willie, but he ain't no outlaw.Waylon was the man.
Coe hands down
One of my favorite DAC songs:
